Resurrecting the thread a bit since Im extremely interested in it.
I have some success with Workstation 6.5.0 build-118166.
Host Settings: OS: Ubuntu 8.10 Mem: 8gb Proc: AMD Quad Phem 2.7ghz/core
OS Settings: Gnome Version: 2.24.1 Compiz off
Current Guest settings: OS: WinXP SP3 Processor: Single Processor Proc Exec Mode: Auto (Runs with AMD-V) Network: NAT VMWare Tools Version: 6.5.0 build-118166 (Matched to Workstation)
Eve Settings: Res: 1920x1200 Color Depth: 24 + 8bit (Aka, 32bit) Depth: 32 + 8
Overall, the performance seems to be great. Scrolling is smooth, map works great (normally a problem in Windows). A few issues ive found:
* Buttons/Graphic Icons are corrupted. I had the same type of issue with an older GeForce 7300 LE. * Discoloration: Seems to like purple (especially on my Ishtar, icon is white, which fyi looks kinda cool) (Also seen on the 7300) * Line breaks like those on the overview are not visible. Minor issue * Buttons missing/wrong size, example: Sidebar minimize totally gone (annoying for me), and undock buttons (Huge Gear symbol from blueprints) * Menu selection highlighting on mouseover does not work. This actually increases performance, but is useful. * Icon highlighting in Items/Cargo/Ships does not highlight. (Bad if you need to move alot of stuff around, but again, faster) * Warping effect seems to of gone poof in my attempts to fix the graphics, and wont come back. * Alpha channel has issues. Examples: The Auto-help thingy in the windows. Its 100%.
Good things: * Platform Agnostic! Same eve config in Windows/Linux/Mac (if you have all the workstation/fusion versions) * I even successfully ran this VM in a VDI 3.0 server. Combined with a currently unreleased program and RDP 6.1, I was able to (at like 5fps though) run eve. Cool! * Evemon everywhere your Eve goes! (*hugs evemon*) * In-game map is extremely fast
Ive run a few L4 missions, done some 0.0 ratting, and a bit of small scale PvP, and no performance hits thus far. Baring the major issues, the game is very playable. Some parts (for example the non-highlighting of mouse over menu selections, the ingame map) actually perform better than windows native.
If anyone has any ideas on how to fix the Alpha channels, Id love to hear them.
