I mean come on, its the 240th century, and the fastest ships without MWDs go like 1km/s??! WHATT? 1km/s is around 3600km/h... You do know we have fighter jets now that go faster then that?!!! Ships should be faster! ................. |

This entire discussion is kinda sad... You know, we dont even fly in space in a regular basis..
The spaceshuttle does not have an nuclear reactor indide, It doesent hold thousands of people (crew) and can certenly not shoot with rails over 100km in space... Now... What where you saying about "real"??
Its a GAME Its all MADE UP

Edited by: Kuggington on 13/06/2004 03:09:08 I agree that ships go much too slow in normal flight, although I also agree that there speed should not be close to an AU/s. The speed of sound in air is ~340 m/s, its 0 m/s in space, and most ships in EVE can not even reach this speed without ABs or MWDs. Spaceships should be able to go many times the speed of sound, just as a reference point, not a fraction of it. Not that it ever happens in EVE, but if a warp drive went out you wouldn't want to travel to a station from deep space traveling a mere 180 m/s would you?

Edited by: Tatsue Nuko on 13/06/2004 02:07:29 Well, it's all about playability, I believe. Controlling double-MWD'd frigs going at 25 km/s is hard enough, try controlling a chunk of battleship going at 250km/s...
PErsonally, I'm more annoyed with the fact that the engines on many ships are placed in such a way that the ships really should be spinning. =)
EDIT: Oh, and Kunnington, doing close to an AU/second is physically impossible on normal drives, since that would be 8 light minutes per second. You need to have a warp effect to even have a theoretical possibility of achieving that "speed". (Though, the actual matter of the ship never goes close to that speed, it's just the "warp bubble" around it that does so.)

Also if ships went 10's thousands of km/s, it would be impossible to do combat. The target would be gone by the time you decided to respond.

That was actually a typo which is now corrected, I meant to say "I also agree that there speed should not be close to an AU/s." I dont think they should be going thousands or ever hundreds of km/s, but like Cruz said space shuttles travel at 7km/s, which is to keep them in orbit, so I think that ships should be able to travel at a speed close to this.

This is correct, the warp bubble around your ship moves space, not you. This also applys to the MWD, only the unit is on a much smaller scale, thus you do not rech light speed. The only catch to this teory is the ship must still be in motion using its impulse drive while in warp, and it must be moving at a speed close to lightspeed. The ship itself never exceeds this speed itself, that is impossible. Insted it warps the space around it. Thus CCP have tweaked the theory a bit. If you still dont understand this think of it this way: Lets say the speed of light is 100 km/h. Your car can never reach this speed becuase of a theoretical bearier (I know my spelling is off but it is late, bear with me) But we can bend the rules, if we pull the road past us we cant relativly increse our speed though we really haven't. There, a quick little lecture on warp drives.

Edited by: Kuggington on 13/06/2004 03:23:58 It's actually 300,000 km/s and I have read that article on warp travel, but it doesn't change my view that ships should move faster. I suppose it has to do with the scale of the places we are in and the entire scale of the game would have to be changed, 15km warp to 150km+, but its just the idea of a spaceship traveling so slowly.

Originally by: Cruz Well consider the fact that our modern day space shuttle goes 7km/s...
Actualy the shuttle it self doesn't really move all that fast, they have to make use of the gravity well of the earth to sling shot itself, which is why there are intricate flight plans and crucial engine burn times, fire engines to soon or too late and you mis your critical point in an orbit to throw you in the right direction then bye bye baby cuase you they don't have enough fuel to turn around and come back. If the shuttle was to try and get to the moon on engines alone with out the sling shot from earths gravity well it'd probably take about a year, or at least a couple of months.
So the fact hips in game can even turn around and accelerate to the speeds they do is Amazing.

We could have ships flying around at 100km/s but battles wouldn't be easy b/c you'd see your opponent for about 1/2 of a second.
This gets debated in the forums from time to time going all the way back into beta... The conclusion tends to be that this is a game, and that "realism" has to end at some point for the sake of playability ;-).

Its just a number. If it'll make you feel better, tape a little piece of paper with 6 zeros on it to your monitor next to your speed display.
Unless you actually want the devs to make it so all ships are in view for only a microsecond then 10 grids away.

