With my limited skills on this new character I think this is a pretty good setup, it can shield tank reasonably well (even level 2 Blockade) but the larger ships (Cruisers and up) take forever to destroy. Any ideas, other than skills, which I'm working on, how I can increase my DPS (currently listed as 63, 492 per volley, in EFT)?

The only way you get more DPS is upgrading your launchers or your damage mods.
T2 ballistic controls, and heavy missile launchers specifically. You'll kill cruisers faster, and frigates slower... but not _much_ slower, because you're hitting less hard, but with more damage to start with. -- Crane needs more grid 249km locking? |

Thanks for the quick reply.
I was under the impression that using Heavies against Frigs was a no-no as they move too fast for the explosions to hit them?
I guess I could give them a go when I get the skills to fit them, coz with this setup I hardly have any room to fit anything else. Bear in mind this character is about a week old. ;)

He paid for it. Let him fly it-if it gets blown up your not paying the bill. It is no different from a character of 3 months old flying a battleship.

I fly a carac with a very similar med&low loadout for lvl2s and I agree with one of the above posters that a heavy launcher or two with some scourge will increase your damage to cruisers much more than the incurred loss of damage dealing to frigates. Usually I dontmixguns but on the carac I find 3x assault 2x heavy is fine for lvl2s. plus, for those *very* annoying mish where the frigs are 70km away, the range on the heavy means you can fire off a couple of heavies to aggres the npcs then wait for them to fly into range of your assaults for some ownage.
Obviously this would pop posthaste in pvp.

With two weeks worth of skills, the OP has the optimum level 2 mission fit for the Caracal. There may be some missions where you struggle to damage Cruiser-class NPC's fast enough with Standard missiles, but overall, this fit will maximize your ability to do all missions without needing to swap out missiles and launchers. As his missile skills improve, the DPS will follow, especially when he moves into T2 BCS and AML's. I run a 5XT2 AML setup on my Caracal and usually 2-3 volley a Cruiser class npc. To the OP, this is the best setup. Just train your skills to get to the T2 BCS and standard missiles Lvl 5 and you'll be fine.

Why not? It's bigger and stronger than a Frigate and allows me to move into level 2's easier.

I created this char intentionally to get into a Cruiser as soon as possible. It's not my first char, I've been playing the game for years, but never Caldari with missiles (hence the questions). My other chars are Gallente and Ammar with over 5m SP each, not a lot I know, but I have only played on and off and have tried out many alts.

As said above, I'm not a new player, this is a new char. I have enough ISK to dispose of so my choice of ship is not your concern.

That's what I wanted to hear, thank you. I'll keep increasing the needed skills to fit the T2 equipment as soon as I can. Apart from rigs and skills I couldn't think of any other way to boost my DPS on a missile boat.

You're setup is fine, don't care about what the others say. Work on your shield skills for survivability and mix it with some missile skills...
Also a tips: Train learning skills whenever you are offline, and the others when online for variety :) ------------

Nice tip. But I create objectives and plan my ships in advance using EFT and then plan what skills are needed in EVEMon which then tells me which Learning skills to use to reduce training time as and when needed.

You could load faction bloodclaws just for the odd cruiser since there are so few in level 2's, otherwise your fit is perfect. Ignore the brick pilots with their HML nonsense. Focus purely on missile and weapons upgrade skills since damage is king.

I don't understand all the hostility towards what type of ship I choose to pilot, it's my choice and has nothing to do with you or anyone else.
And I'm not going to be stupid enough to try and fly a BS with such low skills, the only reason I'm flying a Caracal is because using Assaults with Light Missiles takes no more skills than a new player gets anyway.

The setup your using isn't all the bad tbh... What you need to look into: Standard missiles = Damage Rapid Launch = ROF Warhead Upgrades = Damage Missile launcher ops = ROF
Weapon Upgrades 4 = BCU II's
Then with cybernetics 3 you can use the 3% damage/ROF/ect... implants
shield upgrades 4 = tech 2 large extenders (and passive tech2 amps)
If you get standard missiles to 5 you can also use the tech 2 launchers and the spec skill will decrease launch time (ROF)
Also you can add change your setup a little and go with 3x heavy launchers/2x assault launchers or 5 heavies and (target nav pred I think... the one that requires launchers ops 5) 2x extenders, AB, 1x passive hard and a target painter 2x BCU's

