Blasterboats are broken since the HP buff patch 2 years ago.
Let me explain before I get flamed to ashes...
Blasterboat's combat doctrine is to kill before getting killed. It has a so called DPS tank; just like the falcon, which has an ECM tank, if the falcon can't jam it will die (at least it has some range advantage to get out), if the blasterboat cant overwhelm its target with DPS it will die as well.
Now the blasterboats used to be fit with a weak active tank and mediocre dmg (ion setup) or a passive tank and massive dmg output (neutron setup). The ion setup was good for small skirmishes and neutron setup for larger gang warfare. The blasterboat would go in overwhelm the target with DPS and kill it before it has to rely on its tank.
Sounds all uber but its not, blasters and blasterboats have a long list of disadvantages and weakness'. To list some:
- blasterboats use tons of cap and their setups usually rely on cap injectors to be stable, the natural cap recharge is just enough to run a full rack of its turrets, so point a neutralizer or 2 and its out of cap really fast.
- blasterboats are rather slow, especially if you are in large gang where you fit plates you have to count on the FC to get you in a good position otherwise ur either useless or dead in the fight. It means any fight involving the blasterboat having to chase its target around will end with the blasterboat caping out or being forced to warp out.
- Blasters have a really short range, and despite having a good tracking value on its attribute sheet, even small amount of transversal motion will turn those hard hitting blaster shots into "missed" shots.
- B-boats dont have spare mids to use any ECM or ECCM so getting them jammed up is a rather easy task.
So whats broken and whats not?
Some advocating a gallente buff have it all wrong, a raven out ranging and neutralizing a mega does not indicate the mega is broken it means the raven is using its advantages against clear disadvantages of the mega, range and cap warfare.
OR an AC boat buzzing around a blasterboat preventing web range also wont indicate that blasterboats are broken.
OR a recon ship denying lock, cleaning its cap, or messing with its tracking is not broken either.
On the other hand a blasterboat on full gank mode getting in range of a heavily tanked ship and losing because it couldnt out DMG the target is broken. Blasters can be considered melee weapons and they should utterly destroy anything thats within that melee range.
The Fix:
Since the HP buff blasterboats have a hard time achieving their designated role as close up and personal annihilators, basically its not worth the risk and efford to fly a blasterboat, getting ur self killed before doing any serious harm. Blasterboats should get their DMG bonus increased by a large margin and blasters should get a slight increase in tracking to compensate the up comming web efficiency nerf. Only giving the huge dmg bonus to gallente blasterboats (maybe even only applied to blasters so there wont be uber railgun boats) will prevent caldari blasterboats to turn into the new pulse boats and the tracking buff will benefit both races' boats.
Small Note: It's the HP buff patch that broke the minmatar artillery boats... I cant be bothered with the maths or any graphs right now but there used to be a sweetspot with Alpha dmg arties at around 20secs into the fight where they do more dmg than high dps pulse lasers, allowing hit and run tactics for minmatar; with the HP buff that sweetspot is useless since ships now have tons more EHPs and wont die against a high Alpha strike.
