I'm curious. How does player A, who mines, effect, you, Player B, who absolutely abhors asteroids? Is it because you live in nullsec and you feel you're missing out on someone who could be a possible target? Or are a lot of people feeling extra trolly? I wanna know.

People hate miners for several reasons. A) They are easy to hate. B) HIgh Sec miners are so averse to risk that when they are killed they whine to CCP about it. C) Miners are like the nerds in high school. (See A).
People who mine for pure isk these days are kind of the lowest common denominator. Because there isn't much money to be made in mining right now, and AFK ratting is so easy, there really isn't an excuse for people to be mining. |

a.) They know what it means.
b.) It's not what they are.

I personally do not mine and frankly lack the patience to do so. I couldnGÇÖt sub to a game just to watch a movie while waiting on mining lasers to tap out. But I donGÇÖt hate miners and see little point in ganking them. IGÇÖm more the sort to quietly wait and watch for someone to bring that prized Proteus out to play when considering a sport target. So why do I think some hate miners? Because it is an ISK faucet that requires little actual playing (and some would say skill) to tap and is a predominantly PVE activity in what a select group considers a PVP oriented game. They are easy kills for taking something away from another player in a PVP environment to say that youGÇÖve won one today, just another kill mail to point to. |

Miners are the equivalent to uneducated poor people in real life.
You may say in outrage, "How derogatory!". Let me break it down then.
uneducated in real life = knows next to nothing beyond popular culture absorbed through media. ignorant of so many things in life.
miners in eve = know next to nothing beyond mining. ignorant of majority of possibilities in eve
poor in rl = can't afford luxuries. usually works for minimal wage or close to. personal damage to property or other financial loss hurts
miners in eve = works for minimal wage. can't afford luxuries like a jump freighter to haul around empire afk just because it has double the HP of a freighter. personal damage to e-property hurts.

Some interesting opinions here.
You guys are probably wondering about me, but here's how I have been playing the past couple of years.
A) I mine and/or do PI B) I manufacture C) I can-flip D) I (sometimes) roam around low-sec E) I (sometimes) live in Wormholes F) My corporation is sometimes part of an Alliance (null-sec or what-have-you) G) I do missions here and there H) I lose a lot of PODs I) I do exploration J) And I run probably one of the smallest corporations in EVE
I really can't figure out what exactly it is I want to do and stick with. Wormholes are sounding attractive again, but I like being able to dock when I want to. And, yeah, this isn't the only character I've ever played with, just my favorite, for now.

OP: There's very little actual hate. The number of people who feel actual hate for miners is small and those people are taking their internet space ships -far- too seriously. What you're seeing is a very common human behavior where those who engage in questionable behavior (questionable to the miners, obviously) then develop a party line that justifies their actions. Hate? Oh no. It's just easy targets and using evocative rhetoric to prop themselves up.
It happens.
I found the "Why are miners evil." post equal parts comical and saddening. I got my start in EVE as a miner and have been mining in every MMO I've played since EQ. I can't quite explain it but I find the act calming, almost meditative. I reap actual pleasure from pulling rocks from other rocks. And, yes, I have gone through quite the rock collection IRL as well. Am I representative of the whole? Hardly, however, I also serve to disprove the black/white nature that people attempt to claim as reality.
Why don't I mine anymore? Opportunity cost, mostly. I could hisec mine but it's a -fantastic- waste of time compared to other ways to pull in isk that I then use on ships that are then blown up. What? Someone who mined to fund PvP? Impossible! But no, it's true! I could go to null and mine but then I would have to deal with null politics and.. yea.. no. I live in WHs and I mine gas from time to time but most I choose to use my cannons to mine sleepers instead. For me, it doesn't matter if my lasers are shooting rocks or rats, if I'm doing something easy to get stuff to sell so I can buy boats and shoot other players then that's that.
There's little true miner hate, Virginia. It's just bullies being bullies and not having the stones to say "I like making people sad so I can feel good." Old news. |

