Take it from me. im a scumbag.
today i robbed some poor soak in a bantam. he didnt smacktalk me. he didnt come back with a gun, and i sat there for 10 minutes hoping he would. and he left 90K in ore in a can floating for me to nick.
I didnt even want the ore really. just make him be a proper caldari and stand up to piwate scumbags like me.
it takes a lot of time to fill a can with a bantam.
dont jetcan solo. dont jetcan without a armed guard.
i felt bad about it afterwards, i wanted to give him his money back. what can i say, im a fail piwate. but please dont put temptation in my way. DONT JETCAN SOLO!!!!

This prolly doesn't belong here as it isn't really helping new players much.
Yeah (if you can) try not to jet can alone. But the bigger thing is for all you new players out there is don't try to fight back.
Unless you absolutly, definitivly, know you can take on the theif its much better to just live and let live and go do a different system. I should know in my younger days I lost a Megathron to a thorax cause me and my corpmates (at the time) decided we had to get back at a can flipper for stealing our ore.

Ahh reminds me of my first week in Eve...
Started out in a Bantam, moved to a 0.8 system, and trained for a Badger. I was canning away, went to get my brand new, wallet draining Badger, piwate can flips while I'm switching. I came back, saw the can, didn't see anyone else, so I took the ore back. Uncloak, scram, etc.. He fired one salvo at me and blew me up.
The funny part was what he said in local, can't remember exaclty what it was, but the gist of it was "Holy Crap, you are new... that shouldn't have killed you. I was just gonna ransom your Indy"
He gave me enough to replace the Indy because he felt really bad about it. (Note I say really bad, he admitted that if I hadn't popped that easily he was gonna shake me down for everything I had or pop me anyways)

I've been can jacked 3 times in the last four weeks since I started playing. Once in a 1.0 system, once in 0.7, and once in 0.5. I've likely had about five or six successful mining runs (fill can, get it all back to the station unmolested) per jack attempt. In two of the jacks, I recovered some of the ore by just waiting out the griefer. One guy destroyed the jet can when he figured I wasn't coming back. In each case, I essentially ignored the griefer, returned to base, and grumbled on chat about losing time etc...this keeps em waiting. Then I read the forums, made skill plans, figured out ship fittings, ran missions...and occasionally ventured out to the ore can in my hauler..."spotting them wating for me", then returning to base to keep them interested. In each case, after a while, the griefer would start trying to taunt me out, or would try and tell me they had given up, all in an effort to bag my hauler I guess. I'd kinda string them along for a while. In two cases, these guys persisted for over an hour, which was pretty amusing.
I say, if these guys are into wasting my time...well then it time to play the time wasting game right back. I figure it's the only way to dervive some kind of decent gameplay out of getting can jacked. So far, it's three hours of pirate time wasted without a whole lot of consequences on my end.

I put 100K iskies in your account ana, consider it recompense for my wrong doings since i couldnt find the guy who i stole it off and he's at your school. if you run into some poor guy in a bantam who complained about me robbing him you can always give it back.
I just feel bad because the money might have been for something important, and while i dont mind robbing the rich and ungrateful blind, scamming skint newbs out of isk just doesnt seem right. even piwate s****should have some self respect.
Just don't tell the piwate alliances. im not setting a precedent.

Will do, Sansha.
You know, it would be more fun to go rushing out in a combat ship to duke it out with a can jacker, no question, but when you are a newb, you have no clue how to tell how dangerous these guys are. The ships I ran into were all something I'd never seen before, which screams: this is something you should not be messing with if you cannot even identify the thing. I have no doubt each of these guys would have scrambled/webbed/used techniques I have no knowledge of to blow my little kestrel mission boat to bits had I tried. It just didn't seem worth it.

I like the way you think! The game is supposed to be fun, you've managed to keep it that way, despite a setback. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University.

A couple characters ago i spent a full month jet can mining high sec solo while waiting for its skills to train.
I never had anyone bother me at all.
Leave caldari space, honestly, its overcrowded. I did my month in minmatar space. Found a nice system with good prices, close to rens, best high sec ore, usualy only a hand full of people in it, plenty of belts for the 1 or 2 other miners that would come around.
In fact that should be a sticky. "leave caldari space"

If the thief does it right in front of you (and you are paying attention), your can explodes and a new one swiftly appears. (Often with an identical name)
The thief will turn flashing red. (if using default settings)
You can always ShowInfo the can, if in doubt. It will show the owner (and their picture)
If it doesn't have your name, or look like you... don't touch it.
Unless, of course, you have some backup.
Can-flipping is most insidious when (as a solo operator) you dock to a station to get that hauler out, to pick up the can. In that 2 minutes you have no eyes on the can, flipping could be afoot. Double-check that jet-can, before scooping it to cargo. _______

Besides the can-flipper starts to flash red on your overview, you can also see it in your local channel. He will have a red scull in his name, in the local channel list. --- It have always fallen to a few to sacrifice for the good of many

Don't can-flippers use cloaks? I've never been can-flipped, but if they use cloaks, I won't be able to see them in the Overview, will I?

