I keep running into problems with what to fit into the final HIGH slot, on almost all my ships. Most of the have X launcher hardpoints but X+1 HIGH slots, so I've got one spare.
If the ship has a drone bay, I can fit a drone range augmenting module, or I can fit a remote armour repair module. The first works well, and I suspect the second will work well too, even if it is only used for cleanup after combat.
But what if the ship has no drone bay? That's when I'm truly at a loss.
I don't want to get into some secondary weapon type, guns or artillery or anything like that. I've got very limited skillz for gunnery, and it's a hassle having to haul around two types of ammo. Also, in general, my ships tend to do fairly well in the gank department area already.
So I have this one HIGH slot to spare. Assuming I don't have CPU and grid issues, what general types of uses can it be put to?

PvP - Nos, more cap can't be a bad thing can it? PvE - Nos, or a tractor, dont bother with a salvager, salvaging with only 1 Salvager I will make you want to ram big rusty nails into your eye sockets =/

i like to fit cloaks to as many ships as i can, i'm not one for losing my hard earned isk when something as simple as a cloak would stop me from being tracked period atm
it's stupid to use it for sneaking up on stuff, unless in a recon / covert ops ship due to sensor delay, but only for the moments you need to cower :D and don't want to engage atall. if your at a safespot ect why not make youself unfindable, instead of being able to be probed out for god sake isnt it annoying when you cant tell people sigs from the post |

Pest control might be worthwhile. Thanks for the suggestion.
It occured to me that I might try installing a Capacitor Booster which would save me several MID slots of cap rechargers, but it turns out cap booster modules go in MID slots and not HIGH slots as I had assumed, so that idea is right out (I can easily find better uses for my MID slots than a cap booster module).

What does a Nosferatu module actually do against NPCs?
And yes I agree that salvagers belong on dedicated salvage ships only, such as Destroyers and (probably) Marauders. Having just one seems a bit pointless to me.

Tractor rocks for missions if you can fit it. I don't know how many times I've sucked up the damsel's little cargo pod, or pulled in a wreck to loot some reports, or whatever. Battleships are slow, and being able to pull things to you from 20km out saves a lot of time. A nos is generally a waste, and I wouldn't bother for PVE. DLA's can be good, but tbh with max skills you will have more than enough range for your drones unless you're flying a Dominix or something.

In this specific case, I'm asking about a ship with no drone bay, so a DLA isn't relevant.
The ship in question is a Hawk, inended to blitz through low-level missions without bothering to loot, although you may have a point about the one tractor beam to be able to pull in mission objects.
On the other hand, it flies something like 300 m/s, so it's much faster than a battleship. On the third hand, though, I have no plans for fitting any kind of AB or MWD (which might be a mistake), so having a tractor could be nice.
Or... The ship can fly 300 m/s, and the tractor can only pull at 500 m/s, so if I'm stationary the tractor isn't even twice as fast as flying towards the target, although of course if I combine the two I get 800 m/s which is respectable.
Decisions, decisions, decisions...

an offlined smartie between your guns:
x = gun s = smartbomb
x-x-x-x-S-x-x-x-x
will net you an overload bonus, since the offlined smartie acts like a heat-sink reducing the damage to the guns.
if fitted another way, say like how you think it should go in fitting:
x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-S
Only the last couple of guns benefit from the offlined smartie. -

NPC's appear to have a cap reserve that is ONLY there to be nosed. They dont' use cap for any real purpose (i.e. they don't require it to cycle guns/tank modules), and the cap doesn't appear to regenerate. Essentially, you can look at those tackling frigs that buzz around at point blank range as handy cap boosters. Once you stop getting cap off of them, pop the frig and start siphoning from the next.
Personally, I don't have problems with cap stability because by and large I only activate my booster when I head to the next room in level 4's. Getting a perma tank is a suckers game, and why bother making the sacrifices in fitting to make it happen when all you really need is XL Booster + AMP + 4 hardners. |
