So I'm new to this game, have only had my account for 1 month and twenty-something days, and today i started an alt just for fun, of course i tried to start a skill immediatly to get going, and was greeted with a message saying that i was already training a skill on a character on this account. So bassically it is only possible to learn a skill on 1 character at a time, even though you can have multiple chars per account.
Maybe I just cant see it, but I really see absolutely no point in creating an alt on the same account since anything i can learn and do on the alt, I can learn on my main. Only difference is that my main is already way ahead skillpoint-wise.
To me it just seem like a method for CCP to get people to start a second account, heck they even have special offers for starting a second account.
But yeah am I correct in saying that more than 1 character per account is pointless? Or am i missing something?

People use alts to spy on corps, or suicide with their alts so the security hit doesn't fall on their main. But yeah its more useful to have a second account.

If you ever have more than 1 account and have to close the second account you can transfer character to your first account instead of just closing it down and not being able to use the char ever.

There's no point in having a second main on the same account. But a specialized alt can take only a few months to train.

I use a production alt to double my Factory slots so i'm not tying up the 11 on my main with basic equipement, when they are better used for mods and ships that took alot of skills to train for on my main.
I use my 3rd slot for a market alt so i can scout prices in a different region, and make my contract purches that require the buyer to be in the same region as the contract.
With the ability to buy characters n the forums alot of pilots now have 2nd or 3rd mains, usually as spy alts in alliances theyre paraniod about.
Other alt varients commonly used are Hualing alts, gate camp scouts, Cyno alts, forum posting alts, and the ever present Smak talk alt.
With the ability to start off with close to 1mil sp on a New char the possibilities for low sp alts that are actually usefull is endless, You can even get a Tech II frig pilot up and running on a couple of weeks now, perfect for experiencing Faction Warfare.
IMHO Being able to train 1 character at a time is only a disadvatage if you think of SP as a form of ingame 'rank' or status symbol.

Hmm not necessarily. What about a player with a combat specialised character who decides to buy a character with lots of skills in mining or invention or some other ISK-making speciality?

right, your sp number actully means nothing in eve so there is no reason to train combat and mining skills on the same character. none what so ever.

Go back to WoW (someone had to say it )
Just like anyother MMO, you can only play the game and "raise your level" with one character per account. Just like WoW (yes I said it) You can have multipul characters per account but can only play and level 1 at a time. Just like EvE if your character is training it is effectivaly "Playing" the game.

In a way it is but don't forget the big advantage that how effiecient your char is in EVE doesn't matter so much on how many hours you play.
I've had 2 accounts from the start 1 for pvp and 1 production / science alt / PVE. Both are at 14 million skillpoints and between the 2 I can do more then I could have with only 1 account. So yes it stimulates to have more accounts. Good move by CCP.

There are plenty of reasons really. Good example is a pirate who can no longer enter hi sec needing a hauler alt. Trade alts who come with a whole load ofslots are good too. Then there are all the useful alts who can be trained very quick and transfered into your mains slots. Trial -> one months subscription -> transfer char gives you 40 days training time for a one off fee, enough to make a couple of useful alts (cynos for me).

Lots of uses to be honest - my 2nd character started life as a character on my main account... I bought the 2nd account to "train him for a few months". The 2nd account is still active and he's STILL training
Uses for 2nd and 3rd slots: Factory Tenders (able to build T1 items and run a few factory slots so your main builder doesn't need to), Market Scouts (sat in a different region to save on travel - RP justification there is simply a "friend" or "family member" of your main if you need such a thing. PVP scouts, haulers, suicide alts (for when you absolutely MUST take that enemy high-sec newby corp scout out, for example - just don't recycle, that's an exploit) or maybe you've grinded a few missions at level 1 and 2 with just enough skill training that you can now recycle better than your main at certain stations.
All are perfectly valid uses for alts... of course you'll also see shadier versions, such as scamming alts, ore thieves and salvage raiders, but those tend to be slightly less common that those I listed above.
If you can afford it, I strongly recommend a 2nd account... it makes for much more use than just one and allows parallel skill training. If you do so, put your market/builder etc alts on the opposite account to an industrial character and your scouts/hauler on the opposite account to a PVP or mission-runner character - this allows you to make the most of your alts and avoid having to use contracts to transfer goods for sale/hauling/fitting if you're in the same system.
Some people have called for just one character per account - personally I think the alts help make EVE a more colourful place and increases the variety of ships/cargos being hauled by a large factor.

you can get some really good alts on creation, the trade alt is a particularly good one as you can let them do your buying and selling.
simple alt haulers can be generated in a few hours, either the matari or amarr one can get you moving aa BC / CS hull in a few days.
generally alts on the same account are good for the stuff like building, buy orders, etc. where you don't need to be on to help it.
and we all know it's fun to read noob corp chat for a few minutes before your eyes start to bleed.

Totally disagree, training a hauler to buy shit for you in empire or run level 1 or 2 missions for fun takes no time. Trade alts take no time. Noob pirate/FW alts that you feed with your main take no time. If you're living in empire, do yourself a HUGE favor, make that sweet minmitar alt that you've wanted since you started and feed it a little bit of isk for t1 pvp, you'll learn a lot.

If you have a problem counting decimal places the other great thing an alt can do is hold your trillions, Leaving your main with 'pocket money'. No more problems buying 23 million isk shuttles or sending someone 10 billion instead of 1 when your drunk

Which is good. Just look at Dark age of Camelot where players are constantly whining that they need more character slots. (Must be because the carebears' main goal in that game is to fill up their character slots and then whine about having not enough character slots)

i buy an extra account for a bit, train up a char to do X (haul, mine, fly amarr, whatever), then sell it to one of my main accounts and close the extra one
so then if i can't play but feel like leaving an ice miner running during MST3k, i'll log in that char and go punch rocks for a few hours Please resize image to a maximum of 400 x 120, not exceeding 24000 bytes. If you would like further details please mail [email protected] - Saint |

Not really. Low level alts are useful for running gates and for price checks in other regions, where you don't have a corp-mate.
It's also nice to save the second (or third, or fifth) account money once you have your "alt" where you need them to be. For example, you have a fighter pilot main - it's easy to see that once you have about 20 million points into your mining alt you really don't need to train that character ever again. Why pay for the training? Many players have fighter pilots who specialize in Cov-Ops or Force Recon. Once you get your 20-30 million SP for that why keep training? Just move them to your Industrialist main.
In General ( I'll wait for the nit-pickers to flame this ) you're rarely using more than 20-30 million SP at any one time, probably a lot less. I'll grant you there are times when you need to run two accounts, but the question is, is it worth the price? I grew up my fighter pilot alt to 24 million SP and he works just fine like that for the corp role he plays. Once I got him there I move him to the Industrial account. Once you get a Hulk up to 24,000 m^3 a hauler becomes less of a requirement, so I didn't feel it was worth the money to keep the fighter on a third account just to drive an Iteron 4 times a night to save me 8 minutes total time.
Of course, to each their own.

I've the alts on this char employed on a couple of activities only with starting skills + very few others: one trader and one corp manager.
The 800k SP are indeed very usefull if you know what you want and the SP packs each char carries. ---