Can flipping in a cloaked ship is counter-productive in some cases. Here are two* ways to go about it (*there are more)
1) Flip the can and sit there flashing red, daring the person to either shoot back or steal the ore back. You don't want a cloak for this approach. 2) Stay cloaked and wait for them to return for their hauler. Flip the can while they're away and then cloak back up to wait for them to take the ore.
So, yes, you can use a cloak, or not, depending on your tactics.

I got can flipped one time in my first month of playing. Luckily I had been reading these forums and knew what he wanted to do. So I kept tossing caning out every few minutes (or as soon as the timer would let me) with 2 or 3 units of ore while I kept minning. I would fill my hold and then fly to the station to unload. Then back to the belt with the flashy red badguy still waiting. I would toss a couple more cans for him as I keep on doing what I wanted.
Then just to get his hopes up I would target him just as I was warping back to the station, without firing a shot. He finally gave up after 2 hours and left the system. I think he got a total of 1500 ISKs of ore in two hours of work!

If you are worried about can flippers and you have an indy ship with at least 3000m3 of space than I would invest in the giant secured containers. Yes you will have to learn how to anchor it but it is really easy to do and it takes only about an hour to learn the first level of the skill, which is all you need. Depending on where you like to mine you will have to drop to a .8 or lower security zone to anchor the can but you can find the same ore types and with the new CONCORD rules you are just as safe, or as safe as you can be in this game. Further more you get an exta 900m3 of space in those cans.
It might take a bit of extra time to set up but the ore you mined will stay yours and there isn't a damn thing (for the most part) a flipper can do about it. Your cans are considered your property and if they attack the can they will get CONCORDed.
Note: This is EVE and nothing is ever safe but you don't have to make it easy for the flippers.

How appropriate. I've been playing 3 months and using Giant Secure Cans. They are safe but add a few minutes to a mining run as bookmarks never seem to hit the exact spot.
Anyway, I needed a quick ore run and decided to jetcan just to try it. Hah! Fortunately I only filled it about a third before warping back to station and returning in my Badger. Hmmm. The can was gone. After looking all over for a minute and thinking maybe I had screwed up the bookmark, sure enough here comes a red ship flying around daring me to attack.
I didn't say a word, warped back to station, and went to eat dinner. Hopefully he wasted a half hour waiting for me, lol. Good thread. I learned some things from it. Including looking in the local channel for the tell on the picture. |

Since I joined a fairly large corp, and hang around the systems where my corp is active, people are a lot more chicken to flag themselves.

Won't the new can be yellow on your overview and give you a theft warning if you try to take the ore out?

I was out mining in an Osprey, someone flipped my can in a Rifter. I came back and blew them up with my Drake. They thought I over-reacted.
My only thought on the matter is that if you find yourself in a fair fight, something went wrong.

As Korlissa already asked, isn't the flipped can going to be yellow in color?
Also, when you open the flipped can and try to take the stuff, you should get a warning message, you'd be dumb to try take anything out of it. Or am i missing something here?
Thank you

Yes. Always.
Quote: Also, when you open the flipped can and try to take the stuff, you should get a warning message, you'd be dumb to try take anything out of it. Or am i missing something here?
No, you're spot on (though it is possible to disable the warning, if you ticked the "Don't tell me again" button on a previous popup). Yet somehow many people still manage to sign their own death warrant, by giving the flipper carte blanche to kill them even though the consequences should be self-evident.
In fact the other day I was in lowsec with a small gang, when we came across a young player in a Vexor ratting in a belt. We didn't agress him because he wasn't really worth the sec hit and 15 minutes GCC, so we happily helped him take out the rats (he didn't warp out, which in itself was incredibly foolish). After all the rats are gone, we're about to move on before we see him start to aproach one of our wrecks. We patiently wait the 60 seconds it takes him to slowboat over, all locking him during this duration.
And despite the fact that there are several people locking him, in low-sec, in battlecruisers, and he gets a warning saying "you're about to give <those guys> permission to blow you up"... he goes and takes the loot. Madness! We "educated" him in under 5 seconds.
So I have no idea what's going through these players' minds. You're right that if you're remotely sensible there are plenty of precautions to stop you from "accidentally" taking from someone else's can.

With another toon I found Amarr space a nice place to mine, I have had a toon can flipped before though and I just decided to bung them on the bio and also give local a shout so others get a warning. Also found out flipping the can back .. not a good idea lol. it is fun to keep bumping them though
Whenever I do mining I do it solo and will jetcan, it's just risk vs reward and generally the reward far outweighs the risk.
