Ok, so first things first - this is not a rant about Jita being laggy or a suggestion on fixing it, this is a simple question...
Why is Jita such a busy place? Why is trading so high there? _____________________ I'm not afraid to die My soul will carry on You can't kill me I'm Imortal |

It's close to the biggest concentration of players (most caldari, many running missions for the Caldari Navy), it's close to many other regions for trade, it has plenty of stations. And once a place like that gets started and 'known' to be a trade hub things begin to spiral, people go there to get cheap ships because it's where you go to get cheap ships. People go to sell things there because it's where you go to move product. And even if you tried selling your items somewhere else close by, some people will pay more to buy everything in the one location. It's like a black hole thats mass is increasing because it's pulling things in, becoming ever more effective at pulling things in ;)
Note, it won't always be the cheapest place to buy things, but if you pick an entire ship fitout from one location it will almost always be the cheapest.
But seriously, avoid on weekends it's hell.

your all wrong.
The reason Jita is so busy is because it is on the North-south pipeline that splits empire space. there is no way to go from Amarr space to the rest of empire and by proxy, from the north to the south, without going down that pipe. __________________________________________________ |

On the most basic level, players are the primary reason why there are so many people in Jita.
Players have chosen that place to shop from. The old trade hub was Yulai. It is what it is, because at it's very heart, EvE is still player-driven. Players could have easily chosen Amarr, or any other place for these kinds of trades.

Maybe it's time you recognize that you don't really like to play EvE.

agents do seem to send a fair few missions to Jita as well.
so you're looking (at full capacity) nearly 700 players in Jita. As mentioned before, around 200 of those probably don't need to be there. And on top of that you have nearly 100 players who've been sent there by agents for missions. I've personally turned down 4 Jita missions in a row.
They could probably cut a fair bit of lag by stopping agents sending missions to Jita. I'd suggest removing agents from Jita stations as well, but i'm not sure if thats really practical. ____________________________________ THE BLACK ALLIANCE |

It is by and large. The hubs from other Empire's space usually have certain items that they beat Jita on for price, but they aren't as convenient to get to if you aren't already in that region.

Dunno about you but I get to Rens from Amarr quite fine without having to cross Caldari space - or low-sec for that matter...

LetÆs say you need to buy some stuff. You probably want to get it all in one place so you go to the station with the most stuff for sale.
And letÆs say you need to sell some stuff. You probably want to sell it in the place with the most customers.
Stuff starts selling a little better in one station, for whatever reason, and the sellers take note. They all start selling in that station. The buyers realize they can get everything in one place and bookmark the station. Soon the buyers just fly to that station before even checking the market every time they need something. Sellers realize that thereÆs not a lot of point in selling outside of that station and stop putting up orders in other places.
Once the cycle starts it tends to reinforce itself until a major hub forms. This time it just happened to be at a station in Jita but it could have been somewhere else.

Edited by: Ris Dnalor on 30/08/2008 07:33:01 Once upon a time the stargate system was aligned differently so that the quickest way to get from any of the major 4 empires to another of the major 4 empires went thru one system... Yulai...
This created a marketplace early on in eve and everyone went there because it was the center of the stargate superhighway....
Well, all this traffic was very hard on the server clusters, as you not only had the shoppers and sellers going in and out of yulai, but also anyone that just wanted to get from one region to another also was flooding through that system.
So CCP decided they would change the stargate system to bypass Yulai and hopefully reduce the lag for weary travellers...
At this time many very wealthy folks decided to move their merchant operations to JITA and build a market there that would rival the old Yulai market...
Suffice it to say they succeeded and grandly so. Just imagine if you had to fly thru Jita every time you wanted to go from one Empire to another... *shudders*
So, the short answer to your question is "Because some players decided to make it that way." -- No love for the Matari |

personally I believe Jita is so full because they want to create so much lag, that they can jump on the forums to whine about it...

It all started because Caldari, by percentage, makes up the largest played race in the game. Jita, a Caldari system with Caldari mission agents, used to have alot of Level 4 Qty 20 agents. So naturally it became the largest mission hub in the game. With eve's players being incredibly intelligent, traders saw where the largest collection of players in the game was and moved their goods there to sell. The rest is history with ISK farming missionrunners/ice miners, scammers and everyother fella looking to make some ISK moving in. Later CCP removed all agents from system and took out ice belts from Jita to ease the lag in system but all trading remained there. So you are where we are today.

Hehe, how true. But I do check the market and still go i.e. Isanamo - Moon XXI for all my cheap cruiser "i want to pew pew" needs. :) it's kind of a ritual to me by now. xD Also Nourvukaiken is getting quite nice to shop. And since the OMG-FW-Hype ceased the lagattacks are getting less, too.

Jita is so busy because people think it's cheap and the producers get good prices.
The easiest way to fix it would be a global market view (like eve-central.com, but ingame).

Jita is so busy, because the game trade mechanics enforce the building of trade hubs!
1. The more players are regularily in a system, the more interesting it gets for traders. 2. The more traders are there, the more competition and offers are there, which makes is more interesting for customers. So we have again more players attracted to Jita, back to 1.
For that simple reason the situation will never improve without changing the rules that enforce this attraction to one trade hub!
Solution could be some kind of virtual wallstreet, so that traders can trade without beeing at a specific place (and I mean also over region borders!). This would also require some kind of automated transportation between the traders for no cost, otherwise they will still meet in one trade hub. And for customers the solution would be to offer a home-delivery-service, so that they can stay where they are and buy what they need. But it will only work if it does not cost a single cent, otherwise customers will still go there to spare a few cents... CCP is discussing some home-delivery-service for quite some time now, but I fear that if they ever implement it, it will cost ISK. That may be logic/fair in game terms, but it will corrupt the purpose.
All other proposals I have seen so far fight only the symptom, not the root cause!
Regards, Eve G. (<-- inhabitant of Jita, that has NEVER left Jita 4-4 since born 1 year ago )
