I have been doing L1 missions in my Moa (purchased with mining and trading $, just getting into missioning now) and I'm annoyed with my poor autocannon performance.
Fittings (all t1): 200mm Railgun 3x Dual 150mm Railgun (antimatter) 2x Std Missile Lnchr (pirahna, bloodclaw) Med Shield Extender Invun. Field Med Cap Booster 10MN AB 2x 100mm nanofiber plates Med Armor Repairer 3 small drones
The drones and missiles are doing all the work. The railguns constantly miss. I've pulled the 200mm in favor of a salvage scanner. Is it the poor slew rate? I admit my skills suck and need to be higher [2], but is that the problem?
Should I fit more resistance (adaptive nano)?

Edited by: Tamoko on 21/08/2008 14:47:46 Some observations:
* Don't split your tank. Go all shields or all armor, but not both. ** Strip off the armor plates and armor repairer, use the freed room for cap modules and/or magnetic field stabs to improve railgun damage.
* Read the Turret Tracking Guide to learn reasons why your guns might miss. Guns require active participation from you to keep them running smoothly.
* Did you really mean autocannons, or is that a typo? You shouldn't have autos on a caldari ship, ever.
Here's a little bit better setup for you. Please note that I made everything Tech-II to make sure it fits already. Scale back to T1 as necessary.

Unless the "level 1" is also a typo, that is your biggest issue. L1 missions are for Frigates not Cruisers - it would not surprise me that your number one issue is your medium guns cannot even hit the small frigates found in these areas.
Any fitting for these missions (for caldari i assume, based on Moa use) should look like this
[Merlin, Level 1]
Anyways, yah - go get a frigate, or even a dessy if you like a little more oompf on it. |

Doing level 1's means you're fighting frigs and the occasional destroyer. Just fit the 150mm railguns and carry short and mid ranged ammo. Lows should pretty much be mag stabs. Given the terrible DPS most level 1 missions put out I don't think you need more than shield extenders for tank, but if you really must then just fit a medium shield booster, an amp, a resit mod or two and something to help out with cap.
And, if you're having trouble with level 1's I shudder to think how you'll fair in the higher level missions. Then again, I used missiles which is comparably easier than using guns for missions. |

Get a Harpy. Don't double tank. Check the ship boni. Problem with tracking? Target Painters work like a charm, and use lower tier guns. Use the ****ing SEARCH function or any other forums with a ship fitting section(BattleClinic, SHC).

Keep the Moa - I had fun with the following from Lvl1's to chipping away at Lvl3's. Swap for named or Tech2 when skills/cash/luck allow.
Low x4 PDS
Mid 10MN Afterburner Medium Shield Booster x2 Shield resists as per mission.
x4 250mm Railgun (obtain better PDS/skills and you can fit 5!

As others have pointed out, your split tank is your main problem, and you are:

Like others have said, the biggest problem with your Bloa is the split tank. If you get rid of the plates and the armor rep you'll have more room for DPS increasing modules like Ballistic Control Units and Magnetic Field Stabilizers. |

Actually it looks like a noob setup... advice
I agree don't split the tank it's ment to be a shield tanker so try this: Either go with ion blasters (if the npc's come in close) or the 4x dual 150mm rails and use 2x assault launchers with what ever missile is their weakness.
In the mids you'll want 1x webber, 1x medium shield booster, 1x boost amplifier and 1x invuln
Low slots: 2x mag stabs, 1x BCU and 1x CPR or PDS

You sound new because those were mistakes Id make when I was just starting.
What you'll have to fit and train up are tracking mods- not so much damage just yet. And the previous posters are correct- tiny frigates and frigates are all youll face in a lvl 1 so turrets with higher tracking speed is more important than damage. Tracking enhancers/computers will help you. Also, railguns are some of the weakest weapons, in my opinion.
Invest all your defenses into shields. The AB isnt -that- necessary. Caldari ships have a considerably more shields compared to armor so devote your lower slots to items that improve your damage and tracking- maybe even a damage control. |

@ most of the people in this thread.
Let's review, kids.
The OP is obviously brand new to combat in this game.
He has no clue how to fit a T1 cruiser.
Keep this in mind, and then review some of the advice given, most notably, "Here's an entirely tech2 fit for you, never mind that you won't be able to put any of these modules on," and "get a harpy, because surely someone who can barely fly a tech 1 cruiser will be well served by jumping into a more expensive and uninsurable ship!" --------------- Faction-Militia:Player-Alliance::Newbie-corp:Player-corp |

So, lose the cap booster, and pick up a shield boost amplifier- that makes sense. Train up on the railgun- ok.
What about the low slots- lose the armor and pick up what? What can help my shields or my turret tracking?
(Monkey is right- this is a budget operation, can't afford any t2 gear- any suggestions how to get up to 200m ISK overnight is also welcome...).

