Edited by: Verena Intrefer on 18/09/2008 17:36:34 As most people with freighters probably have realized, it's more than a little hassle to keep loads of small stuff organized without the ability to use anything smaller than 120k m¦ to divide the hold.
So, why not add a special container that holds assembled containers but negates the cargo bonus by having larger volume than capacity?
Container rack - small
- This transportation container is primarily intended for organizing and securing smaller containers within the hold of a freighter. It is equipped with automated retrieval systems and Planck field stabilizers, which reduces its internal capacity.
- Capacity: 30,000 m¦
- Volume: 39,000 m¦
Above that there could be versions that can hold 25 and maybe 50 Giant Secure Containers (of course they should be able to hold smaller cans as well as loose cargo for those who don't mind the penalty, but the GSC is a good measure of capacity). The smaller ones would be good to have keep in the hold for those who need to move a few cans now and then, and the larger ones for those who need to organize deliveries for lots of recipients.
Oh, and maybe someone can think up a better name. :)

I really like this idea also. I like to keep my stuff organized and let's say I have a freight load of products and then I also have a few small containers that have sets of blueprints in them for organization. I'd have to pull them out and repackage the cans if I plan to ship them.
I end up just coming back and transporting them with a regular hauler because I really don't want to have to reorganize it everytime I move some stuff around. It really annoys me.
The idea you have here is an EXCELLENT idea and I would love it very much if something like this came out. A great way to take care of the cargo bonus also.
2 thumbs up from me

I like the idea, but maybe a simpler solution would be to introduce a full line of "general freight" containers of various sizes with no bonus to cargo capacity. Maybe 120m3 (for blue prints, skill books, etc), 1,200m3, 12,000m3 and the standard 120,000m3. They could also be less expensive than packing a bunch of GSCs into your cargo hold.

I think the full line of general freight containers would increase can clutter even more. Having a special "meta-container" only at the freighter stage is probably what would keep the chain of logistics most streamlined. You can take stuff from station without having to get enough special containers first, and if you're gathering cargo from others you could just swap empty cans for loaded ones instead of repacking everything into the freighter cans.
One option could be to introduce huge and giant standard containers. I have a hunch that one of the reasons they were omitted a long time ago was to avoid making can-expansion too cheap, but I don't that would be much of an issue now.

Or you could just use currier contracts.

Oh yes, please, please, please give us that.
Not only will it help Freighter pilots (I'm one myself), but it will also be very convenient to have larger non-secure containers in hangars, to keep track of stuff.
I hate using station containers, because of all the password, locking, hassle-stuff going on with them. At least while I'm in an NPC corp. Maybe they work better when you're in a proper corp? But as long as I'm in an NPC corp, station containers are a total pain in the butt, and I've stopped using them completely (and not only that, but once you stop using a container, you have to wait like 3-4 weeks before you can disassemble and sell it. WTF is up with that???).
I don't care about volume compression. I'm in a station for crying out loud (even though in space no one can hear my cries). Or I'm piloting my Freighter.
All I care about is an easy, hassle-free way of keeping track of stuff.

Edited by: Karille on 19/09/2008 10:26:14 I think an expandable container would be the most worthwhile solution. Offering no capacity increase, just conforming to the size of whatever you put in it. Just something to use so you can keep things together without wasting space in your ship. If it could be used as a jetcan (ex: filled outside a ship) it would probably need a maximum amount that it could hold, but if it could be limited to exclude that purpose it wouldn't really need an upper limit.
Edit: Real world example: plastic wrap. We all love real world examples right? _________________________________________________________

This only works in stations. From station to station. The Plastic Wrap is a great idea, and something I've asked for a number of times (with no dev response in either direction). You can read what I suggested here (though it has been 90 locked)

Where else are you going to be docking a freighter ? At a POS ? The POS's current handling of freight containers mean they're useless, so one the same only smaller would be useless still.

I'd propose something different.
right click on the items -> wrap in plastic.
Voila. We already have plastic wraps ingame, and i use them a lot with my alt. Creating a courier contract for it is a bit meh, but it works. Now let's allow everyone to just wrap stuff in plastic whenever they want.

Actually, my wrapping idea was not just for freighters. It is useful to be able to group items, no matter what size ship you are flying. And part of my needs for this is so corp members can wrap up their ore donations from their own mining operations, to aid in tracking/record keeping/payouts. This is fine in station/outpost systems, as they can contract it to me, however, a lot of times, they are mining where we only have a POS. This makes it very difficult to track and keep individual donors seperate. The ability for them to wrap their ore up, and let me pick up the one, named, parcel, and keep it seperate form others until I get to the station to refine and payout, would be a HUGE improvement. (I don't like it when playing the game requires a pen and paper...) |

This would be quite handy. You can have a named container for each kill you have or each body you have and name the large container "Graveyard" May you feel the warmpth as my Missiles smash into your hull.
