Two suggestions:
Have people who log in in space start off as invulnerable and cloaked, like after a gate jump, until they actually do something, ie until they prove their client is logged in and synched with the server. Will prevent people who log into laggy systems from being killed while staring at a black screen.
Second, add an AFK timer to boot people who are inactive for more than 15 minutes. This will get rid of extra people idling in stations, afk cloakers in systems, inaccurate local counts, and help prevent my first suggestion from being abused - if there is no response from the client for 15 minutes after login, disconnect that client.

lol I LOVE the AFK idea.
Would stop FCs getting upset at fleets full of AFK people for one.
Also, what is the purpose of this black screen? Its annoying indeed to die during that phase and I've seen it happen to my alt from my mains screen. Disturbing.
I heartily sign the AFK = boot idea. Man goes to the doc, with a strawberry growing out of his head. Doc says "I'll give you some cream to put on it." |

Edited by: Ava Baby on 01/10/2008 09:42:12 Both are good ideas in my book. Maybe make it a 30 min timer just in case they went on a beer run or got stuck on the can.
Also, I wish CCP would hurry up and add that beer smiley.

I like the first part of the Idea. That ship would stay in Dead space until player example set's speed or types in chat something, or doing anything and then it would warp back to last position. However i think the Chat window should on that moment minimize. That would prevent abuse of the solution.
The 15 min timer... Wont agree on that. However i agree that person could set AFK status which would bring some kind icon to his or hers name indicating players AFK status.

The timer would be BAD for mining directors.. I mean, what else are we gonna do sitting in a belt in out command ship? I guess we could fly from one roid to another.. just so we can stay online?

Just out of interest, what DO mining directors do with their time? It sounds to me like your main purpose in Eve life is to be in the belt while your minions carry out their mining.
On the upside, you must get a tonne of housework or assignments done during a mining op, but doesn't it get...
Boring? Not just mining boring either, but REALLY boring? I hope you get to do something different from time to time. |

The timer idea sounds good on the surface, but you would eventually just see AFK'rs look to macro programs to keep them online
I do however think the first option is very good and fully support it.

This is the reason I use a vulture for mining directoring (new word?)... I can at least fit some mining lasers on it (actually can pull in close to a retriever, if fit JUST right). But it takes a LOT of dragging/dropping (every 30 sec?)

My full support to the cloaked login. The AFK thing with disconnect... naah, bad idea.
There is an option to that tho - if a player didn't send any input to the server for more than 15 minutes (indicating he's AFK or at least doing something else than playing EVE), he should be set to an AFK state where his name is displayed in grey (in all chats and in fleet). --- "Multiple exclamation marks are a sure sign for a diseased mind." -Terry Pratchett |

Well in my experience, i would have to argue against the cloaked login. Scientific reasons for one. When you logon, what is it that changed from when you logoff, gates give you temporary cloak because thats what they do, there is nothing in space near/around you to give you cloaking when you log off and back on.
Second, while i had a pilot in a situation where this would've been the greatest thing since sliced bread, its also an "unfair" mechanism for logging to safety. There are mechanisms in the game that put your ship into a somewhat safe situation after you disconnect/log and that is to warp your ship away, even the best prober shouldn't be able to find you and kill you within that 60 second time (unless you've been aggressed of course, then its 15 minutes) with scan time and warp time factored in for them to get to you. Had a carrier pilot under attack, had them log while in combat while i was remotely trying to keep them alive, the people attacking my pilot took longer than 15 minutes and poof, she disappeared from space, however when she logged back in she was of course going to be exactly where she was when she logged off, and the pilots were there almost 23/7 and could've responded to my pilots return (managed to get the carrier out through clever planning but that's moot). It would be use as an instant safety mechanism as opposed to when coming back on you end up back in the midst of the enemy you were trying to escape, instead you come in wherever you warped to and are already cloaked.
Yes it sucks when you die to lag, i've had it happen, however i'm still against this change overall.
Also, opposed to the afk timer too, because i like to log in and need to go afk at times for 15 mins to an hour or more, but i like keeping the conversation logged in case anyone was trying to get info from me and i can respond later.
