Internet spaceships is not serious, nor should it be. This is.
What, mocking them for this is exactly what you should do.
Why are they playing video games when they're going through a rough spot? Why not just man up and go deal with their problems in the real world instead of trying to escape into a fictional one.
In fact, you acting like we should somehow pity those people actually makes you the bigger ******, its not my job to babysit, I don't come here to be a counselor.
Neither is it CCP's job, the "T" rating of the game hasn't been violated, as the actual fanfest isn't 'rated'.
Literally, you and your post and its expectations of other peoples morals makes you an idiot.

I'm not asking you to hold a pitty party, nor am I askilng CCP or anyone else to give the guy a counceling session. What I'm saying is that calling him out like that and encouraging harrassment is taking this whole cold hard universe too far. If this guy does pop himself and all this makes it to the media Eve is real is going to have a whole new meaning.
You also missed my point about the Teen rating. What I said was because of the rating their are teens playing the game. What if this guy was an introverted 13 year old and Mittens said what he said? Herp derp you don't care. When you have kids you'll figure it out. If you already do I hope you're a better father than you're coming off on this thread.

Vladimir Plinnikov wrote:[quote=Ladie Harlot]People threatening suicide over space pixels deserve to be mocked.[/quote
Actually it doesn't
Drunk, swearing, not taking a game seriously is fine. I see no issues with that, not my cup of tea but to each their own The issue I take with this was that the line between internet spaceships and real life has been crossed. It's one thing to be a jerk in the Eve Universe, it is cold and harsh after all. It's a completelt different thing to call for someones suicide on web TV watched by 1000s of viewers with the call for mass harrassment
CCP should have stepped up to the plate and nipped that one in the bud, but they didn't. Everyone needs to remember that this game is rated T currently, which means that several people on these boards and in game are under the age of 18. No problem with that, but CCP needs to keep an eye on laws like the Megan Meier Cyberbullying Prevention Act (H.R. 1966) less they find their U.S. players no longer have the ability to connect
Making fun of someones fitting is one thing. Mocking them because they are going through a tough period in life and then playing the Social Darwinism card is entirely another
Internet spaceships is not serious, nor should it be. This is.
This is kind of the point The line between this being a game, and being taken out of concept of a game.
Turn the tables around, and it would be no different if this was a "Goon" member going through a Real situation, and someone did it to them, I would say the same thing, disgusting. This is not a Bash Goon, or CFC, or anyone for that matter. This thread was not an attempt at starting bashing. It was to honestly capitalize on issues like this going on in game, and now clearly at fanfest. It is not good for CCP, it is not good for us the playerbase, it is not good for outsiders, and honestly way down the road it's not good for a gaming community / industry, period
This thread was a very simple, and straightforward statement. Disgusting. Period.
No public apology is needed, nor wanted, infact whether said individual had a few drinks or not is simply an excus They were still coherent enough to formulate thought, speech, and direct their slides / presentation. They wanted to say the things they said, thus they said them.
What was the goal behind this thread? To hopefully show CCP that a vast majority of their playerbase is disgusted by things said, not just one thing but many To hopefully show CCP the players do not appreciate when people directly / indirectly try to ruin this game for others, outside of the game itself, and or by using certain game mechanics to achieve this purposefully. To hopefully get CCP to stand up and defend & enforce issues for it's playerbase. Don't get me wrong CCP HAS been doing this more and more lately
What is the overall outcome Degrade in community, which many of us know what that has done to the gaming industry (20+years) in general, and thus no matter how awesome EVE becomes, if the community is degrading, so is the game, so are the players, so is the future
No one needs to sit around and hold hands, people can still tell people to get f---ed in game etc. Kill the s--- out of one another all the same, but keep it here in the game. The world is a crazy place, we don't need craziness spilling over into fanfests etc. How funny would it be if something said @ fanfest was dwelled on, and @ the next fanfest someone was injured/assaulted over it? It's not a threat, but it's a reality of the human world. Ignorance & Stupidity = Ignorance & Stupidity.
Sadly, many people do play this game with a sadistic mindset, and want nothing more than to harm the game/players/ccp With that in mind, it's CCP's responsibility to defend the players from such individuals
This is no different than dealing with botters, rmters, hackers, etc. |

