Proof of this, nao.
The only "free" version I can find is the trial, and that has parts locked away/missing. I even opened it up with a friend to see if it was just locked up... no go, missing data. -

2 days 9 hours ish left to go here. It should be a entertaining respectable rts with a fair amount of fun and replay ability. Expansions will hopefully build on the game. I would personally like to see some darker game mechanics like enslaving other species ect ect.
Under water city's/underwater creatures. Space stations. the cell stage template could be used for a interesting bio weapon super weapon type things. expanded space combat/fleet warfare.
I am very happy to see the toy feel of the game remain though. not everything needs to be super serious.

I don't see how it could ever be super serious with customizable creatures. Had it been there had been all kinds of nerds coming out of the woodworks claiming that the game engine didn't take into account the gravital pull on the aging ***** monster, rendering it a limp biz kit slithering on the ground for movement as opposed to the youthful bouncing propulsion it once possessed...

It's EA, they don't need anymore money right now.
I'll probably just wait for the price to go down to buy it, but it does look really cool if it is truly all that it's cracked up to be (people seem to have forgotten that it might not be as good as all the hype puts it to). |

Sorry. EA's not getting my money for a game I can only install 3 times. Whether it be upgrading my OS/reformatting(which I do quite frequently) or upgrading certain pieces of hardware. I'm sorry but I'm paying $60 for a game I intend to own for a lifetime, not for 3 activations.

Playing the game for the last 10 hours or so. I'm at the beginning of the tribal stage (tried to find everything i could in the creature phase... Otherwise it won't take you that long :P)
The gameplay is entirely brilliant if you take it away from the editors and... Bla bla bla. Spore is just a bit of fun... Don't expect it to be worth thousands of hours of longetivity - That is, if you don't play around in the editors too much.
The cell phase just looks frickin brilliant. It really is a simple game, but it *works*. Needs a bit of skill aswell to be able to kill certain other cells. It's over very quickly though.
The creature phase feels a bit like a drag after a while. All you do is eat, and fight or befriend other small packs of creatures. It feels a bit stretched out, and for some reason i am locked out of certain body parts (omni/herb mouths, i chose carni at the start, but took an omni mouth in cell phase). Still, you'll see a moon and some planets in the sky - Those are actually *there*, waiting to be colonized in the space phase. If you get jump/glide on 4 or 5 aswell, you can jump high enough to see the curvature of your planet... It's just a really nice look to it, so nice that you'll forgive the gameplay shortcomings, really. It did make me think of Populous 3 sometimes, though :)
So far, it's everything they said it would be - An "evolve" game, which is centered around it's editors. Don't expect a depth of gameplay like Civ or whatever in any of it's phases, but that's exactly what Wright said it would be in the original GDC video - A stripped out version of the gameplay of many other games.
It's still pretty fun though, worth the wait :)

I'm having a real hard time justifying buying the game for myself with the EA three-installs-per-disc scheme.
If there was a way I could pay Maxis premium money directly, I'd even pay double, to get it without three installs only I'd do it in a heartbeat.
But now, I don't know, maybe I'll get the version...

EA wins this round. Granted they've been on a losing streak tbh.
The only 2 games I've bought from EA was Mass Effect (collectors ed. I know there's a future in this game as a collector's item), and Spore (just because its going to be a game-generation-defying game. Look at SimCity for once, and The Sims as well. Will Wright is on the ball. Sad that EA went and swooped em up with that draconian copyprotect) -

I got my copy today too (UK). gameplay.co.uk is awesome like that.
I loved the look on the face of one of my co-workers who ordered it from EA's online store. They paid ú40 I think (-ú5 discount for buying the ú5 creature creator, which cancels out), can't play it until tomorrow, and don't get the physical disk or manual. I paid ú27, +ú1 delivery, +ú5 because I bought the CC too (which still adds up cheaper than them), got it the day before them and got an actual physical copy.
I'm just awesome.

