Edited by: Epegi Givo on 21/08/2008 02:44:33 Wouldn't it be fun if tractor beams worked on other ships too? For example there are 2 corp mates, one is in a raven the other a kestrel. Then Raven has a large tractor beam and uses is on the kestrel. The kestrel then gets pulled towards the raven it tries to fly away but can't and keeps coming at the raven untill it comes to a stop right next to the raven. Then let say that the kestrel decides to use a tractor beam on the raven. The kestrel then pulls itself towards the raven untill it stops right next to the raven.
Now what I am proposing is that a new attribute be added to each ship, Engine strength. Engine strength is basicly how powerfully your ship goes forward This affect acceleration directly. The more engine strength, the faster you accelerate.
Also Engine strength helps cancel out mass like say a ship with 100k mass has an engine strength that can only carry 10k (a couple too many armor plates)This ship will have BIG trouble accelerating but say that. But if a ship that has the engine strength to carry 100k but with a mass of 10k will accelerate VERY quickly. This also ties into webs add an attribute to webifiers called "strength" this will of course be VERY high, but if a person has enough engine strength then he can lessen its effects. Maybe the ratio should be 1 engine point per point of mass, just to get the idea of number we are working with.
Now for the tractor beam revamp. There should be 4 classes of tractor beam, small, medium, large, and capital. Each class of tractor beam takes more fitting requirements and more cap than the one before it, but they each have a respectively better strength. This is where it gets kinda complex so make sure you are paying attention and aren't drunk/super sleepy or you might not understand all of it.
lets say you have a tractor beam and you are trying to pull someone towards you, here are the group of equations that are then calculated:
(your mass + your engine strength) - (enemy mass + enemy engine strength) = X If the number is positive, you pull the enemy towards you , if negative then you get pulled towards the enemy if zero then nothing happens at all to anybody.
Then the next equation is calculated:
Tractor beam strength - (enemy mass + enemy engine strength) = Y if number is negative then one of the next equations happens, if zero then the enemy is caught in the tractor beam but the tractor beam doesn't pull them in at all, they are just stuck at a stand-still position. If positive then one of you gets pulled towards the other And one of the next equations is calculated.
If somebody gets moved:
Leftover tractor beam strength - (moving persons's (MP) mass + MP engine strength) =A if positive then the MP gets pulled towards the other guy at tractor beams max pulling velocity if not then this equation is performed
(Leftover tractor beam strength / [MP mass + MP engine strength])* tractor beam velocity = how fast the MP goes towards the other person.
If nobody gets moved then this happens:
(leftover MP mass + leftover MP engine strength) - tractor beam strength = A if positive or zero then MP is totally unnafected and it is like nothing ever happened, the tractor beam has no affect on anybody, except for taking the cap of the activator. But if the number is negative then this equation is performed:
([leftover MP mass + leftover MP engine strength] / tractor beam strength) * MP max velocity = how fast the MP can now move
Little problems.
Multiple tractor beams just add onto eachother's strengths and if you tractor beam someone who is tractoring you then it adds to their tractor strength.
if multiple people tractor beam one person then it adds to whoever started tractoring first. Yes it is possible for an ibis to start pulling around a carrier like this.
If you bump somoene who is in a tractor beam then you bounce off, but they don't move.

Edited by: Epegi Givo on 21/08/2008 02:43:28 If somebody is charging at you at 1000m/s everything is still calculated the same and you can possible force him to start going 500 m/s (or whatever the tractor beam pulling velocity should be)
Tractor beam range should be increased, and have an optimal and falloff like turrets.

I could see this having all sorts of applications. Like... a BS locks onto an Inty. Begins tractoring the Inty from max range, while the Inty MWDs straight for the BS. At the last moment, BS cuts tractor and Inty veers slighty to the side. Now Inty is moving at 42 times the speed of light, and breaks the transwarp barrier. Parallel universes collide, space and time trip over their shoe laces, and cats and dogs intermarry in a San Francisco courthouse. It would be awesome!

yes a geddon with 8 tractors and tons of armor plates is viable. wouldn't be that much DPS though.
how would it be overpowered? |

Tractor beam range should be increased, and have an optimal and falloff like turrets
The tractor beam holds onto people like a really long metal pole that gradually shortens. meaning that if you are moving away from the enemy then they speed up automatically to keep up with you, while always coming closer to you at a steady pace.
If you are tractoring someone and they hit a celestial object then they bounce around that.
You can warp while being tractored, but aligning takes 5X longer and you ahve to sit waiting 10 seconds before you escape.
What do you like about it? What don't you like about it? Questions? Something to add?
I'm afraid that if you activate a MWD your tractor beam will not be able to keep up and the target will actually fall away from you.
But I like the idea of tractoring in warp. So you could pull things around. My corp once ransomed a Marauder pilot out of his ship, but we didn;t have the pilots present with the skills to fly it so we had to bump the ship as far form the gate as poss. It would have been so much better if we could've tractored it in warp to another location.
And why can't we tractor more stuff? 'Only cans and wrecks that belong to you' We should be able to tractor cans, ships, maybe even roids that are not anchored. And that would lead nicely into the player owned mini-pos's that is also being looked at (hopefully). So you could steal a big roid form the belts and set up base somewhere else. Or maybe even steal an entire moon!

when you have a MWD that increases engine strength so they can possible get away by using it.
you can't tractor things into warp , when in warp the tractor beams hold is broken. but a roqual in a mining op tractoring all of the roids to its miners would be kinda cool.
And stealing someone elses stufff with a tractor should be allowed, just a 15 minutes offense to them.

good idea in principle dunno if its technically doable by CCP but still it cant hurt to throw the idea out there
added thoughts
you could catapult a mate into a fight i.e you in your big ship or atleast bigger than your mates ship heading towards something you mate in smaller faster ship comes along from behind you towards the same point you tracter hiom towards you speeding him up then let go and he gets a temporary speed boost
thinking maybe to throw an intie at a person thats hard to catch or just in use for playing a bit a macro bowling in a belt in empire.
another idea would be to use small big engined ships as tugs for caps or battle ships cant think of a time you'd need to but im sure someone will think of one.
the downside i c with this as it possibly overlapping with the use of webs a bit unless done right.
anyways the messing with momentum games would prolly keep me entertained for a few hours (realisticish physics on it would b nice)
also have the tracter beam have a finite limit of strength so if u and the other guy are flying in opossite directions and with enuf force it breaks
ok flame away

you are describing how a web should work :-)))
anyway your lack of game experience is disturbing. not that every ship has a propulsion strength rating .... --- SIG --- CSM: your support is needed ! |

edit : also i think ships already have a newtons force for engine stat i could b just making that up and im at work not at home so i cant check i know ive seen it somewhere
Turning really fast while tractor-beaming someone should send the guy you are tractor beaming flying to stay at the same angle from you. so it is possible to catapault someone into a horde of enemies. If multiple people tractor beam 1 target then they just add onto the strength of the first one.
the cap ships being tugged is perfectly possible. if enough people tug then it is possible to tug a titan around, or slingshot a titan out of the battle.
will finish this reply when school is out, cause I gotta go. |
