My girlfriend was just flicking through EON #12 and spotted something, on page 37 (the interview with David Arnar Runolfsson, GM Wyrm). If you look on his laptops screen there is something that you would take as a screensaver or something, but doesn't it look...well computer generated to anyone else?
Could this be the ledgendary planets we have been hearing about these past few years? I sure hope so.

Please no. Planetary interaction will be a huge improvement to this game if you make it necessary for things like claiming sovereignty, certain industrial functions, and who knows what else. This requires months or years of pre-planning and testing to make it worthwhile.
Introducing planetary flight as a side-game where players can fight each other in an atmosphere is so monumentally cheap and pointless, not to mention a waste of time and resources, that it would seriously degrade CCP's reputation in my eyes. That's just one person's opinion, but I expect a lot of the people who make a game that has traditionally expected so much from its players.

I'm sure they have. But like I said hopefully it will serve an actual purpose in the game for those who utilize it to its full potential, in addition to being something that more casual players can have fun with (for instance those who just want to dogfight or raid the competitors' planetary assets or something.) I mean, I didn't want to imply in my first post that I only want planetary stuff to consist of work.

EvE is a simulation. Seems to me they have plans to add all kinds of new levels of gameplay to that simulation.
Ship-to-ship combat. Mining and industry. Planetary interaction with moon mining. POS, then Outposts. First person interaction with stations, ships. Planetary interaction with colonies. Atmospheric flight and fights. First person combat in station and on ground.
Seems like the opposite way of growth for another game I know (SWG), but imagine the potential for player types, all in one game. Five years from now (which I think would be the minimum to expect atmospheric flight), EvE could be a true universe simulation, grander and more detailed than any game that's ever been.
They have a solid base, a deep backstory and interactive universe. Piece by piece, we're moving to total immersion.

so you'd rather shoot at a planetary beacon for an hour than fight over a planetary beacon on the planet? who says that the planetary planets wouldn't be part of sov control.

Personally, I don't ever see us being able to grab a joystick and fight HUD forward in space. First, the engine wasn't designed for it. Second, it's contrary to the background story and ship design.
But atmospheric flight would be the perfect place. We can't fly our space ships into the atmosphere (frigates can, as I read somewhere, but they'd have horrible dynimics). So we fly fighters and jets that would be miniscule by comparison with our regular ships. Joystick and maneuvering, here we go!
Seems like the perfect way to appeal to those players who want that fast, seat-of-the-pants fighter pilot playground. Kindof like a reverse of what SWG did.
Win win. We get to interact with planets. Those players who want to be Top Gun can do so without having to bend our regular game engine all to hell *ahem*nanos*ahem*. And CCP can perfect or use another engine altogether, allowing for it to be spread out on another server-shard, lower lag, and push the envelope on what this game can do.

actually if you read the art book the shuttles were designed just like in any sci-fi to enter planets and fly like an airplane.
I don't know if frigates will be able to enter but I believe they will be able to be brought down in dorpships and transports with heat shields, and then be able to take off and exit.
However shuttles are able to do this on thier own.
Wouldn't it be cool though to get new frigates that can enter and maybe have the option to swich to autopilot controls, and which the hud swiches over to an underbelly gun/bomb turret and you can bombard the planet?

The people behind EVE have said before they got enough ideas to fill the next 100 of years. Atmospheric flight or even something way beyond that, land based battles, ...., i just won't count on it for the next ten years.
You are talking about something so complex......
Just think about it, you need vessels able to fly in atmosphere, skills to come with that, server clusters that can switch from ambulation to space, to planetary combat to land-based combat. Yet still atm we have jita and such. And just think about how complex the current EVE is. Which only involves dock to station undock, to do, quit a lot of things while being undocked. Not to forget the things you can do while being docked.
I know CCP can do this, given time, but not, very not, soonÖ.

I think peoples like you ruin the game more, because if it have been up to you to decide what's gonna be in this game, this would been a Drake / Raven Online or Carebear Online instead of EVE Online.
And lols at you for saying hahaha it's a space mmo, it's not a planet mmo. What the hell do you think the space have?, mmmmmmmm hamsters?, mmmmm cars?, mmmmmm or maybe planets?.

It's according to how you read them and your biased beforehand. If you believe that increasing the pressures against suicide gankers in hisec by increasing security penalties and taking away insurance payouts to attackers is simply being done to boost carebearism, then the dev blogs may be doing exactly that.
Personally, I see it as a game imbalance that just so happens to help carebears think they are more secure.
If you see the 'pay to grief' comments about upcoming changes to wardec (which we have no idea what those changes will be), mean we'll see less opportunity to wardec our enemies with impunity, than I guess that alos helps carebearism.
Personally, I think wardecs are not only illogical as they are setup, but provide no real gain for either party. Since I don't know what their proposed changes are, I don't know if they'll make it possible to wardec NPC corporations, or give defenders more ways to 'win', or make wardecs more expensive to hold and renew ... I can't tell if it'll end up being progriefer, procarebear, or simply good for EvE.
And if you see changing the speeds of ships is only going to help nulsec ratters and miners escape more often, then I guess the latest testing will do just what you predict.
Personally, I know a lot of carebears who rely on nano fits to get the heck out of dodge. And it seems the dev blogs pointed out that the change was as much to fix a situation that was bugging out the server, as to make it so one single module or fit was not so prevalent in so many PvP ships.
Again, it's all on how biased you are when you read the blogs. |

reiterate to me exactly what risk high sec missioners are taking aside from the once in a while suicider? If I'm risking losing a ship in 0.0 to make money, either fix high sec missions to deal far more DPS than they do now...or go a little easier on the suicide nerf. As it stands, the isk faucet in 0.0 != the isk fountain in high sec.
And I was also referring to the increased usage of missiles with the inbound nano nerf/caldari buff. |

yes we do an according to that fast ships are getting thier roles back and won't be catched by cruisers anymore, suicide gankers now get less resistance when suiciding a target in high sec, and pirating is getting a boost in low sec where you'll now take much less almost half the sec hit for killing people in 0.4 and lower.
on other news missiles are getting nerfed edit:/HARD on SiSi. Battleships have having their mass reduced to make them faster when warping than currently on SiSi making missiles easier to avoiding the final hit.

I don't see anything wrong with having space combat be just what it is now. But if your flying in the atmosphere, might as well set it up so we can use joysticks and play Top Gun. And if you can walk around stations, give me a f*cking rifle so that sometimes I can take a pot shot at somebody.
Course, there would have to be some new, portable Jovian 'tech' or some such to explain how you can die outside.
But I am kinda with the one poster ... if one game could have great combat and interaction on all levels, all the while keeping true to the dark and decrepit EvE universe, it would probably be the greatest game of all time.
On the flip side, if the devs didn't do it right or just half-*ssed it, it would turn a great game into the WORST attempt of all time. So there's always the 'glass half empty'. |
