I see plenty of threads that say: "just travel there in your pod". Apart from having my ship destroyed out from under me, how can I divest myself from my ship to get into my pod? Eject? Can it be done in a station?

Yeah, right click on your ship whilst in station and you have the option to come out in your pod...
...don't do it in space as it'll leave your ship open to boarding.

shuttles are nice and rather cheap way to travel too

Yep, I've been using shuttles, myself. I just wanted to clarify the pod issue so that I did not do something dumb, like ejecting in space and losing my ship to boarders, as was kindly pointed out. Shuttles though, seem to be the faster method of travel, and they are quite cheap. I have 12 or so scattered around Caldari space from previous trips to places....usually to pick up a ship I bought.

While in station, right click on you ship and select "Leave Ship"* Viola, you are in you pod.
I'd recommend buying shuttles though. So cheap they are practically disposable and faster than pods. Plus you can carry a limited amount of stuff in them.
*I pretty sure it is Leave Ship, it may be worded differently.

There is also the "Rookie Ship Abuse" method. Insurance will give you a free rookie ship if you dock in a station where you do not have any ships. You get your 1 piece of trit and a ship. My personal goal is 100 Ibises!

That tripped me out the first it happened. I didn't realize that would happen and I was traveling in my pod and found out how that works. Now I have Reapers scattered around everywhere.

T2 Shuttle!
I used to do big trips as follows: I'd kit out a normal frigate with whatever low slots get me in to warp fastest, whatever mids give me good capacitor, and a MWD.
Then I'd move the MWD up to the F1 slot, set autopilot, and put something heavy on the F1 key. Volume off, I'd go away - dishes, snack, whatever.
I figured that fitting for time-to-warp gave me an advantage in both warping and in approaching the gate, since I'd achieve max speed more quickly, even if it were lower than if I'd fitted for pure speed. IE, while I *can* get a Vigil up to 5400 m/s, I'd rather max out at 3800 m/s and get into warp 1.4 second more quickly. I'm hiding from my main. |

There are a number of ways to travel, each of which has advantages and disadvantages:
1) In your pod.
a) You don't need a ship. d) You have very little protection and no cargo space.
2) In a shuttle.
a) You have a fast, cheap ship that warps quickly and a small cargo compartment. It also has some protection. Get to your destination and repackage the shuttle if you can carry it back or if you can't reprocess it and carry back the minerals to build another one out of if you have a blue print. Shuttle blue prints are very cheap. Carry a shuttle blue print with you and a small amount of trit (shuttles are made entirely out of trit) and you can make one at your destination to take you back (say you are dropping off a ship).
d) Their cargo space is tiny. No afterburner, MWD, Weapons, WCS etc.
3) Rookie ship.
a) They are free. Go to any base you don't already have a ship in your ships hangar at and you will be given a new Rookies ship, fitted out with a basic miner, a civilian weapon and 1 unit of Trit. If you are in a base with an office, you can leave your current ship, put it in one of the office hangar spaces, leave the base, come right back in - and there will be a Rookie ship waiting for you. If you log out with no ship in your ship hangar - you will have a Rookie ship in there with you when you log back in. They have a moderate cargo space (bigger than a shuttle) can use a cargo hold expander, WCS, Civilian AB, and a couple of small weapons or salvagers.
d) They are still very fragile (more fragile than a shuttle), not quite as nimble as a shuttle, can't use anything bigger than the Civilian AB and are likely to run out of juice trying to make a long jump - so that you have to jump several times (this can be mitigated by your Navigation skills).
4) Small Fast Frigate.
a) Moderate cargo space, can fit Overdrive Injectors, Cargo Hold expanders, WCS, MWD, some weapons and they're cheap. Their blueprints are not as cheap as a shuttle but they aren't all that expensive.
d) Not quite as nimble as a shuttle. A good bit bigger if you want to carry it back. The blue prints cost more and it takes a good bit more in minerals, sometimes some rare ones, to build. So, while shuttles and rookie ships are largely disposable ... a Fast Frigate is a little bit less so.
I've used all of these to get myself around. I've also used destroyers and industrials if I had a reason to but if I'm just running an errand - I'll use one of the above, usually a shuttle or a Rookie ship if I need a little more cargo space or don't have a shuttle handy.

I do not suggest flying around your pod. Even if many people will say that it's perfectly safe, you're still playing with fire.
Shuttles, T1 fast frigates, interceptors will do just fine. Lysianna Hazumason