And as society advances and the virtual aspects of our lives continue to blur with the RL aspects of life (if you don't see this already happening you aren't paying attention) your kids will eventually be hardwired to slowly be marginalized and fail!
We see potential employees already having to face explaining embarrassing Facebook posts and other online artifacts from social networking. You know there are going to be more cases like this:
Interviewer - "our company has a strong online culture, are you active in any online comminities?"
online game asshat - "Sure, I play Eve online, a have quiet a reputation there!"
Interviewer - "wow, I play Eve! what is your character name?"
online asshat - "I'm Snarfnoodle22!"
Interviewer (face suddenly seems to become much more serious) - "Snarf... yes you have quiet a reputation.. I know you very well in game - in fact so did my last two mining barges....."
Interviewer - "well, I think I have all I need to know, I'll get someone to walk you out..."
online asshat leaves, interviewer puts resume in shredder.......
I have had a number of conversations with folks that deny that acting like an asshat in game likely means if you had the restraints that real life enforces removed you'd be just as big an asshat in RL.
Seems like we saw a small demonstration of that at Fanfest!

How you raise your children is irrelevant to the central issue here. I'm sure you do a great job, and that's no sarcasm, raising kids can be difficult and we do our best.

Let's be honest, if you play Eve there's a fairly good chance your post-mortem will reveal a spinal column encrusted with crystallized alcohol and a liver the size of a baby hippo. Be drunk and disorderly, I say. The worst that can happen is you ruin your credibility as an alliance leader or CSM rep, but really what's the loss in that? Everyone not in your alliance already assumes you to be afflicted with mental midgetry at best, but more likely they view you as a literal space-******. The opinions of scrublords in the general player base is not your concern, dear leader. "For example, if you are thinking about selling a Republic Fleet Firetail as a regular Firetail, be sure that the market volume is high on regular Firetails and that there are plenty of buy/sell contracts for Republic Fleet Firetails. [...] The players most interested in Republic Fleet Firetails are going to be players flying regular ones."-á -- PB |

I don't care about the mental age of other EVE players or their private behavior, but in regard of OP I agree as the "public" stream is disgusting in some point and not a very good example of the professionalism of CCP.
Hey everybody should have a good time at the fanfest, and if they need to get drunk and behave like teenagers its their right, but that CCP support this and actually advertises public alcohol consume and stupidity makes me sad.

Reparing them and TV and ATM machiens etc. I work for my self. Also a little more about me. My wife likes that I can play this game. She misses these types of games. Over the past 5 years she has gone completly deaf and blind. So some times I need to drop everything to help her with something. I am also very mobel so I am online all the time. Even when driving. I'm actually not telling you to deal with it, your correct it's not your responsibility. I never said it was your responsibility to raise someone elses kid. Nor is it your, or anyone elses, responsibility to mock someone out of game. Not everyone has the support system you or I do.
Where exactly did I say it was someone elses fault? I said it wasn't anyones place to call for mass harrassment and encourage a suicide. I never said someone else should have ownership of the situation, should pay for councelling, or anything of the like. All I really pointed out was that with the mass amounts of humility and goodwill on these forums that CCP should take note of legislation pending in the House. Nor do I see my belief structure as overbearing. Don't pick on the weak... yeah that's draconian isn't it? Notice I'm talking about real life here. You seem to be mistaking internet spaceships for the real world.
I'm not sure why you're all up in a dander over this like I'm slandering your person or something, I've felt my posts have been rather polite. I'm not however lying down on this. I see it as out of line. |
