This is me with my trolling-hat off. Eve needs Goons for the simple reason that this game needs BAD GUYS. CCP has developed "evil" NPCs like Sansha's, Blood Raiders, Guristas et al but they don't provoke anger or hatred in the same way as the Goons. We need something to passionately hate. We also need an unpredictable and ruthless entity that will keep us on our toes and uphold Eve's reputation as a dark, merciless universe. The Goons fit this bill quite nicely. Obviously the Mittani went one step too far and manned up with an OOC apology and compensation, and CCP has followed through with a reasonable punishment.
But Eve MUST remain a cruel and dark place. This is what makes Eve better than every other MMO out there. If you detest the goons, defeat them ingame. Resorting to "meta-game" tactics is sad and pathetic. You're no longer playing a game. Find yourself a new hobby if you're starting to take Eve too seriously.
Long live Eve. |

'Goons' are not going anywhere. Even if they did disband that would not equate to there not being 'bad guys'. Players would simply break off into other corporations that held the same ideals or form a new corp with their favored play style. |

The only reason I tried Eve in the first place was to join B.O.B. against the Goons. The Great war drew a lot of people to the game, because it was an amazing story, from start to finish. The Goons have been involved in every major even in Eve's history. Even now, we are literally unable to stop talking about them, and most of us are eagerly looking forward to the end of April because of something the Goons have planned.
Say what you like about Mittani, but hes a better villain than Sansha Kuvakei could ever be. I've said it before, and I'll probably say it again. "A man with a drone-boat has nothing but time on his hands." |

Yes. I fully agree. As I stated in another thread. Goonswarm may all be a bunch of assholes but they are EvE's assholes and they bring an element to the game that nobody else can. I want them to stay in EvE and do what they do best. Be assholes. This is what is great about EvE. The sandbox. EvE is not about PvP.-á EvE is about the SANDBOX! - CCP!-á Open the door!!! |

I'll tell you a story:
I was once almost a victim of GSF scamming. Even as a highsec griefer, I hated GSF. I thought they were a bunch of blabbering idiots and should die and burn in hell.
Until I joined the CFC.
Now I see the GSF for what it really is. 90% of their players are actually really cool people and will help their blues in any way possible, even if it means dying in combat.
Someone has to be villainized in EVE outside of the NPC's. If the only villains in EVE are NPCm this game will go stale VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY fast

Oh please. Eve does not NEED goons. Eve needs players who know where to draw the line. There are plenty of other bad guys in Eve. I don't care about goons one way or the other, they can go, stay, burn Jita, do whatever they like. But their sense of entitlement toward this game has clearly become delusional. Starting at the top with a leader who thought that pretending remorse could fix the problem that he himself caused.
And it's way too late to expect people to support an alliance that has taken advantage of so many players. Sure, scams, theft, all that are permitted in the game. That doesn't mean anybody who gets scammed is going to like it or forget it. Support for the Goonswarm? Good luck with that. They have made so many enemies that's never going to happen. |

Unattributed famous quote that may or may not be relevant to the discussion:
In the end the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it. It was inevitable that they should make that claim sooner or later: the logic of their position demanded it. Not merely the validity of experience, but the very existence of external reality was tacitly denied by their philosophy.

One of the oddest thing about people putting us up on a pedestal is they are putting us on it for all the wrong reasons. There are better highsec gank guilds than us. There are better griefers than us. We aren't even that good at PvP, the swarm isn't just an Ironic joke, it's how we win fights, buy putting a lot of low SP pilots into relatively cheap easy to fly ships. Test is actually outgooning us on a fairly regular basis now when it comes to just being plain out offensive and gross.
The thing we do well is build relationships. You can't built a coalition on the game plan of "Being an *******". |

Wow. Sorry OP but the stuff on the floor of the forums is getting a little thick.
OP, if you follow eve history, the Goons actually started out as "good guys" until BOB tried to curb stomp them into oblivion. Their own advertised lore backs up that claim as an excuse for their recreation into the swarm. They are not the only bad guys in eve. They are the biggest threat to miners I think Eve has seen in recent times. The collective apologist and band wagon jumping is getting a little gross.
Allow me to remind you of some of the other rogues haunting the space lanes that I have had the honor of losing ships to or being in awe of their proficiency:
Suddenly Ninjas, (these guys were the bane of every hisec missioner who had never even heard of a goon) Moar Tears, (beware JF's everywhere) Unicorns with... (I think these guys are Ninja's pretending it was a sudden attack) A hundred jerky little corps who steal cans in belts, (can't remember all their names) BOB, (the ORIGINAL Boogie man of Eve) IT Alliance, (The bad reimagining that got cancelled from syndication not long after launch) Heretic Nation, (these guys are the moist proficient toll booth operators in eve. Stay out of their systems) Negative Ten, (Bad bad boys but they always seem to honor a ransom.)
I imagine so many more I have never heard of are out their creating content, churning the waters, having fun.
Eve has had a veritable buffet of "evil alliances" who tried to stomp everyone else. -A- is about to remind Eve who they are. The Goons are awesome but so are a hundred other alliances and corps. The true test of the Goons will come when their quick cash moon empire is taken away and they actually have to find ways to fund their griefing without their hatred enemy the industrialist. |

This is why I am pro- GOON. Whenever I see one I spit on them in hi-sec and try to blow them up anywhere else. The GOONS are the only badguys in EVE and every good game needs a badguy.
What people don't understand is that the GOONs are actually TRYING to be the badguys. They love pissing all of us off. Everytime a carebear cries on the forums, somewhere there is a GOON smiling.
The more people hate on GOONs the more they are winning.
Until someone or something can fulfill the badguy role better than the GOONs I will support a good chunk of the things they do. Not all of them of course but a nice amount. |

