Thanks for the continuing support guys. It's good to see my sig has lured some more people into this topic.
Links will come soon to more of my (non-eve-related) work.
I'm seriously considering the idea of making alliance-logo pendants on-demand, since I don't see how that could cause conflict with CCP. Contact me via evemail if you are interested, I might be swayed =). ______________

I recommend threading VERY lightly!
Last you want is getting letters from lawyers because youŠre making money out of CCP copyrighted intellectual property.
Nonetheless, your prototypes look awesome. YouŠll see how much of that enthusiasm survives once you calculate proper prices and they eventually appear in the CCP Store. With the obvious price markup so that CCP makes a buck out of it too.
20 bucks for a bloody T-shirt? Come on.
If you are really serious with this, then I recommend going personally to Fanfest and discuss this with one of the CCP Bosses. "Donating" some of your prototypes to them wouldnŠt be a bad idea either.

Hi,
Have you or people you know done anything with precious metal clay?
I don't have prior experience in jewelry making but I got it into my head that I wanted a Sisters of Eve pendant (art reference linkage). Somehow this bloomed into "I need a new hobby" and yesterday a package of starter tools and materials found its way onto my doorstep.
I realize a bit late that I didn't order enough silver clay to do the SoE pendant so I'll have to try a coupple starter projects first. I'd be interested in hearing tips if you've got any.
Also, because I saw other people talking about the colors I thought I'd mention liver of sulfur patina that I've read about in the references I got. Depending on how heavy you go with it you can get tones from gold (Ammar) to red-maroon (Minmatar) to blues, purple and black.

Originally by: Fink Angel Edited by: Fink Angel on 25/09/2008 07:04:33 To the OP ... persevere with contacting CCP if you want permission to do this properly and get them into the CCP shop. In fact, try contacting White Wolf's marketing people too. It would help to come up with some business like things like cost per unit, but I'm sure they'll let you know what they need to know if they think the idea to make and sell them is sound.
A good few years ago over a pub lunch I talked to Nick Sainton-Clark (the guy who made the Eve ship models) about the feasibility of him looking at doing Eve models as I thought there might be a market for him.
I think it took around the two year mark from him making contact, to the models being available in the shop.
This description matches my experience, although I would not advise talking to White-Wolf; they were a complete and utter waste of time.
I'd buy the silver cast ship model - that was cool and unique. The logos however used to be available in the EVE store as keychains in a cheap metal. (Haven't seen them for a few years in the store)

That's pretty cool. But if you have such skills. Why not take a ship... say Dominix and design it such that when its all done it's like a 12" replica of a dominix all in metal?
That would be epic. I wish I wasnt such a nerd and could do such things. Erm to apply to nerdy things. I guess it's a bit of a double edged sword. *sigh*

ok, since there's been a few responses again, I'll take this post to address them all.
First off, I've had some experience with precious metal clay. For someone who is not familiar with working in metal, it is an excellent way to easily make a cool piece of craft jewellery (at quite a price). For a metalworker, however, it was pretty boring, and didn't react the way I expected it to. That being said, there are plenty of interesting applications for it that are not possible with other forms of metal.
For (I think) the third time, the pendants pictured are NOT in my possession, they are either lost in the international parcel service, or somewhere at CCP's HQ in Iceland. I have treaded very lightly so far, and have not/do not plan to sell any of CCP's intellectual property.
Pricing schemes I have worked out, which leave room for retail markup. As far as quantity goes, I can churn out as many as my fingers will let me, and in theory could hire help for some parts of the process to save time. However, as a self-employed artist, it's hard to start from anywhere but the very bottom.
I too was severely disappointed with the "Cheap trashy laser etched tin medallions" that appeared on the front page. From a business point of view, however, I was hardly surprised. It is definitely sweeter to the bottom line when you eliminate any kind of hand-work or craftmanship.
Jason: as for ships, I would love to do any custom ship design, but making actual models is not quite so practical for the medium. It would require far more work than the majority would be willing to pay for. All my work is hand-fabricated, which means no casting or wax prototypes. I work in the metal itself, not in wax =).
Faraelle: Very prophetic comment there, since Liver of sulphur is exactly the patina I used on those pendants and use regularly. The colouration is extremely dependent on a number of factors, so it can only be partially controlled (I can stop when I reach the desired colour heh).
That's all for now, except for the Iceland thing.
I would absolutely love to go to fanfest, and it would be a great way to make sure this is finally brought to CCP's attention. Since I'm not sure if they even received the pendants at all, it's hard to judge.
Unfortunately, I have to stress this point again. I am a self-employed artist with very little income. I have a decent clientele in my city, and am looking forward to an excellent holiday season sales-wise, but I am still looking to expand my market. That being said, a trip to Iceland is very low on my list financially.
Thanks again for all your replies, I look forward to talking more with some of you, and as I said, I will update soon with pictures of new (non-EVE-related) work. ______________

