I have been wrestling with this question for awhile now. When I first started playing, as a noob I equated might with size and saw carriers, mom's and titans as the ultimate goal. As I played and learned I found myself questioning if capital ships are really worth it for me.
I am a lone wolf style player. I will play with others but I perfer my solitude. As such, I doubt I will ever join a 0.0 alliance and at best may eventually become a permanat resident in low sec.
In the communitys opinion, would it honestly be worth training for a carrier or should I just stick with battleships as my top ship class? -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

IMO, not really, unless you plan on hotdropping on someone via an alt... and even that is of dubious usefulness.

If you play alone or in very small groups..don't bother. Carriers only really start to shine as numbers grow.

How many players would you say one would have to fly with before having a carrier become worth while? -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

if you've got a corp of say, 10 - 15 people a carrier starts becoming more of an asset and less of a liability

If you're not sure whether you need a carrier, you probably don't.
They're great as ego strokes, and as support for a fleet, but horribly vulnerable if you do anything more than sit in dock range and hug station.
The have a nice amount of DPS, but 1k isn't anything particularly special. They have a good tank, and a few other useful tricks. But none of those do you any good, when some git in an interceptor gets a point on you, and calls in the rest of his gang. -- Crane needs more grid 249km locking? |

I am training for one purely for the logistical benefits it confers for my two characters who live in 0.0. I don't plan to use it for more than home defense for a long time. ------------

Wasnt their logistical capability taken away in a previous update? -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

For a player such as yourself, the Carrier is of great utility: think of it as a giant RV. With a carrier you can pick up and move around from low sec pocket to low sec pocket. It's great. Combat wise, PVPing with a carrier with little to no support is a bad idea.

Unless you plan on being in a big alliance, or a decent size corporation in NPC space etc. you shouldn't need one. Only use I could really see for someone in a small group is to jump ships around and commodities. I've got 50mil SP and still don't have a Carrier even though I could have trained for one a long time ago. Just not my cup of tea.

I dont quite follow on that analogy. I looked at the carrier stats on the Thanatos and its cargo bay is only 3,500 and its corp hanger (is that accessable to everyone regardless?) is just 10,000. What sort of ships could you fit into it? Are you counting the drone bay? -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

It has a ship maintenance bay of 1.000.000 m3

I agree that you shouldn't be using one when you're alone. Carriers need support to justify the cost of loosing one in battle.
Also if anyone scrams you somewhere that you can't dock, it wont be long before you're swarmed with enemies.
About the ship maintenance bay, you can store assembled ships in there, and those ships can carry ammo in their cargo hold...I don't think the ships can have other things in their cargo, but I'm not sure. -------- Billy Jean is not my lover |

That was the logistics nerf for carriers. They used to be able to let you store max cargo m3 indys filled with all sorts of goodies 0.0 corps needed but was impractical to ship via freighter or normal indy. This however made for nearly invulneralbe logistics routes so CCP nerfed it. You can still store anything you want in the cargo hold though and can get it to a respectable size with expanders and rigs. I'll be using a niddy myself due to its wonderful mobile pos aspect for my 0.0 adventures. They are quite useful for a solo player with multiple accounts or a very small corp looking to have greater access to hostile 0.0 space. But as others have said don't even try to pvp with it unless your a bill gates of eve and isk is irrelevant or you have lots of support handy.
If you can afford one OP I say go for it.

I'm able to fly Caps, but tbh was only to be able to support Alliance Warfare. Never trained carriers but went to Dreadnaughts instead.95% of my time are passed in HACS.
Being you a lone wolf style of player and not very keen on joining a alliance I doubt you will ever capitalize the time/isks to fly/fit a carrier. Even worst you will became a juicy target as soon you undock lonely in those kind of ships, so ...don't bother.

I'm currently a solo player but I still use my carrier to move things around in low sec and npc space.
Plus one day if I join a corp with more than just my alts I will have a fully functional carrier/dread pilot. Its always a plus to have at least one cap pilot and cyno pilot.

I love my carrier, as a logistic ship :D We in A-War move to were the targets are, so we tend to move a lot. That 1.000.000m3 ship maintenace bay is gold worth :)

You could use it as a hauler for your lone wolf style, but rule out nearly all combat applications. Solo Carrier = KM lulz.