more like "Damn you Maxis!" since they're the ones who made the game, not EA. EA just shoves it out into the market with their draconian copy-protect.
In any case, I dont see the space age as the end. Will Wright said it himself that the game really opens up by the space age.
Its as if cell, creature, tribal, and civilization were addons to essentially a space-borne god game.
A friend who has the UK copy (sneaky him, he's showing me the box right now on skype, the bastard), assures me that its very sandbox-y, and that his first play-through netted the space age at 13 hours.
His second playthrough, 15 hours in and still at creature phase. Reason: "Cause I want to take my time this time, and I think it'll take me a week till I'm satisfied."
Sounds like Will Wright material to me -

Yeah. Having played it, I'm fairly dissapointed at the length. Each stage only seems to take about an hour to go through. You can't stretch that hour out either. Once you get to the end of the stage, you can kinda wander around, but there's really no point. Your actions in the stage play no major consequence in the next, and parts/upgrades you gather are rendered useless in the next stage

Wikipedia article: Spore (2008 video game)
According to it:
Quote:
PC: Windows XP/Vista 2.0 GHz P4 processor or eq. 512 MB RAM (768 for Vista) 128 MB video card (Pixel Shader 2.0 support) 6 GB HDD Internet connection. (For computers using built-in graphics chipsets: Intel Integrated Chipset 945GM, 2.6 GHz Pentium D CPU, or 1.8 GHz Core 2 Duo, 768 MB RAM)
I say its system requirements are quite "mainstream". A quick test via the Creature Creator (said to be the most CPU-intensive of Spore, because of the creature editor and procedurally-generated animations from the creature coming out the other end) on my PC, a AMD 3400+ with a 8600GT, produces a "middleground" quality-performance outlook.
Only major slowdowns I've noticed is when I had zany legs going in directions not possible by physics. -

It's a warm welcome to the world of modular linear Progress claiming to engage creativity they say... Can someone tell me where the need is to switch from one stage to the next?
There's no real reason you need to progress to the next stage, just there's no reason to stay. By the time you reach the pinnacle of the stage, and prepare to move on to the next, you're so overwhelmingly powerful that only a few creatures can even kill you, and those are so big they're more of a wandering instant death factory. You can wander around collecting parts to make your creature look weird, but other than that, you've already unlocked the most powerful parts by the time you "level" so even that's just an exercise in aesthetics

What a load of shit,
The game gets way boring way fast, even the building your "thing" gets boring.
It does have a few funny things tho but just not enough to keep meh interested, shame I was hoping for a lot more from it.

But how's the multiplayer relations aspect? Surely that alone could create needs for specific designs, in time. I mean how good would an army of charmer creatures do against an army of blade swinging, claws clipping tribe? How do you balance out the mix between charming and agression on one creature? And Why? If you take Eve when it first started, people found out their own reasons to choose a specific fitting for a new situation. They probably had little idea at the start. I dunno, I wasn't there, I would've loved to be there when Eve started though.
So for spore, how is the fact of you putting only one claw on your creature's butt affect your aggression stats as opposed to having them on 2 front arms?
If this game feels like decisions aren't taken from a situation, I really don't get what people saw or thought they saw in it.

I put maybe 8 hours of gameplay into it and pretty much seen everything it has to offer. After this point, it's not more than a glorified screensaver merged with a very, VERY light version of "Elite". So... we waited 3 years for THIS to be the end-result of "a revolutionary game" promise ? Dissapointing.

There's really no need for balance. Collect enough dna and you've got a perfectly good death machine that can dance, sing, charm and pose with the best of them, all that's involved is just sticking random bits on your character, there's no need to stick them on your arms or anything like that. hell, there's no clipping, so you could pile every piece of your creature onto its left kneecap if you were so inclined

What hype were you exactly trying to not buy in?
Spore turned out exactly like they said it would turn out. No one created a hype except some people who made up stuff that "will be in the game". Reread all the press releases, watch all the presentations (by wright himself), and you don't find any "broken promise", nor any kind of hyping.
I for one am finding stuff that they didn't talk about (specifically) before release, and i'm thoroughly enjoying it for what it is.

