It would probably help if CCP had an office near a major university offering a top-rated postgraduate program in software engineering. That way they could recruit programmers who have actually been trained to solve these problems, instead of people who specialize in drinking and ignoring the weather.

Lag during fleet battles? Can CCP do something about this after the nanonerf and walking around in stations and maybe creating swimming pools in the stations so we can have a nice dip after flying around in space shooting Guristas. Ooh, and karaoke that we can tie into eve voice and maybe a giant bay window beside the undock so we can see all the armour and hull reppers and PA outside and paint them with our painting skills and sell them on the market for lots of ISK so I can buy a CNR and run level four missions so I can afford the best lasers for my CNR to help avoid the lag created by Faction Wars and Jita and then my character can have a massage and a drink and watch the exotic dancers and I can take a screenshot for my folder, no reason, and then go to a gallery and look at all the nice sculptures made from the bits from wrecks all soldered together and then maybe a haircut and back to my place and I can look at all my 3D holocerts for flying ships that I can fly and who cares about lag I'm just gonna run around the station talking to my eve buddies in the same station and, what, you can fly spaceships in this game?

edit: i heard posting on the forums makes lag?
Maybe their ploy is to get so much of eve into the same laggy mess all of it will consider less lag a new feature and they won't need to pump out expansions for a year or two as they just upgrade servers |

Welcome to life outside empire mission-running. Seriously, welcome. Maybe if enough empire-dwellers complain CCP will actually do something useful about lag. Also factional warfare should have missions that involve jumping into a carrier fleet with fighters out, and getting DD'd. for the "experience".

I suspect that the lag problem is systemic (i.e. how the system is designed in general), and thus, the lag cannot be "fixed" unless EvE is rewritten. Perhaps CCP should hire or get a few courses on algoritmics. I wouldn't be surprised if most of their calculation complexity is of the n2 (n square) complexity (or worst), whereas they should strive for n log n or simply n complexity .
Computational complexity theory
Case in point, the early implementation of gang bonuses. Originally, everyone in gang could give bonuses and the highest skill in the group "won". That's a n square complexity; every real time cycle, you need to check for the best bonus. Any real time software engineer would tell you this is a big no no.

Pretty disappointing, but this is spot on. A lot of tactics used in FW revolve around lagging out the enemy fleet so they effectively cant play and thus being sitting ducks for the first few seconds/minutes of the fight.
Frequent quote from one of our FCs: "Orbit this gate at optimal, we'll wait for them to jump into us. Get your drones out, we're lagging them out!".
I sure hope the next expansion will include certificates for creating lag. ____________________

So, I see the old "talking in local creates lag" argument has resurfaced.
The faction warfare people could save a lot of time by reading a lot of the 0.0 and CAOD threads on lag and just copy and paste information from there.

More interesting, will it fix lag?

You think 3 minutes lag is bad, try 0.0 warfare sometime. And yes, those shiny 1B+ costing ships are affected just as much.
Now for some practical combat hints: as lag is the deciding factor in basically any large battle, do as follows:
- Never mind armor/shield reps, they won't activate in time. Simply fit as many hitpoints as possible (armor plates, shield extenders), and pray you survive or fly out of range in time. - Only use long range setups, because chances are the target you're shooting is still in range when after 15 minutes your guns activate. (I wish I where kidding about the 15 minutes, too) - Only fly Amarr - no gun reloading.
Now that we got these basic points out of the way, WELCOME TO 0.0 WARFARE

It's Schadenfreude!
It's worth noting that ships lost in pvp due to lag or flat out exploding servers will not be reimbursed by CCP. Die after being frozen for 15minutes and the node crashing? The logs don't show anything, besides if you engage in pvp you should be expecting this sort of lag!

In case you didn't catch that, here it is again.
AAAAAHHHAHAHAHAAAAHHHAAAAA..
Mess with your settings all you want won't change the fact that it's most often SERVER lag not CLIENT lag ******S. Until all the whiny morons see a blob, have an idea what 15 minute chat lag and 20 minute module looks like we will continue to have these kinds of ******ed threads.

The lag must be a direct result of system security status being too high, too many concord ships around and turrets and things at gates. I've got to say that large fleets in 0.0 space run buttah smooth these days, even with all the brackets on! Motherships on grid with fighters outOHWAI **node burns**

Anyone who thinks that even "heavy" chat-spam in local causes a significant enough amount of lag to actually lag someone out is pretty ****ing ******ed.
Anyway, uh...welcome to what we face in 0.0 warfare. We've been complaining about it for years and have been ignored. Maybe now that the majority of the userbase (ie, empire dwellers) complain about it, they'll fix things. I'm not holding out too much hope though.

I didn't read the thread, are people tossing around the same stupid fixes that don't actually do anything at all?
Guess what guys, playing from the map, playing without effects or sound, rubbing cheetah blood on your computer, overview settings or your players age doesn't do anything when the node is taking 30 minutes to respond to any command.
Yeah It will improve your fps and graphical lag, but the lag everyone complains about is server side and it doesn't matter how fancy your client is personalized against lag when hundreds of people simultaneously regardless of settings all freeze up for long periods of time.
