Question is in the subject header -- should I be using heavy missiles or standard missiles in an assault launcher when doing level 2 missions?
It's mostly frigates with the odd cruiser and destroyer from what I've seen so far. I like the comfortable range of heavies but the sig radius on frigates hurts my dps. So, should I go for long range + painter + guided missile proj. or switch back to assault launcher with standard missiles and beef up the tank a bit instead?
I'm caldari and will be using either a Caracal or Drake (i know the Drake probably is overkill but it's better looking than the caracal :))

If you'll be usign drake for lvl2s I'd suggest putting on HMLs and AB (don't really need any sort of tank... it's a BC vs. NPC frigs and cruisers). Stick 3 BCUs in lows and you can almost 1 voley all the frigs (destroyers are softer than frigs AFAIK), and cruisers... they'r just the right size for heavys :p |

Or better than that. And way cheaper. But you'll hate it I think. Use a caracal. And fit assault launchers (light missile for cruisers) and use a passive tank on it. so its 2-3 Large shield extender and such..well, the passive fit. My caracal got over 8k of sheilds and its way too easy to do L2 mish. Like you said, its mostly frigs so using a drake and heavy's would be losing money (shooting too much missiles to blow up a frig instead of light). |

Thanks for the input. As to cheap vs expensive -- I already have both ships although not fully fitted (most expensive stuff is bought tho). Did a bunch of L2, blockade and human cattle, on my minnie char in a Rupture. That was ok but not terrific. Hurricane worked better but perhaps a pure missile boat does better in those missions. |

When I was first working through L2's as I was learning how to play I used heavies on the Caracal.
Eventually worked my way through Drake L3's, etc. . . . moved to a new area to escape Caldari-space lag, though.
As a result I hadda work my standings up again. This time I used AML's in the Caracal. My skills are better now, and as a result the lights in AML's can still fly farther than the Caracal can target, so I don't need the range of the heavies. And for L2's the lights kills the frigs faster, and still take down the occasional cruisers perfectly fine.
I've actually done a few L3's in the Caracal with the AML's -- dps isn't *that* much lower vs the big targets than heavies. I've even gone in to Cosmos complexes and killed a couple of BS's with the lights. Admittedly that took a while, but it was doable.
I'd say definitely use the Caracal for L2's and wait until you are doing L3's for the Drake.

This char has virtually 0 standing with everyone and his mother so I need to train Connections before I can try my Caracal on L2's. But the Caracal's bonuses and some decent starter skills in Missiles give me more range than I expected so it ought to work really well. Thanks again ppl.

Standard launcers (T2) on a hawk, for more fun.
I find I can AFK L2s in my hawk easier that I did back in the days in a Carceral. Of course I have better skills now than I did then.
Seriously, when I started L2s I used Assaults on a Carc, and was fine for every kill mission except Blocade and Deadly Arrival, and for those, I just wanted the range to pop the Jamming Frigs/Towers. HML+sensor booster worked great in those cases.

Assaults. L2s are mostly frigates with very few cruisers thrown in.

This is probably something you won't really consider, but a Manticore Stealth Bomber owns level 2's. Hits frigs for full damage with cruises for a 1 missile pop, and 2 salvos will pretty much do in 90% of the cruisers. Really useless, but fun.