http://www.eve-online.com/itemdatabase/EN/shipequipment/turretsbays/weaponupgrades/default.asp You'll want to train up the relevant upgrades for your turrets and missiles- being MagStabs and Tracking Enhs.
Or, on the defensive end of the spectrum, you could go for passive shields: http://www.eve-online.com/itemdatabase/EN/shipequipment/shield/shieldextenders/default.asp Add as many medium shield extenders as you can in your mid slots and fill most of your low slots with http://www.eve-online.com/itemdatabase/EN/shipequipment/shield/shieldpowerrelays/default.asp This will increase your shield recharge rate and maximum capacity. My sig sucks. |

This, TBH.
You'd probably be best off fitting a caracal. It's cheap, it's missiles, it's pretty easy to fit, and it's pretty forgiving of low skills.
You're flying Caldari so you'll likely get more out of any skill points invested into missiles than you will skillpoints invested into gunnery, at least for the immediate future. It gives you an easy lead-in to the drake and the raven, which are both mission powerhouses.
Most Caldari turret ships, with the except of the Rokh, are considered to be sub-par. --------------- Faction-Militia:Player-Alliance::Newbie-corp:Player-corp |

I mean, I could ditch the 3 railguns right now for 3 more missile launchers, even assault missile launchers. Why wouldn't I do that, if railguns suck so bad, until I get the Drake?

You could, but if you're going to, may as well fly a caracal, which will get bonuses to missiles. --------------- Faction-Militia:Player-Alliance::Newbie-corp:Player-corp |

don't be detoured by the "fly a caracal" speak. Train up the skill Motion Prediction a few levels, that will help with tracking(hitting stuff), and use longer range ammo and attack from farther away. Generally, i engage the frigs at range, burning away from them to ensure they don't get too close before there all dead. Then burn back in towards the enemies you can fight in close with antimatter, or towards the next gate engaging larger targets along the way. I like minny drones because there alil faster and tend to hit smaller ships well, this is true when your drone skills suck even with lights, and when you move up to meds with decent skills.

dont have to buy all the expensive modules, just keep them as you find them in mission loot, save up the proto's for the ferox, which you can generally get into right away once you have decent fiitting skills. Thats usually where i tell younger players, get a desty with salvager's, learning skills, a bc to mission in for alil isk while you train up the rest of your skills.

Thanks for the hint on Motion Prediction skill.
One issue- sometimes it can take me a long time to lock on, by the time I lock on starting at 20km, they're inside 5km. What skill/accessory can speed the lockon time?

Better get a Caracal and fit it like this for lvl 1 s
Highs
5 Assault missile launchers (better use bloodclaw light missiles)
Meds
3 LSEII 2 specific mission hardeners
Lows 2 BCSII
RIGS
3 Core Defence field purger
For lvl 2s you can do them using the same set up
Hiting the frigates with Moa will be a pain so better sell it and buy a caracal. Then the missions will be cake. If you insist on Moa follow one of the set ups the other guys posted for it but it will be much more easier with the Caracal

MUAHAHAHAHAHHAH!!!!! You are suggesting him to spend 45M in rigs? to be able to do L1 missions ????
his problems are: 1) he dont know ho to fit ships 2) he just bought this cruiser and abviously have not that much money to uber pimp it 3) its pointless pimp a cruiser that much for his purpouse anyway 4) he have to use small rail or if he stick with medium guns he should be far at least 20km from npc to be able to hit them.
edit: my personal hopinion: if you realy like turrets , buy a merlin. Do mission with frigs and go into cruiser only when you learned how to use them ( keeping rainge and reducing trasversal). But if you wish just the perfect ship for L1 mission then just buy a kestrell, fit 4x standard launchers and kill anything from distance ( use ab to keep range), its a good training for L2 mission ( in a caracall).

Edited by: Telameto on 26/08/2008 16:54:09 Although I hate to make you change ships, if you're set on guns, a destroyer full of 125s or 150s, with wonderful tracking bonus (already plural) will become your salvager later. Salvage can bring per mish more cash than the payout itself (melted caps and trit bars among other stuff). Destroyers fit on any lvl gate made for frigs, and you'll own the place... Stay far and run away against many frigs (don' t let them swarm you cause it's no stronger than a frig)...
edit: spelling I was just there not too long ago... Held off on cruiser till lvl 2 (which comes fast with connections to lvl 2, only a couple hours)...

Well you awnsered your question in the first sentence of your post...
But on a more serious note get a caracal and fit assault launchers (the one that shoots light missiles) some shield extenders, harderners and some shield power relays (and ballistic control units) in lows. --- -The only real drug problem is scoring real good drugs |