It's a sandbox and achievement game. That's like calling Unreal Tournament a bad game because it has no storyline. Ok, I lied there, UT does have a storyline, but it is crappier than a B film and you buy the game so you can frag people over teh interwebs.
I've personally went ahead and gone for as much achievements on the first playthrough as possible.
Spore does not spoonfeed you a story like for example Mass Effect, which was more like watching a good movie where you controlled the character. Spore is more like playing with clay when you were still in kindergarden and making up the entire story by yourself

That would be all well and good, if spore had compelling or interesting gameplay, however, while in my view unreal 3 does what it does well, spore shows that it has obviously been stretched too thinly. Personally, if I wanted to play the cell phase, I'd play flow, if I wanted to play the creature phase, I'd play wow, If tribal, any number of rts' and so on. Of course people's opinions will differ to mine, but I see spore mainly as a choice between completing a good game in 10 or so hours, or playing mediocre games for 20-30

Did you like the sims? I found that one to be pretty boring and stretched too thin until I actually began to understand the concept of sandbox games. I "finished" that one pretty fast too, but I had no interest in spending more time on it. Still I like spore a lot better. I guess in the end it boils down to personal taste. If everyone would like spore then EA would rule the world. I bet they wish they did.
You're right about the cell phase resembling flow, and all other resemblances for that matter. I think they even said at one point that flow was their source of inspiration for the cell phase.

Great fun to be had. Normally i play a RTs game through its story mode and then maybe for a normal amount of online or skirmish sessions.
Even in SoaSE my longest game was only 32 hours split over a month.
spore could easily clock up this i feel. So i am gonna go out on a limb and say its the best rts game made in the last 10 years. Simple or not. I personally look forward to EA's milking us with expansions on this one.
I think theres a massive amount of potential in expansions for spore.. Keep em at ú10 though and i wont cry.

The people who are going to love Spore are the kinds who enjoy creating things for the sake of creating things. Wil Wright has always created his games around that concept - Sim City let you create your own cities. The Sims let you create your own houses and families within them. Spore lets you craft an entire Species in a galaxy of virtually limitless scope.]
Were you expecting some masterful piece of design that was incredibly strategically deep to the point that it distracted from the vision of creating whatever you want? It's not something you buy to experience as a typical game. It is a toy.

I've just had a go at it myself at a neighbor's place (yarr-ed edition, of course, the cheapstake he is) and I have to say, its the "easiest" sandbox to get into and have your own fun.
Definately not for some people who want the game itself to throw it something interesting from time to time. The point of Spore is, as Will Wright said it himself, to "let the players have their own fun".
Definately solidified my purchase of the game. Neighbor says he's getting the Galactic Ed soon as he can too. -

I just bought the game. I got through the cell phase quite quickly, and am now in the creature phase. It's actually quite fun, although most of the actual enjoyment is in creating the creature and making it look cool. The game play is strictly average, but that said, there are 5 games here.
Of course, when my 3 installs are used up, I'll have to look into getting a crack for it. Don't suppose anyone knows how to get one? __________________________

Edited by: Ryan Scouse''UK on 05/09/2008 18:33:40 I got the game on the 4th downloaded it - played about 14hrs of it & am in the spacestage with half the weapons that you can get, its a very amazin game - & whats funny is ..
If you play say 10hrs without saving & die.. when you start all over again everything changes storyline the player models the missions etc etc - thats if you was to enter the next stage I was taken back to the RTS stage just before the spacestage bit of a tw ** but I noticed all my allys & what not had changed so had there missions :)
Its a really good sandbox to play around with - I will defo buy the game I think when I see what other bonus stuff you get from playin online - at the moment I play offline & its still very amazing.

OK i am up to space stage and have all but the planet buster. even though i am a aggressive civ i have found that buying planets can be very effective as combat in the early stages of space can be very very hard. and almost impossible to capture hostile planets (on hard mode ).
There has been a lot of comments of how the constant pirate attacks and eco disasters are annoying. if u do them though u unlock stages of badges (skills) that let u access better equipment. also if u have a stable area of space with allies around u or just no hostiles or neuts u will lower the amounts of these.
weapons at the end stages of space can be overpower full. there is no real need for the PB.
What i want and need in a expansion:
1: space empires should be able to seed a new planet. Doing this effectively pauses space stage and takes you back to cell stage. You then play a open ended version of each previous stage where you have a req amount of dna/food/tribe kills ect to adv to next stage. by killing other species/tribes you lessen competition in next stage.
KEY:Other species on your planet can advance at on rate into what ever stage. If you FAIL to reach civ before the other species and they then kill u (to bad and back to your space empire you go and have to try again).
2. Space station once you reach a set point (t3 eco with 3 colony's) you can deploy a space station. This fully protects that planet from pirate attack and eco disaster. and will hold of upto large hostile fleets.
3. For pure fun.
Sun Buster. Causes a supernova. Wipes the system off the map.
that would be my personal list for a first expansion.

