How much does does your online personality differ from your ingame playstyle? Mine differs quite alot, at first I was such a nice guy in eve wouldnt hurt a flea and refused point blank to hurt, harm or grief anyone. Then the longer I played eve the more of a criminal I became .
Now I take pleasure in peoples anguish and pain when I destroy thier property although IRL I am still the same as I used to be.
Now to you guys, how does your playstyle differ from your RL personality and has eve also turned you into being of pure malice?
PS: I am wearing a flame proof asbestos suite do your worst. |

Of course, this is not by my choice. |

You're describing a commong psychological phenomenon and you're not alone in this. Not that is happened to me... I'm still the over-polite, uptight perfectionist I'm in real life

I used to try to always be nice to everyone, thinking that if your a good person and never do wrong, life will reward you that way.
Now? Screw it. I care about my wife and son, but the rest can pretty much burn.
In game, I still try to be hospitable. But I don't get so upset seeing a pirate or a crook anymore. And I don't really mind telling someone that they are acting like a b*tch, either. I ain't pushing buttons, but there isn't a reason to keep a 'professional' face, either. I'll save the tact for the real world, where it counts. |

Edited by: Rhivre on 19/08/2008 11:05:59 Edited by: Rhivre on 19/08/2008 11:02:58 I am a little less fluffy in game than I am in real life, but, I am still very aware that its a person the other side of the screen, so engage brain before hitting letters on the keyboard mostly (and apologise muchly if I think the other person is feeling bad, for example Me:"erm, flying back to repair, I have 1% structure, wtf were you doing with autotarget on?" other guy: "****, I am so sorry, I really didnt look who I was shooting at" Me: "no, no, I am sorry, its my fault,I should learn to fit passive targetters"
And, yes, in the above situation, I did try to warp out when my shield was at 10%, which was after about 3 hits, but couldn't warp , and it was my fault, it had already happened with 2 other guys in the fleet, and I still didnt get the hint to go fit passive targetters
However, I am more of a leader in games than I am in real life, less shy and nervous about saying something if I think it needs to be said or organised. |

I used to be evil ingame and a real nice guy IRL, now the roles are reversed and i help peeps ingame. And now in rl I am constantly featured on crimewatch, smack talk random peeps as I walk down the street and have become pen pals with Bin Laden. |

I think the game I play affects how I am IRL...
I used to play Entropia (A game with no rules and no repercussions) and kind of turned into a trash talking scamming jerk....
Now that I'm playing EVE (A game with no rules and repercussions) I've toned down the trash talk and am generally a lot nicer to people. :) |

Edited by: Davina Braben on 19/08/2008 11:24:48 Much the same in game as IRL.
John Gabriel's Greater Internet ****wad Theory I think both gives people IRL too much credit and overplays the degree to which people forget that there's a human being on the other end of the computer. People remember, they just don't care. |

edit - damn you beat me to it
I'm pretty much the same person in game as i am in real life, i try to be nice and "moral" when i can. I apply of a rule of "Dont screw me and i wont screw you" to most things i do in eve and outside, but in rl i cant use blasters to get back at people

It doesn't change. Either you care about others, and Eve being a game doesn't change that, or you don't. |

haha very true. However I can say I'm pretty much the same ingame as in RL. The only change I noticed that over time I developed abit of that 'veteran syndrom', the 'been there done that doing it tommorow' Pepsi max feeling.
I'm always aware there is another RL person at the other side. However we all know it's not always 'what comes around goes around'. Even if you're very friendly towards people, some will still act like a ****tard.

In real life I used to work hard for a government that would kill innocent people to secure valuable resources. I would hide behind the notion of being an innocent civilian despite paying loads of taxes which directly funded weapons of mass destruction. The system I helped support not only allowed greed to prosper, but actively encouraged it. The kind of greed that benefits a very few, and causes suffering to millions.
However in EVE, nobody gets hurt by my actions, and i build more stuff than I destroy :)

Seriously, that's still lacking in censorship for forums that are PG-13. Reported, sadly |

My neighbours didn't like when I looted the cans and webbed them the instant they stepped out from the stat....house. The burgulars also looked amazed when I tried to turn the rails in front of the house screaming "TRACK YOU BASTARDS!!". I was also constantly waiting for a jump in front of tunnels. |

I'm not an ******* ingame or in real life either. Though I do tend to save it up for when someone slights me for no damn reason.
Take for instance this total ***** who cut in line in front of me at a Walmart. Here's this checkout, the girl at the till is waiting patiently, and there I am walking towards her with a smile and one item in my hand. This lady next to me with a cart full of whatevers suddenly speeds up, cuts me off, and starts to unload her groceries.
I stared at her for a minute solid while she went about her unloading. With a smile, I asked "I bet that made you feel good, didn't it?"
She kinda did a sideways glance, muttered "excuse me?", and tried to ignore.
Paraphrasing, I let loose with all 8 neutron blasters, with "Well I can only assume your home life is shit, that your husband beats you at least once a day for petty things, and your children are such s**trats you've considered suicide at least once or twice in the last twelve months alone. The only comfort you get is by treating strangers like crap, such as me with a single item in hand who would have taken maybe 10 seconds of this girl's time to ring in and pay for. But that's ok, I don't mind, I know what kind of home life you're going back to."
In a huff she took her stuff and hurried off after paying, I smiled and tossed a cheery "Have a great day!" at her back.
You should have seen the look on the cashier's face. :D