I've got to get off this thread but let me say this. I like the goons. I like what they do for the most part. They have some of the best posters on the forums and their big show spectacles are fun. But that is what they are, the big fireworks spectacle of Eve who sit in null and then suddenly with a massive budget do big weekend mini-series specials and we all go "OOOHHH."
Except for their market manipulation they have a far lower impact on highsec corps that any of the corps I mentioned in a previous post who are out their greifing, ganking, putting in an honest 9-5pm making it hard for the mission runner, industrialist and too rich flashy drivers everywhere. That is what makes Eve awesome, the collection of rogues not just the really loud ones.
Now off to debate the merits of another midslot in the hulk. Damn it, what the Hulk really needs is missile launchers. |

Although EVE doe not need goons, heck it doesn't really need any single alliance out there as another will pop up in it's stead, I do like having them about as they are most helpful in pushing the game envelope and create some great game content/drama ... seriously, how dull would it be if they were gone?
My Neutral Toon wrote:If you don't like GSF. Then take them down.
Mittnes ban shows you CCP is not in the goons back pocket. IF you are not strong enough to take them down. then STFU, this is Eve.
And to this guy ... simmer down there internet-tough-guy.
I can't take the goons down but that will not stop me from engaging with them in some smack-talk and a few back and forth forum bashings ... ~deal with it~

I like the goons because they generate content like no one else can. No one alliance causes more controversy and more tears like the goons do, and the events this past week confirm that. Whether it's fighting BOB, the Incarna mess, or the titan nerf, you can bet it's going to attract a lot of attention. Not only that, but they do have the interest in keeping the game good (see: tech nerf)! Allow for a CSM revote - Don't Throw 10k+ Votes Under the Bus |

My 2 cents:
The game would be fine without them. It's like saying we need Bob/It or any other large alliance. I doubt they will leave. They like the game too much. Even if the current Goonswarm was to die. I'm sure a new goon alliance will just pop up again.
Edit: There are more than enough "bad people" in Eve, to keep Eve a dark and cruel place. |

The best thing CCP could do after April 28th would be to incorporate this into the game's lore and environment. Jita becomes a wasteland of wrecks, most (all?) of the stations destroyed, the gates to Jita rerouted or scrambled, chronicles and lore news stories written. Jita being left as a lawless 0.4 system with nothing but debris floating through it would be the pinnacle of player created content.
They'll have to run it by Sony first though. |

Anyone read Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle? Two guys fall off a merchant ship into the sea and are washed up on an isolated, but inhabited island. They decide to rule the island, so one forms a government, the other forms a religion. The first thing they do is make the religion illegal. The punishment for being in this religion was public impailment on huge fish hooks. The state has to have an enemy it's protecting the people from, but you can't overcome the enemy or you lose the dynamic...therefore, a religion - believers. It worked. They became wealthy. Hilarious book.
What is missing in EVE isn't bad guys pissing people off. What is missing in EVE are actual competing interests. Running around challenging people to streetfights and calling people who don't want to fight "carebears" isn't remotely the same as the unbridled and never ending warfare of competing interests, and doesn't even touch the dynamics of the game.
What you want are corporations developing empty space. To the space hoodlums this is "carebear" activity. (These rabid brawlers could provide security for a corporation like this...be their military arm. Though, it may initially involve a lot of boring activity. Ask any military policeman who's guarded an airfield.) These corporations acquire systems, set up mining and manufacturing facilities, open trade routes to market their products, ta da ta da. Over time they'll have beaucoup time and resources invested and a serious interest in holding and defending what they've built.
Eventually the borders of these interests start bumping into each other. Their trade activity starts impinging on another interest's trade activities. The growth is hindered. Push comes to shove. They start raiding each others facilities, shipping, mining interests. Enough is enough, boom, warfare. At this level of growth it's no big deal to muster a fighting force on a huge scale. (Having this ability makes street brawling pirates look like mosquitos on an elephant, btw, so that activity is dwarfed by comparison.)
Take botting for instance. If your corp wants to own the system where botters are raking in the dough. How difficult would it be to conquer that system operating with resources on that scale? You'd own them. The more they blindly send out replacement ships, the more dummies you have to train your new fighter pilots with.
A problem seems to be an overage of gamers who want to get into a fabulous ship and go out and just kill stuff. The development of null sec into an empire-like state doesn't satisfy that wanton urge. And, I'll tell you, advocating building the capacity to conduct massive, on-going region-wide warfare isn't being a carebear. Doing what those people you call "carebears" do, that's what you need done in order to engage in the more intensive kind of warfare EVE is capable of providing.
I hope that was adequately confusing.

^^ this combined with stoicfauxs comment about putting law enforcement sort of into the hands of players, you could actually end up with dynamic sec status depending on the upgrades fitted to the system. I would love it more than anything else if CCP disbanded Concord and put the law in the hands of players. Let stations and gates keep their guns, since no station owner is going to want armed hooligans blowing up nuclear weapons outside their expensive station but flag the criminal with a GCC as it is now and let us take care of them. Free market law. |

I agree, and I'm a dirty stinking carebear as far as most of null is concerned. The only pvp I currently indulge in is the market kind, I would certainly be willing to fight for what I had though if law enforcement was player driven, it'd be much more of a frontier atmosphere all round, space isn't meant to be a civilised place. The same thing was said about bob...There will always be a big supply of people like them in all games don't worry.
I do not see their leaders mistake stopping them. They have a great propaganda machine. Anytime someone is big enough to stop them they use propaganda on about blobs and for some reason people listen to them. They split up to get taken out piece meal each time by the biggest group in game ATM. |
