If you want to PvP in the thorax dont let yourself get disencouraged by people saying you need more skills for it. The thorax is an excellent lowskill PvP cruiser. If you have drones lvl5 you are better off in a vexor tho.
but to come to a cheap and effective thorax fitting for the lower skilled:
5x Medium Ions T1 1x MWD 1x point 1x web 2x Mag Stab 1x 800mm plate 1x reactor control 1x small armor rep
I used to have a damage control in the slot of the small armor rep but I figured out/got convinced that a small armor repair is better used in there.
If you are low on skills you are not going to kill anything else then even bigger noobs then yourself. You just kill your nooby opponent and gtfo. The armor repper will make sure you dont have to dock up to repair your ship if you got global criminal.
The thorax is an excellent ship if fitted correctly. Skills mean f-all if you're just using T1 anyways.
If 3/4 of the people have read the thread in the wrong way and you're asking for a setup just to kill belt rats, then just get a vexor since they are much better at that. ----

Switch the ECM drones for explosive drones for defense/gangs.
To add to that in a gang if there is a chance of you getting remote rep drop a MFS for an EANM II in that setup. It will make the remote repping much more efficient. -- I'm done whining about AFs, it looks like they are making them right \o/ |

'Big Plate/Small Gun' Thorax fits were very popular and successful before the HP buff we saw last year. Their DPS was low, but it was still enough to chew through most targets before they could get through your plate. Now that everything has higher EHP, you really need the damage bonus to medium guns, even if you're packing Electrons, to be viable.
Also, if you're relying mainly on your drones for damage, you're flying the wrong ship. Thorax drone DPS is nothing to sneeze at to be sure, but there are much better drone boats out there. -------------------- "I am hard pressed on my right; my centre is giving way; situation excellent; I am attacking." - Ferdinand Foch at the Battle of the Marne |

Never been killed by a vexor either ;)
I stand by the setup i quoted (as well as the other Small blaster setup posted). Even after the HP buff.

Wrong.
Let's compare two similar builds: both with 1600mm plates, one with 2x MFS, an RCU II, and 5x Heavy Electrons IIs, and one with 3x MFS and 5x Light Neutrons IIs. All other modules (DCU, mids, drones) will be identical so they'll handle the same and have the same EHP. Incidently, I've flown both of these exact setups although I now prefer a gankier fit that lacks a plate.
EFT DPS (assuming my skills, CN AM Ammo) Light Neutrons: 270 Heavy Electrons: 348
Range Light Neutrons: 1080+3000 Heavy Electrons: 1440+3600
Tracking Light Neutrons: 0.3798 Heavy Electrons: 0.1440
Cap Usage (guns only) Light Neutrons: ~4 Heavy Electrons: ~6
The Heavy Electron fit has a distinct edge in terms of DPS and range. Against frigate-sized targets, the higher tracking on the Light Neutrons comes into play, but there is such a big difference in the raw DPS that it won't help you out enough as long as you keep your target webbed. The Light Neutron fit also uses less cap, but both fits are easily cap stable with a point, web, and guns running.
The only time that Light Neutrons will win out over Heavy Electrons is if you're building a fit without a web; in that situation, the extra tracking really saves you. But I'm not sure why anyone would ever fit a blaster-boat without a web.
So maybe saying that the Light Neutron fit 'wasn't viable' was a bit much, but a Heavy Electron fit does tend to out-perform it both according to EFT and my personal experience. -------------------- "I am hard pressed on my right; my centre is giving way; situation excellent; I am attacking." - Ferdinand Foch at the Battle of the Marne |

No, it really wasn't a bit much, because a light neutron fit really is not viable - at least not against a competent opponent. Flying a Thorax and relying on drones for DPS is a major paradox, and also not a good idea.
T2 mediums / tackle / buffer / magstabs, and ECM drones.
That is all.