Edited by: Ryco on 13/06/2004 06:35:44 I dont think reality fits in here at all.
First off, throwing humans in a ship means g-force needs to be taken into consideration. Accelleration in this game is almost instantaneous. If this were real life you would be a red spot inside your ship accelerating at that rate.
Then there is the issue just about no resistance in space. Meaning that once my engines are on I should continue to accelerate indefinitely(without breaking the light bearer). Yet that is not the case. Every ship in game has a fixed velocity.
If you want realism then realisticly you wouldnt be able to turn on a dime. You would have to spend several seconds or minutes slowing down to make turns, or make very large radius turns in order to counteract the gs. And combat would also be nothing like it is now. In a real space battle both sides would remain 100s of kilometers apart and toss 10s of thousands of drones at eachother.
So where does that leave us? That leave us with having to accept the fact that in order to play the way we want to we cant be anything like real space. So it is irrelevant if top speed is 1,000,000km/s or 1. Its all relative.

faster than light travel is possible if you get around some details.
One way to go faster than light is to make the light slower! Light in vacuum travels at a speed c which is a universal constant but in a dense medium such as water or glass, light slows down to c/n where n is the refractive index of the medium (1.0003 for air, 1.4 for water). It is possible for particles to travel through air or water at faster than the speed of light in the medium. Cherenkov radiation is produced as an effect. In this way it is possible to cheat light.
Also you are ignoring the original warp drive concept. a warp drive WARPS space time. problem with that id you would need a negative energy substance of some sort.
Much of physics is in the dark we still have no clue how gravity fits into the Grand Unified Field Theory and thus without knowing how even that works we cant even begin to say that particles are other systems dont excede the speed of light.
There are ways of getting around it as you all should know. matter cant travel past the speed of light in a normal circumstance because then relativity kicks in and you cant excede that speed. However the dual reaction of space-time as a force and an planar field allows it to go faster than light as it is a universal medium. Warping space time allows faster than light without an issue.
I can get even more in depth but people will start pointing fingers. And please dont bring up Tachyonic fields and particles, they are general fiction at present.
just next time, please think before you say something isnt possible.

Id like to see frig cruiser base speed increased about 15%, and cruisers rasied about 20% or so. Would make non-interceptors and in particular the rather functionally bland cruisers more appealing.
Oh, and BTW while we do now have jets and stuff that fly real fast, remember that when they start dogfighting and such they slow down a lot. Sort of like in warp vs. not in warp, really... _________________ [SAK] And Proud Of It! aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base? |

Not sure of the math, but I think any changes in combat (ship orbiting foe speed) would require at least an equal change in all weapon tracking speeds. Which sounds like a lot of work - and a pretty major change.

i think all ships in the game move too slow. 500mph for a cruiser? give me a break.
general speed I would like to see for all ships.
interceptors 1500m/s frigates 1000m/s cruisers 500m/s battleships 200m/s
forget MWDs. I think they're stupid all together.. only reason people like them so much are because they're ships are so damn slow the start with. 500m/s for an interceptor and 200m/s for a battleship? not enough of a difference. People NEED to use MWDs in their frigates and interceptors to make them act like they're suppose to. ________

Now personally not all of us have reactions of jetfighter pilots and speeds that 1st would be kinda pointless. If Eve was a twitch control low-latency space-combat sim. Fair enough have speeds of that. But is there really a point of screeming across an asteroid belt in 1/2 sec.
Also these speeds could be relative to the objects around you. The station would be doing 7km/s so ur approaching it as 7.4km/s the difference is 400m/s.
But then again the true speed ur doing is stupidly huge. Lets say you in-orbit with a moon doing 7km/s the moon is in orbit with a planet doing 15km/s in orbit of a planet doing 300km/s in-orbit of a star thats moving in the galaxy doing 1000km/s in a galaxy that is moving with the rest of the universe doing 10000km/s.
Most of the figures are pulled of my head, but inless u want ur "true" speed in expontials e.g. 7.2x10^23m/s i would stop complaining about slow ship speeds because you are actually going very fast.
