The word "safespot" was used as early as for Pac-Man Arcades in the mid 80's, people found out that there were certain spots on the field where the ghosts simply couldnt find you for 18 minutes (until the ghost cycles switched and they turned around). This give you enough time to run away to the bathroom and/or fetching something to eat while trying to beat your highscore.
These are also commonly referred to as "sweetspots" or "hiding spots".

The term tanking has been used in a lot of mmorpgs, everquest for one...
Where your tank was a warrior who would take the beats from an npc while the wizards/mages dealt the damage.
