I wasn't sure where to post this, so apologies if its in the wrong area.
In short, how do you achieve the VERY smooth look of eve vids such as 'Day of Darkness'? Because whenever I video-capture in game footage, its as jaggy as hell.
I've considered a few possibilities, but am interested to know what everyone else does.
Do you force AA in EVE somehow? (if so, how?) Do you use a filter or effect in your video-editing package? Is there a certain settings configuration which helps?
thanks for any help ac0lite |

I actually used the nvidia control panel to force AA in the EVE profile. I cranked it all the way up to 8xQ and at one point in time my system uses 50% of my physical memory (3GB) One time I got an error message saying RAM is running low, somehow hit 80%, it asked to close steam, which I did and it went back to 50% |

However, I'm pretty sure, at least for me, that this forced AA only works in fullscreen mode, so playing in windowed mode like many of us do makes it somewhat pointless.
AA can also be simulated by reducing the size of an image. Many might capture video, especially "cinematic" type ones, at a very high resolution, but reduce it's final resolution for the release. This gives the effect of AA, and also makes the video easier to watch for most people, as well as having a smaller download size.
That's pretty much what I can think of at this point. |

EVE needs software native anti-aliasing.

Capture video in 2x the size and resize down. That will also get rid of any jaggy edges. Though you could always force it in nHancer. _

The screenshots are rendered at around 8000x5000 and scaled down, so they might use a similar technique for the videos, also the texture resolutions are much higher. ---------------------------------

I think your right, but why do many people that play eve play in windowed mode?

I play in window mode because I do other things while playing, eve isnt fast paced in any way so I watch video's, chat on msn, browse the web etc I also find window mode very effective when running multiple accounts at once.

People play in windowed mode because the client very often will go mental and unresponsive if you make the mistake of alt-tabbing out while in fullscreen. |

there is another post production method that some people [not many] use to get it extra smooth. there is an avisynth script called "nnedi" which will run an interpolation filter [essentially emulating the hardware level AA the gpu apllies] on the raw fraps and remove all the jaggy edges.

I personally do it for the convenience. I regularly like to use IRC, browse the web and all sort of thing while playing EVE, and fullscreen makes that difficult. Not to mention alt-tabbing from EVE in fullscreen all the time can do some funny things. Windowed mode is also pretty much a requirement when running multiple accounts.

I've only experience with Radeon cards, so keep that in mind. =)
Download ATITools and some video grabbing tool like FRAPS;
1. Use ATITools to force Antialiasing up to 6x; 2. Turn off HDR; 3. Choose either full-screen or windowed mode; 4. Use Some non-linear video editing solution like adobe Premiere to glue it all together; 5. Profit!

I've been running EVE in a window since just about day one. Works much better when you've got multiple monitors and accounts. Also lets you interact with your web-browser, music, chat programs etc... much more easily than with EVE in full-screen.

Day of Darkness accomplished its smooth look by shrinking down the video size. ie, Day of Darkness is 840x524 which is exactly one half of 1680x1048. _______

Ah, sorry Mitnal.
Also, thanks for the replies everyone.
I do run nHancer, and have also considred doubling the resolution, as suggested. Unfortunatly, though I have a shiny and expensive rig, my monitor is well behind the times and doesn't support large resolutions .
I think a new monitor is in order then!

Day of Darkness is pretty old now, and was recorded on the pre-trinity client where AA could still be enabled within the graphics settings. As has been mentioned it was frapsed at 1680x1050 but the final render was half size in order to animate camera shake/zooms and stuff.
It was mostly the use of motion blur which made it look 'smooth' rather than downscaling, as I never really shrank down the footage to fit, rather moving it around a smaller composition frame, and the footage was antialiased from the start. IMO it looks over-blurry compared to some of the clean stuff you see in vids nowadays.
For Trinity stuff such as Lacrimosa I disabled HDR as I couldn't get nHancer to work reliably with AA+HDR going. My client kept crashing in Fleet so I dropped nHander and HDR and forced on 16xFSAA within the Nvidia control panel, which works great if you fullscreen the client. Stuff such as bloom can be added in post a lot easier than AA, though mostly a nice diffusion filter makes it look better anyway.
Downscaling is a good option, but in order to achieve even a 1280x720 final render you're going to have to have quite a serious monitor!
