As this is the premier wool to pull over someones eyes, land ownership I was thinking, who is it that owns the most land? Anyone have a name?
I got a hunch it's Putin.

Edited by: Captain Hudson on 22/09/2008 23:36:28 Queen Elizabeth II, head of state of the United Kingdom and of 31 other states and territories, is the legal owner of about 6,600 million acres of land, one sixth of the earthÆs non ocean surface.
She is the only person on earth who owns whole countries, and who owns countries that are not her own domestic territory. This land ownership is separate from her role as head of state and is different from other monarchies where no such claim is made û Norway, Belgium, Denmark etc.
The next largest landowner is the Russian state, with an overall ownership of 4,219 million acres, and a direct ownership comparable with the QueenÆs land holding of 2,447 million acres. The 3rd largest landowner is the Chinese state, which claims all of Chinese land, about 2,365 million acres.
The 4th largest landowner on earth is the Federal Government of the United States, which owns about one third of the land of the USA, 760 million acres. The fifth largest landowner on earth is the King of Saudi Arabia with 553 million acres.

Typical. That ****es me off and I want to have a small rant about self-obsessed Americans etc etc, and how the limit of knowledge for a lot of them doesn't go beyond the borders of the USA.... but then in a few hours when I've recieved a hell of a lot of abuse from American forums members, I think I may regret overreacting at stereotypical perceptions of Americans etc etc. Besides, I better be nice to them - I'm coming to America for a couple of weeks in a couple of weeks! -------------------- [Signature]

Tbh, there are huge areas of the US that aren't inhabited to any real extent. Also, land used to be extremely cheap nearly everywhere (only a few decades ago). So, it's not surprising certain families have capitalized over the decades and now have seemingly *immense* tracts of land in their possesion.
It's the same in Canada (my native country). 15 years ago, I could have bought a 300 acre tract near to a Soon-to-Be-City for 30k. Today, that same land is worth 375k (I checked), despite it not having changed. The only difference is the city has expanded and people are looking further out. I was stuid not to have bought that parcel then.
So, over the past few years, my family and I have begun to buy certain strategical acerages. Though we're only been buying a few acres at a time (say 5-25), we're buying out far enough that not only is the land very cheap per acre, we also get potentially prime riverfront or lakeshore.
In a couple of decades, we'll be rewarded for our foresight. You can too, if you do some basic research and have even a small amount of money. Seriously, it is that easy... you just need patience and a small amount of money.

I don't know.
Anyhoo - interesting question - if you own a plot of land, how far DOWN do you own it? Is i just first top 5 metres? Or do you own right down to the center of the Earth? And because the Earth is spherical, don't forget that if you tried to dig down, you'd have to dig in ever-decreasing areas, because otherwise you'd stray into the path of someone else's land who might also want to dig straight down to the center of the Earth.
Edit: Is your land a square pyramid that reaches the center of the Earth?!?

It depends on where you are and in which way you own the land. In japan you do indeed own your little plot of land all the way down to the center of the earth.
However, in many nations you only own the surface of the land. In that case any use of the land beneath the surface is restricted by local building laws. Digging deeper requires that you acquire the mineral rights as well. ______________________________________________ -My respect can not be won, only lost. oddly enough many people only own the surface, while some big mining conglomerate might own the stuff below the dirt.

Hold on, I'll just raid my penny jar.
Edit: Oh and the queen actually owns none of that land. The title is ownership by the crown which implies it's owned by the people of the UK. This is due to the fact that much of this land was taken from it's rightful owners and "claimed" for the English nation rather than for the monarchy itself. The Monarchy being the absolute rulers of England at the time then took it from the people of England. As it was not entirely legal to take the ownership from the people, the monarchy declared it was owned by the "crown" since that was, at the time, the legal term used meaning the monarchy and all the people of England as one.

That relates to the "Crown" in its various parts. Judiciaries of the crown, such as the "Crown Prosecution Service" are employed by the state and not directly by the crown. Relating to the terms of the Crown Laws is a feudal throwback to when the ruling monarch created the laws and then left others to enforce them. At that time, it was actually the monarch that paid their wages. By this reference, the term "Crown" meant ruled over by the current monarch as it was a homogemous name to refer to the current monarch rather than changing it from king to queen and back again each time the monarchy changed.
The term in it's literal form means "ruled over by" rather than "owned by". This, you will find is a term referred to in the Magna Carta and the reference makes clear the distinction between monarch and crown. Since the Magna Carta is the nearest thing we have to a bill of rights, it cannot be repealed or overruled.
