Anywho, had the idea in my head of a mothership, long since crashed and buried. Here is what I came up:
RELIC
Hope you enjoy.

Nice, certainly one of the better renders I'v seen here on the forums. Really can't think of any critics to offer to help you with future works... Certainly saved for future use when I get bored of my current desktop wallpaper. |

Nice. Definetly works as a background (not your common "hey it's a ship!"). And I am a graphical designer. Keep it up. |

The snow could use a bit more "rough" in it, evne if not that realistic, it would give it a more impressive look.
Jagged edges mixed with the soft powder, works wonders.
Also, the model of the ship, as is now, is basically a "blob" on the background, easily mixed to anything really.
Could use some, well, worn out logo perhaps? Needs a bit of "misty eyed" feel to it as now it's a bit too clinical.
that being said, very nice work |

Seeing what seems like a Nyx frozen in time really spurs the imagination, how did it get there, what was the fate of its captain and crew, what drove it to such a demise and so forth.
Wonderful work, I hope you find the time to do more of these.

Since it's frozen is ice, yeah... To easy!
But yeah, i'd actually like to see more of it, not in form of more of the ship itself, but rather a longer vertical veiw of the area we see right now |

I have a book at home that tells the story about a team that wants to recover 2 old fighter crafts that had to make an emergency landing in Greenland. When they first arrived they expected to find the planes easy enough, covered in say 1-2 meters of snow. However, time did it's job and they did soon find out the crafts were buried at more then 10-20 meters of solid ice. And they actualy went down to have a look at them. Seems fitting here, although the Nyx isn't tucked that deep.
I'm curious how your story will go, have a good go at it.
And did I just bumbed this amazing piece of art?

Yeah, this could really be a great scene if there was something to focus on, at the moment it's just a chunk of hull plating that a lot of eve players would struggle to identify.
Everything else is cool though.

Agreed with all these. a slightly worn Federation symbol partially covered with snow would look amazing....like the picture really has a story to tell.
There's one thing that I find very jarring though, and prevents me from saying I really like it. The ship texture. It seems terribly low-res and stretched out at parts. After staring at it for a while, it's pretty east to tell what part is just a video game model. Maybe make the Nyx a little more high-poly? Closer to the Premium client version, plus upgraded textures? |

Not going to sound defensive I hope. I agree with many of the comments. I will put in some easier identifiers to give a better sense of scale. Will also modify the camera angle slightly.
As for that video game look, well, it is from tri-exporter, and is the premium model. It's quite possible I missed the bump maps, etc. Maybe someone better with tri-exporter could provide me the path to those?
I will work on it a bit, and repost. See what we can come up with together. |

No problem man, I feel bad because I'm pretty sure I'm overly critical of everything. I personally can't run the Premium client so I couldn't really tell where the Nyx model came from (and I don't think I've ever seen one ingame before). I do think the textures are more important than the model though, but I don't know how one would go about making it better, since these are already the best models/textures Eve can offer.
I personally think the camera angle is fine the way it is though, but yeah, I guess scale identifiers could be helpful. |

did you check how big is a nix before you started making that? cause that thing must be a few kilometers long...
very awesome though, finally some creativity, don't stop, i need more backgrounds. and if you can (if its not too much work) render it in different resolutions, people will love that. |

How about some more details on the nyx, maybe some rust lines, vents etc, since it is a close up
Or maybe do the camera angle pointing up to give a sense of scale (maybe even a person in the foreground for effect)

I would really like to repost this image using the high rez Nyx and textures, but everytime I try to get the DX9 Nyx model out of triexporter, it crashes. And I have no clue how to get the high rez textures out.
If anyone would like to help me with this, I would be grateful, and would post very high resolution images for your downloading pleasure. "Never start a fight you can win." - Roc Wieler |

Oh and why not make your own texture, shouldnt take long if you just do the visible segment. Can make it as detailed as you want then

This is actually rendered in Cinema 4D with the VUE xStream plugin. I could make a texture for this, but it would be more practical to start from the existing one.

Edited by: Smagd on 29/08/2008 13:28:02 It's lovely seeing new approaches by new artists.
It doesn't really look huge enough covered in that snow, so I'd just assume it's not a Nyx but some smaller part of a ship stuck blown to smitherens.
According to this chart, a Nyx is probably half a kilometer *high* (compare to Eiffel Tower at 300m height lower left hand corner) and therefore maybe several across, which is higher than most mountains.
Or it could be a completely alien planet. That works, too.
