Edited by: Lee N on 17/06/2004 09:30:28 The word "safespot" was used as early as for Pac-Man Arcades in the mid 80's, people found out that there were certain spots on the field where the ghosts simply couldnt find you for 18 minutes (until the ghost cycles switched and they turned around). This give you enough time to run away to the bathroom and/or fetching something to eat while trying to beat your highscore.
These are also commonly referred to as "sweetspots" or "hiding spots".

They might sound like words youre used to from everyday life, but in EVE, browsing the gun info tells you absof***inglutely nothing useful about how your guns might be expected to perform.
I suppose its taken as a given that they just miss.

Oh, come now Sutty...
WhiteDwarf was instrumental in shaping this MMO into a more enjoyable persistent universe gaming experience. I bet every member of the DEV team has a portrait of WhiteDwarf on their desk, and scribings of all his posts carefully hand copied from one DEV to the next like the old Bible's were. No doubt the DEV's cherish these words, and live by them, and admire the man who once spoke them so vibrantly.
Although WhiteDwarf is no longer the man he once was due to a cloning mishap, he will never be forgotten. He was a hero to many, the guiding light for all of those who felt helplessly ganked, but most importantly, he was respected by all, even by his most hated enemies, ISD.
For you to use WhiteDwarf's name in vain like that Sutty is pure blasphemy!
May your brain explode in a horrible cloning accident some day Sutty! Setting you back to 0 skillpoints!
Have a nice day :)

Thats entirely the point of my rant. CCP have changed the terms so much that knowledge of the ballistic terms does not help you understand how the EVE guns are going to perform :. CCP have re-invented these words.
That is, if I happen to be familair with ballistics, and see ballistics terms being used I expect them to have the correct ballistics meanings. As it is CCP might as well give these terms totally invented names like THAC0 or "Frijildit Range" or something for all the similarity the CCP terms have to ballistics terms.

'End yourself' just gets on my goat. Never heard it before eve though.
podded CAN-CORD with reference to the new changes to cans
ninja mining is half new, it's come from a few games with ninja farming, ninja looting, ninja keeptakes etc
Devs - afaik that's a pretty new thing. Usually called staff/gm's/god.
Any acronym including kthxbye - old school used by people with less imagination than Father Dougal.
smacktalk - heard it in DAoC
fanboy - mostly SWG
IBTL - mostly DAoC (especially vnboards)
first! - SWG when it was in development. Believe it or not that actually completely turned me off the game.
forum warrior - many MMORPGS have these and it's indeed been coined before
EW Wars - new afaik
armor tanking/shield tanking - hard one this. On one hand DAoC had shield tanking but I don't think it had armor tanking. That was called resistance tanking which is about the same thing.
CTD - Definately not new.
Otters - Eve.
That's all I can think off the top of my head.

Most definitely not a new term - it's shorthand for "developers" ;)
When people use that term, they mean the people making the game. GMs are mere servants, mostly. Of course, a dev may also do some GM work. And both GMs and devs are gods :)

Hehe, maybe on the PVP servers, but on the Realm vs. Realm servers you couldn't talk to enemy players. But I suppose you could smacktalk people you dueled.

Ninja as in Ninja-Mining is not a new expression but an altered one, it appeared in Neocron were USA/EURO clans would use the time difference to take Outposts while the other was not there. Thus sneakily taking something has been called Ninja-*.* since before EVE.
Carebear IS NOT an EVE expression, its been on the go for ages.
Smack Talk is as old as the hills also
Rat Farming is only new in that Pirates or NPC's are called Rat's, the farming part's an old one from a number of onliners
Tanking, OMFG another Ancient one
Courier Missions and Mining have been used in such offliners as Elite 2 and other Elite clones that lead to the Evil Offspring of ALL Elite clones...EVE
AT THIS POINT I SAW VORAX's POST, as im typing as i read using 2 pages . And yeah he's right...
Patch Day, um see Everquest for the old patch day angst as you wait for hours on your only day off only to waste it as it takes the whole day to patch
Tenacha Khan, thanks for the history of the word Ganked. LMFAO now i found that simple yet funny, i never actually thought it was a constructed word
Harvestors, um should have mentioned this before but they've been resource gatherers in just about EVERY C&C product and various clones
Balance/Balancing, oh man have you NEVER played an onliner b4???? ALL onliners go through a rebalancing period now and then, see Neocron, or as it became called Tank-O-Cron after they mis-balanced the HELL out of it
JaiMaster, as i understand it in EVE, putting someone in a pod is called Canning because you reduce their ship to a Can and then killing their Pod is called Podding, but i guess its a dialect game thingy
Wow theres a WHOLE LOT of people who havent played enough online games to think EVE came up with SO much...
EVE is as far as i know the only game where you can Lag out and accidently kill someone rather than Lagging out and getting ganked in 99% of the rest