Well after gettin a massive bug - from starting a new save game file my Spore was errored out lost everything had to totally remove & reinstall starting all over again.
Anyways did that shot to the space stage pretty quick la la la ,
got everything weapon wise & just gettin the last 2 or 3 mess around creature effects.
Got 15million credits, about 9 allies & only 1 war target who will soon be destoryed. I think I have finished the space stage? Nothing else I can do now.. dont need Credit got all the fancy weapons.
What I really want is to be able to change a planet & go back & play it as a normal creature instead of bein stuck in the space stage I would like to make my own planet + tree's etc etc & play it! :)

The ending of the space stage are the Grox.
That said, I don't see why people whine about pirates - just get uber cannons on each system, problem solved...
Pretty much, have one spare uber cannon all the time in your cargohold, and when anything attacks one of your planets, go there, put it down, get lost... Larger fleets (4+ empires) you will have to take care of yourself though.
Once you get "Shield" for your craft, the game is on easy mode. Also, for money, try to get purple/pink/blue/green spice planets up to T3 with Spice expansion. The trick is not to have a lot of allies/planets, it's about quality vs quantity. Better have like 10 systems with fully developed planets and good resources, than 20 systems.
Regarding allies, you need allies around you, not further out, so all aggressors first bounce off your allies.
All that said, planet buster is really good for reducing empires to dust. Just go to their homeworld, and nuke it. Normal planets are easy to take. Trade routes are very good, money is pretty much never an issue if you don't overextend your planets. Keep it small&developed. EW Guide - KB Tool - My Music |

reinstalling on the same system doesn't deduct an install. (They're hardware specific) Mass Effect has the same protection. Even changing the videocard doesn't take off an authorisation. Just don't install it on several PCs. (not without cracks anyway)

Aaah I thought they meant 3 installs on the same system. That's not so bad in that case.
Am I just an idiot, or is the space stage really really hard? I keep managing to **** off other empires (without ever actually contacting them, let alone attacking them). Here I am, with 10k credits and some random empire I've never met before says "Give me 70k or I hit you with big stick" then declares war because I couldn't pay him. Then they bring their mega death fleet and level my homeworld colonies one at a time while I don't have enough credits to mount a reasonable defence.
And that's on easy. __________________________

- When your homeworld is attacked, don't go planetside. Because (bug or feature) the AI doesn't destroy any cities if you stay in space - it just levels your structures. This way you can never lose your homeworld. Edit: Works on homworld only!
- When you meet a new race greet them with "I come in peace". Instant +10 standing. Then donate 10k. You're neutral now. Run 2 missions and you're set. Open a traderoute for continous standing gain.
- When you have two allies and they declare war on each other, help neither. Make sure you have traderoutes open with them so the standing loss for not helping out will balance.
- Any superpower you use (e.g Planetbuster) will instantly net you -50 standing to all known races.
- Trade with your allies, never yourself. Standing gain.
- Get the autoblaster upgrade asap - will help making fights much easier
- When attacking an enemy planet do strafing bomb runs. This way you can flatten one planet after the other because you are to fast to be caught by incoming fire.
- Don't overexpand. It's better to have 10 T3 colonies than 30 T0.
This should help a little.