About the OP - There isn't a lot of hate for miners. There's a vocal few trying to use the forum to make it seem like there is, 'cause they don't want anyone fixing their "risky" gameplay...ganking miners...by making things difficult for them...like treating them as the criminals they are so proud to be.
Are you referring to me in this post, lady? I'm a nullsec miner. There is always a huge risk in nullsec. I can't begin to tell you how many Barges and Exhumers and Orcas I've lost. Mining in Null is one of the most risky things. |

I hate them because they are scum. In New Eden, there are many pirates and drones that wish to kill off the 4 races. These entities can be found everywhere. Their ships and weapons can be reprocessed into raw materials.
The miner is the laziest of the immortals. He sits around all day and rapes the environment instead of fighting the oppressors of humanity. He takes a smaller paycheck because he is a coward. He deserves to loose that paycheck. I have found countless miners asleep in the belts. Anyone who sleeps on the job while failing to use his immortality to fight its oppressors is the worst kind in my book.

A long long time ago we where all miners. Pretty golden Apocs humming away to gain the mins to build the ship to blow up other folks ships. Then barges where introduced and a special kind of player entered the game. One that is mining to mine more and then mines to mine even more. And all that for some number in some database near London.
As a result mineral prices dropped. Isogen used to be at 180 ISK back in the days. Why would you possibly want to mine for that little income? There is only one reasonable answer to that questions. Mining is easy to macro. They are all cheaters and as such disgusting. Why would you not want to hate cheaters?
The game has a tutorial that gives you a mining laser and a railgun and tells you to go shoot rocks and red crosses. It teaches you nothing else. It's been that way for 8 years, so are you really surprised that there are people who aren't aware that this is a pvp game? --Jafit McJafitson |

Risk gankers don't want to take is actually losing to player. Losing your T1 destroyer/battlecruiser to NPC isn't problem for you. For example if you fly Cane and if you even see Curse in same system you run away like a girl. |

Do you know... why I hate miners?
I'd like to share with you... a revelation... I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify miners as a species. I... realized that they're not actually mammals. Every mammal in this galaxy instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but miners do not. They move to an area and multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed. The only way they can survive... is to spread to another area. There is another organism in this galaxy that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Miners are a... disease, a cancer of this universe. They are a plague, and we... are the cure.
I... hate this place. This... zoo, this prison, this asteroid belt, whatever you want to call it. I can't stand it any longer. It's the smell, if there is such a thing. I feel saturated by it. I can taste the stink of miners, and every time I do, I fear I have been infected by it. |

I'm a career miner and I love it. But unlike some miners floating around Eve, I'm not risk averse. I mine in systems that I know are hot beds for ship destruction and I want to profit from the destruction of ships in general. The only people I hate around here are the kind of miners that think they are entitled to a pure My-Little-Pony/Risk-Free-Carebear system of mining in high-sec.
I know what you're gonna say.
Q: "But Henry, aren't you in an NPC corp where war-decs are avoided? Wouldn't that make you risk-averse?" A: No. I live in an NPC corp because I want to get away from the station-docking-games shenanigans that high-sec wardecs seem to present. Besides, while mining, I run the risk of one day facing a ganker whose ship is fitted with one purpose in mind: to lose it to Concord while inflicting as much alpha damage as possible on my ship in the limited time available before Concord arrives. I mine with one purpose in mind: to survive. Therefore, I always sacrifice yield for better tank.
Q: "But Henry, if you want to mine with the best defense possible, why not mine with a battleship?" A: Like that's gonna make a difference? If gankers want to kill my ship, they will stop at nothing to ensure my destruction even if they get not returns from it.
Q: "Don't you find it ironic that gankers are using the ships that you made to gank you with?" A: Irony is fun. But you know what's more fun? Seeing them pay you to get ganked as they buy those ships from you. They have effectively reimbursed my losses. Welcome to Eve Online. Don't expect people to be nice to you. |