man its the character more then anything, you are simply to young a character to be flying this efficiently and would be better off in a frigate tbh, your skills wont let you fit heavies, the won't improve your damage with assaults and you probably can't afford to rig it either. Don't worry to much about it just level ur skills up and you will will find the lvl 2 missions a breaze as well as finding the transition thereafter from level 2-3 will be incredibly easy because you will almost have the skills for a Drake

well guys would you please stop ****zling around with the "he's too young to fly it" argument?
It might not be incredibly awesome but I got 3.3 mil SP, flying a 434 DPS rokh and McLoViN' it.
The thing is simply to maximize your training, get the skills that give you the best improvement/time first, right after you have finished your learning skills.
It might not be the best caracal EVER 2 week after the char creation but it'll do the job real good, Hell, I was in my caracal 5 days or so after my char creation flinging some HML's at L1 npc to get my standing up to do some L2's.
If you want some numbers or explanation ask me, I'll be more than pleased to give you pointers on how to have the most fun out off the boring start, make good cash AND have an efficient skill training plan.
You don't need to wait until you have maxed out skill to fly a ship, the GOAL is to have FUN, and to be effective, he got a great setup to do lil L2's, get some monay, find a chicks, buy a house etc...
I preferred my HML setup,, I'm more of a sniper but that's your thing :P If you want my ex-setup leave me a message in game, it even made a couple of l3's while I was waiting for some 1ncr3d1bl3 skills to finish.

Pretty much perfect for level II missions. All you could really do to improve it is increase your skills.
In theory you could add 2 drones, but I doubt you'll actually need them.

That setup is basically perfect for level 2's. If missile rigs are cheap you can add a damage and a rate of fire one if it fits. Beyond that it's pretty much skills and upgrading your bcs's, I know the best named ones are silly expensive, but the lower named ones should give you a bit more bang for your buck.
Also, to all the haters; go and play with the character creation thing, you can very nearly fly any cruiser out of the box these days and a caracal set up like that is probably the least skill intensive one you aim for.

What I'm currently flying has a more shield/armour/structure, more med's for shield extenders/hardeners and more hi's for more missile launchers than Frigates. I'm using AML's and Standard Missiles which require basic skills almost all Caldari chars get when starting out. Therefore I'm doing missions much quicker (and therefore more efficiently) than a Frigate, so how would I be better off in a Frigate? In some level 2's a Frig would get wasted without a decent setup that I probably couldn't fit due to lacking skills...
The whole purpose of this thread was to see if there was any setup that would give better DPS as that is all I'm lacking at the moment, and I know that will mostly come with skills which I am currently learning, so please, keep your comments/opinions of what ship I should fly to yourself, thank you.

I'll agree that your setup is more or less optimal for your current situation - and also that it's not ridiculous to be in a cruiser at this stage (to the guy who said you'd be better off in a frigate, I'd be intrigued to see how he'd get more light missile damage than 5 bonused assault launchers, or anything remotely resembling the tank, out of a frigate). If you were limping through level 1s in a poorly-fitted Caracal things would be different, but this is a decent fit and using a cruiser for level 2 missions is exactly as intended.
My only suggestion would be to use some named BCS if you have the CPU to spare (weapons upgrades are odd in that named versions use more CPU). They can be pretty pricy at the top end, but even cross-linked or muon coil would increase your DPS a bit. If you haven't got the spare CPU but can afford to upgrade, chances are that training one further level of Engineering will give you what you need, and depending on what your current level is might not take too long at all.

I have the CPU to fit 2 x Pandemoniums if I want to, but spending so much money on such a small increase to DPS is quite hard for me... Don't get me wrong, I have the ISK, after all it's just sitting there but what if something happens and I loose it, it's a lot of ISK to replace. Anyhow, I worked out the below:
2 x Cross-linked Bolt Array's give a 3.1% DPS increase for 1.4m 2 x Muon Coil Bolt Array's give a 6.3% DPS increase for 4.4m 2 x Multiphasic Bolt Array's give a 7.9% DPS increase for 12m 2 x 'Pandemonium' I Ballistic Enhancement's give a 11.1% DPS increase for 40m
I guess Muon Coil's won't be too expensive for the increase it gives compared to Multi's and Pandemoniums...

In which case definitely aim for Weapons Upgrades IV as a priority. T2 BCS are cheap (under 1m each) and give a better bonus than even Pandemonia. And since you're flying Caldari ships, it's much more of a priority than on other ships (I'm sure named BCS' are much more expensive than named damage mods for the other weapons systems) - the skill is rank 2 so taking it to level 4 shouldn't take more than 2-3 days.
