I'm looking at finally setting up an empire POS, and even though I'm sure the answer probably is to be found if I data mine the available guides I'll make a newb question of it instead:
About how many units of whatever empire ice do you need to fuel a small/medium/large tower?
Just pondering the feasibility of cutting down operating costs by doing some semi-afk mining when I normally only would be watching the market orders on this account.

Considering that ice is pretty much at an all time low in price and you only make between 2 to 3 million isk per hour mining I would recommend against it.
You can mine veld and sell the trit to make enough isk to cover your fuel cost for the month. I have found that getting all the stupid NPC goods to be more of a chore than getting the ice.
If you must mine ice, consider that a hulk with cargo expanders and rigs can top out at 17k m3 which means you can let it sit in an ice field for over an hour and not have to worry about it. Now, if I stumble across you then you can bet that I am willing to take a security hit to blow up your pretty toy

Any sort of rigs on Hulks are pointless. Mining is bad enough, and having to actually slowboat it across space instead of repackaging it and stick it in a transport whenever you move makes it worse.
Oh, and this "CONCORD have gone through multiple changes in organization and effectiveness. The spawn sizes have been reduced to one battleship and two cruisers, however, these ships have increased damage output and a broad range of electronic warfare to prevent escape. In addition the Energy Neutralizing batteries will completely drain a ships capacitor almost instantly. CONCORD will also proceed to eliminate any discarded player drones. CONCORD response times for aggressing a neutral player in High Security space have also been significantly reduced."

I don't think the CONCORD changes have been implemented yet. |

Approx 250/500/1000 blocks for small/med/large for month. I would use cargo expanded hulk in afk mode for that if I would must. Altho as time is isk then I actually do lev 4 missions and buy my fuel with that isk. It is considerable time difference in hours on how long you need to slave to keep it ticking. |

Hmm, with the time I think I'd spend doing it afk I'd probably not get more than hundred blocks a month... so probably better to make sure the thing makes me enough money to pay others for staring at icicles. |

If you're going to mine ice, consider a Mackinaw rather than a Hulk as the bonuses look better. I've never done it, so I could be wrong. |

No sane person is mining ise in hi sec actually sitting at computer and looking the screen. For AFK style Hulk is better, as you can mine ice in it by visiting your computer every half hour. Approx 30 blocks per hour. Not as productive as mack, but it's afk.
Mack is good for 0.0 mining ops where you actually need to pay attention, but one does not mine 'isotope' ice in there usually. Or if you are one of those who mine ice in hi sec when actually sitting on your computer, altho in that case mining minerals, selling them, and buying the needed ice products would net you better yield (ie more of those ice products than you would get by mining ice in mack in hi sec). |

Large tower takes 450 Isotopes every hour so 1.5 ice per hr in high sec. 10800 isotopes per day or 36 blocks per day. 75600 isotopes per week or 252 blocks per week.
Medium takes 1/2 while a small takes 1/4... you can do it from here.

Any ice mining with a hauler: Mackinaw hands down will mine more than a hulk regardless of setups.
AFK mining wise, the amount doesn't differ that much between setups really. Here is a spreadsheet that shows the differences in setups and mining amounts (in a 4 hour period to make the differences a little more apparent), assuming 90 seconds spent traveling to and from station.

Your "oh, and this" actually means that now it's slightly MORE worth rigging a Hulk, since suicide-ganking them is slightly harder. After the next patch, when insurance for CONCORD kills will also go away, you'd be pretty much invulnerable from smart suicide-gankers that are after profit... the occasional stupid ones that don't calculate their costs, or guys just after revenge instead of profit, well, against those you never really had a chance.

Have to get started somewhere, right? It felt like a waste of effort to trace the numbers from the tower's isotope requirements through skills and equipment and all the way out to the ice field just to get the rough estimate I wanted...
And thanks to everyone who provided some actual information and proper spelling.

You need to download a program called "My POS". You can find it here on the forums, it supplies you with the fuel needs and lets you play with the fittings.