Ahkay, I'm not too surprised. :D Do you have/know tricks for getting it selectively onto a part of a piece? I see you've done that some by polishing it back; my idea is to put a thin layer of oil or such on the parts I want to stay silver before dipping it.

Talk about hiring help why not out source to a firm that can cast your artwork on large scale.
I found this place when I was researching maybe getting my pulse jet engine prototyped and then cast in stainless or titanium.

Also heres a video they have on thier site.

Quick wuestion, how did you declare the package before you shipped it? Likelyhood is your package never made it due to customs. just a thought, But I dont see CCP paying to recieve a package when they have no idea what it is, who its from and why it was sent. Just some things to think about.
I bought a CD from some dude in New Zealand and it was taken and it took me almost a year to get a hold of the guy that sent it to tell him i never got it. His spam filter for his email is a harsh bit of programing. He said the customs must have taken it, said hed send another one but i never got it either. luckily for me he had the stuff online and gave me a username and password to access it and download the stuff. Was his book about pulsejet engines.

Edited by: Lex Alandar on 16/10/2008 04:02:41 Edited by: Lex Alandar on 16/10/2008 04:01:12 Well, I promised more pictures so those first, then I'll respond to a couple posts.
"Arrowhead Gascraft"
"Empty Eye ring"
"Runic guitar pick"
"Triangle guitar pick"
"Living Ring"
"Talon Pendant"
"G7 tree pendant"
"Two as one tree pendant"
Now, Faraelle, about the Liver of Sulfur... I'm told, although I haven't tried it, that you can use a small paintbrush to apply the patina. Several applications might be necessary, washing in between, and I would personally recommend heating the piece in hot water before applying the patina, for more vivid results.
Onto the idea of mass production and machine-manufacturing processes. Some people argue that it is more efficient and economical to use machines to automate processes that may take a human being more time and effort, with less-than-perfect results. Those people are missing the point when it comes to art, which is that human processes, and human time can do things no machine can, most importantly so-called 'imperfections'.
So it may be a sound 'business decision' to hire out to a company to mass-produce something; it is, however, a suicidal proposition from any 'maker of things'. If I were to go to CCP saying "Hey, I can take these designs of yours and send them to this company, and they'll make stuff you can buy and markup in your shop" they would smile and tell me to get lost.
What I chose to do was instead present my work as the selling point. It is not stamped out from a machine, or cast from a wax original. It is made from plate silver with hammer, saw and file. Many people appreciate this, and they are my customers.
Admittedly, the prototype pieces, letter, and email are likely lost in the limbo of customs, international parcel post, and junk mail folders respectively. I had hoped at least to have some public response, which has been fantastic.
I plan to have a website up soon, and will investigate the possibility of online commerce when doing so. It is truly gratifying to know that people around the world can relate to my work, so thanks for your kind responses. As always, questions are welcome..