I managed just fine on hard... You are doing something really really wrong.
War is hell at start. Try giving them "gifts" even 10k is enough at start. Make allies, send those allies to attack your enemies.
A couple fully built T3 planets are better than 10 T1 planets. EW Guide - KB Tool - My Music |

Wow ur really unlucky I am on normal mode- I just found neut players & gave them money + ran a few missions for them & so on - I am a proper little trader its the best thing to do - just build up ur credits buy from 1 planet sell to another & just keep doin that over.
Find a planet ( alliance ) who home world sell 1 spice then buy all of it in bulk & sell at another planet for profit keep doin this till you have to much Credit & max cargo holds :) easy easy ! thats space stage done.
I did run into Grox btw tryed to run missions with them & stay friendly seems you cant do it as you start off at -70 +35 so I dont think you can ever have them as a ally I even tryed super happy ray it would never go past neutal with them really guess you just cant have them as a alliance :(
Anyways dont even try to think about destorying them there ships just rip you apart! :P

Edited by: Ryysa on 08/09/2008 16:39:07 If you have ship with maxed out weapons, you can fight them. With shield you are invulnerable half the time, so it's not a big deal.

na na - its shield + that 320k a shot bomb that destorys a city =P how much credits you got ? I Got 30million & got bored bein a trade *****!!
& yer I guess I could fight them if I kept my shield up but meh ! my allys (5) all die instant!
p.s so apart from the constant grind to kill all grox - what else is there to do in the space stage I have every weapon all am lacking is the creature size em up & creature maker .
I Got over 15 allys all of who surround my tiny 9 planets most of them are 5 stars - which is kinda crap still as they only have 1800 health each per ship.

Don't need shield, shield is only needed when you get 5+ enemies on your tail, also 1-2 megabombs is enough, because 99% of Grox colonies are T0. Also, money is irrelevant, i can make 10m in 5 minutes if I need. The tactic I use is, that I made a really good system at "home" (it's on the edge of the galaxy), with ~20 colonies T3 + full upgrades, then went to Grox space, Ninja-ed a colony up there with full upgrades, and as long as I defend it, they can't take it... So now I am slowly moving towards the galactic core.
You don't have to fight all the grox, just find a small hole with a "no-influence" zone of them, closer to the core & dump a colony there, so you can buy/repair. Make money at "home" first...
Quote: & yer I guess I could fight them if I kept my shield up but meh ! my allys (5) all die instant!
Allies are pointless.
Quote: I have every weapon all am lacking is the creature size em up & creature maker .
Creature size em up is useless, it makes one creature really huge, but it attacks your cities. It's better to annoy enemy, but turrets kill it in 2 sec... EW Guide - KB Tool - My Music |

Ok for any who have got bored of space stage and feel they have say 10mill creds all the empire they want ect i will tell u what u are probably not gona be bothered to find out.
Your objective in space stage is to firstly unlock all the badges and stuff. u can find a list of everything in the bottom left. Secondly its to make it to the center of the galaxy. This is hard as the ENTIRE center belongs to the grox. They are a class 5 race so will hurt u hard. and literally own thousands of systems.
They however are fairly easy to kill and take space from if u have 6 class 5 race allies. they ALWAYS are inhabiting t0 planets and the simplest way to beat them is to stock up on 100 meteor showers and asteroid call terraforming tools. They cant survive on anything but t0 and 1 asteroid + 1 meteor is all but enough to bring any t0 they have into T1 and thus KILL THEM on that world.
REAL SPOILERS At the center of the galaxy is a massive black hole. U will enter it and find STEVE he is a little pink flying saucer with 4 little landing legs and a old fashion trombone like thing on its top. He supposedly is the ultimate being according to some and a robot left behind by humanity according to others.
He will give u a speech about universal life. Following this he will tell u to pop in if your in the neighborhood of the 3rd rock from the sol star. And as a reward for your effort you will get the rod of life. It basically is the ultimate Terra forming tool and changes ANY world into a t3 paradise. It has 43 uses so use it wisely.
Final notes: There are 3 ? mark weapon slot i have not unlocked yet. Rumor has it amongst other things there is a supernova weapon.
WARNING: The planet buster is not a popular weapon . using it will make EVER race around the location of its use VERY angry at u unless your in a alliance with them every 1 around its use area will declare war sighting galactic genocide or some such.
CHEAT: in game press Ctrl+shift+C this will bring up a cmnd window. Type: moremoney
Have fun all
