I've read something about dropping both and letting some whole new thing take over. Something about letting CPU's do the work and using a programming language like C.

You may have read about Intel's Larrabee project, which in theory will realize DirectX or OpenGL compatibility on the driver level. You will no longer have "this graphics card supports DirectX <insert version here>". Instead, you just install a new graphics driver to upgrade. In theory.
In practical application, the Larrabee isn't expected before 2010, will likely offer less processing power than what NVidia and ATI will offer then, and will first need to be accepted by people and programmers alike.
Furthermore, while the Larrabee can be programmed in C, it does not remove DirectX or OpenGL from existing - it emulates them in software.
As for the whole DX 10, Vista and XP debate, I'd like to add: - Windows 7 slated for release in 2009 - DX 11 slated for release in 2009 for Vista and Windows 7 - DX 11 compatible graphics chips slated for release in 2009
XP is dying out, but you may not need to use Vista if you don't like it... and it's worth to wait another year and see.

As much as I'd love a cross platform API (DX and gaming is the only reason I even run Windows), its not going to happen with OpenGL. Version 3 isn't going to be the promised revolution, if/when it ever comes out. They'll be lucky to have full DX9.0c capability by the time MS rolls out DX11.
The reason CCP probably aren't doing DX10 is because of the low installed base, and the graphical difference doesn't seem to be there. Supporting two engines for no gains and a low number of users is not a wise business decision. DX11 might be worth looking into, but if that dolt Sweeny is to be believed, we're all going to be programming in software with a fully interpreted language for our highly parallel gpgpus by the time that becomes big.
I do hope they are trying or looking into some of the experimental methods I've seen so far. The crappy lighting and normal maps in this game certainly don't feel next gen.

Yup that is it. Also Windows 7 probably won't be out until 2010, although they mention 2009-2010 release. Maybe before Diablo 3 comes out eh?

Unless you are technically enough skilled to reconfigure the whole Vista client, yes, it sucks big time.
Or maybe those who cant should go back to a console and leave the PC's to real men! __________________________________________________

I have DX 10 & Vitsa Home Premium. Vista is superior to XP in all fairness. Much faster OS.
I'm running a quad core with 3GB RAM and a 1GB nvidia card though.
P.S. Eve Premium Graphics is the business!

Edited by: Shintai on 25/09/2008 09:37:23 Its pretty sad to see people are that technological impaired that they think its some evil MS hoax, that Vista supports DX10 and XP doesnt.
The reason why XP cant use DX10 is due to a driver model that we dragged along since 1999. This new driver model in Vista was needed to reduce execution overhead with about 20%. Along with enabling support for more objects and so on that the architecture didnt account for in 1999.
In short, yes...DX10 could theorectically work on XP. If you replaced a huge chunck on XP and made it 80% of the way to Vista. And your XP graphics drivers would no longer work in XP plus alot of other functional issues. In short...you made XP into Vista.
The driver is also moved away from the inner kernel ring. So when the crappy nVidia or AMD driver crashes. Your OS wont BSOD but restart the driver.
Vista also works fine. This is the same lame arguement. We had it before with 2000 vs XP. before that 98 vs 2000.
Grow up!

Oh yes, installing SP1 takes so much skill...[/thread derailment]
To be honest, I don't think DX10 will be needed, I'd much rather see they bring the planets / effects on par with the DX9 ships, stations and gates. The day they do that it will be trinity drooling all over again ... _

the standard rule for all M$ os's is to wait til the second service pack of every other os when upgrading for example
win95b->win98SE->XPsp2-> ?

Edited by: Solomon XI on 25/09/2008 10:36:20 I know someone who has DX10 on WindowsXP Professional SP3. Don't ask me how he did it, though. What's sad is that we all are going to end up using DX10 one of these days. =/
Also- I'll upgrade to Windows Vista when SP2 arrives. Maybe I'll even wait till' SP3 or skip Vista for Windows7. Lol. ~Solo Hoist The Colors. (CEO) |

There is nothing wrong with Vista as far as i can tell. Its a stable OS that looks great and has a lot of features that i like about it. This wasn't supposed to be a thread about vista vs XP!!!!

Five years from now we'd be running Windows 8 or something. Windows 7 seems, so far, be like a Vista Release 2 or Vista Second Edition (see Windows 98 SE).

I've been using M$ products since DOS 5.0, and Vista is by far the most stable, reliable OS that M$ has ever released. I've had Vista BSOD once on me in the past year that I've been using it, and that was my own stupid fault (I missed an important instruction while modding a piece of software).
Vista, is also the only consumer OS capable of taking advantage of my 4 processing cores effectively, while running all the next gen games that I want.
DX10 looks WAY better than any DX9 product. If you've seen screenshots of Crysis side by side, DX10 owns it.
The only criticism I have, is that M$ didn't include a comprehensive malware solution with the OS. Why should I have to buy a separate Virus scanner? Viruses exploit flaws in the software that I paid for, so the software vendor should fix those flaws, or provide some other working solution.
Don't get me wrong, M$ is a big evil corporation, but Vista is a good product.

i use vista and XP on 2 computers vista i find much more stable, quicker(is on a faster computer though) much more user proof(unless like me you disable UAC and all the other restrictions) has much better user control and sharing rights(wouldn't mind having active directory) when a driver crashes, there is not a BSOD and reboot. only time i had a BSOD i was running Virtual PC with XP and VMware in that running fedora(vmware doesnt have signed drivers) 1 issue i have with vista. the damned signed drivers - get rid of that, and no more XP for me King Of The Mountain |

Seriously. It's the new Millennium Edition.
So you're probably going to be waiting for Windows 7.
No its not because:
Win98 - fine Win98 SE - some errors Win98 ME - more errors
Never had bluescreens with vista yet, never had real problems, beneath those to get to know some minor changes as OpenAL and like that..
;)
My Vista is doing fine. well turn UAC off and some other fixes and all is fine
