What I'm wondering is if it is possible to take a copy of VMWare, throw on some virtual machines (the OS isn't important at this time), and have an installation of EVE running in each one? I realize that up to at least 2006 or so (according to posts on these very boards) it wasn't possible, but has the game/OS's changed enough to allow it to become possible (the hardware will not be the bottleneck...trust me on this :D )
Anyways I welcome any feedback on this. Good flying to all!

Doubt it - the game has direct graphics rendering. VMWare machines don't have real graphics cards, they have virtual graphics cards.
Perhaps they support OpenGL and such. Best way to find out - try it.

The latest VMWare products should support DirectX 9.0 and Shader Model 2. I tried only once to install XP and the EvE classic client, but it would not render correctly. However I did not try to investigate any settings, so I cannot say wether it can or cannot work if done properly.

I know it does not work correctly under VMWare Fusion 2 on the Mac. It starts up, but performance is terrible and something is causing the colors to be way off. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |

Why would you want to run a performance struggling product like EVE on a VM??? Needless to say it will bring it down to a crawl if it runs at all...

Actually VMWare is quite nimble. It runs TF2 at a decent clip, better than the "native" WINE can pull off. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |

Indeed, most modern processors are now built with VM in mind. They're designed to run VMs as if it was running as the primary OS. The only bottleneck is the UI/graphics and interaction between the operating systems. --- Mah Sig! MAAAH SIIIG!! WAAAAAAAAH WHERE MY SIIIGGGG???!!?!!

1) EVE is performance struggling only as far as the GPU is concerned. It's pretty low on its demands on CPU, RAM, Network and just about above average on disks. 2) Running windows programs under a VM hosted on a non windows OS can sometimes give you better performance than what you get running it under a native Windows installation. Running them under API emulation layers (like Wine and Wine derived stuff like Cedega) will very often give you better performance than under native Windows.
The unfortunate point is that point 2 is only valid for non GPU related operations therefore (see point 1) EVE is among the most taxed kind of software under both emulations and compatibility layers.

Actually the classic EVE client is stupidly CPU limited as long as it's not v-syncing. Drop yourself in Jita some time, you'll peg a CPU core at 100%. That's also why the Linux/Mac clients are so poor performing; the WINE process has to run on the same thread, and eats up CPU time that would otherwise be used for rendering. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |

Actually most of the hardware that supports virtualization is still considered business only and hardly affordable for the average EVE player. Mostly aimed at larger corporations using ESX sollutions with SANs, fiber based network sollutions etc... Hardly common for the average user.
But I agree with the linux standpoint. If it would run better using say vmware than wine... why not use it.

DukeHilton, all Core 2 and Athlon 64 CPUs have had built-in VM support for several months. They aren't rare at all, and are used in nearly all new computer systems. |

I keep crossing my fingers and hoping for this to come out.
The ability to run eve in a Virtual Machine would truely make my day.

If you really want to do it use server 2008 as it uses a different style of VM. Most VM software programs use software to simulate the hardware where in server 2008 the VM gets direct access to the hardware. This allows the VM to use the actual physical GPU. In the end it would work just as well as running it directly on the OS.

Just tested EVE in a XP virtual machine with vmplayer 2.5. It runs, kind of slow, but enough to change your skills or do other simple tasks (you can even fly). VMplayer 2.5 has support for direct3d.

Resurrecting the thread a bit since Im extremely interested in it.
I have some success with Workstation 6.5.0 build-118166.
Host Settings: OS: Ubuntu 8.10 Mem: 8gb Proc: AMD Quad Phem 2.7ghz/core
OS Settings: Gnome Version: 2.24.1 Compiz off
Current Guest settings: OS: WinXP SP3 Processor: Single Processor Proc Exec Mode: Auto (Runs with AMD-V) Network: NAT VMWare Tools Version: 6.5.0 build-118166 (Matched to Workstation)
Eve Settings: Res: 1920x1200 Color Depth: 24 + 8bit (Aka, 32bit) Depth: 32 + 8
Overall, the performance seems to be great. Scrolling is smooth, map works great (normally a problem in Windows). A few issues ive found:
* Buttons/Graphic Icons are corrupted. I had the same type of issue with an older GeForce 7300 LE. * Discoloration: Seems to like purple (especially on my Ishtar, icon is white, which fyi looks kinda cool) (Also seen on the 7300) * Line breaks like those on the overview are not visible. Minor issue * Buttons missing/wrong size, example: Sidebar minimize totally gone (annoying for me), and undock buttons (Huge Gear symbol from blueprints) * Menu selection highlighting on mouseover does not work. This actually increases performance, but is useful. * Icon highlighting in Items/Cargo/Ships does not highlight. (Bad if you need to move alot of stuff around, but again, faster) * Warping effect seems to of gone poof in my attempts to fix the graphics, and wont come back. * Alpha channel has issues. Examples: The Auto-help thingy in the windows. Its 100%.
Good things: * Platform Agnostic! Same eve config in Windows/Linux/Mac (if you have all the workstation/fusion versions) * I even successfully ran this VM in a VDI 3.0 server. Combined with a currently unreleased program and RDP 6.1, I was able to (at like 5fps though) run eve. Cool! * Evemon everywhere your Eve goes! (*hugs evemon*) * In-game map is extremely fast
Ive run a few L4 missions, done some 0.0 ratting, and a bit of small scale PvP, and no performance hits thus far. Baring the major issues, the game is very playable. Some parts (for example the non-highlighting of mouse over menu selections, the ingame map) actually perform better than windows native.
If anyone has any ideas on how to fix the Alpha channels, Id love to hear them.

I have the exact same results as the post above. Everything is purple-ish, transparency doesn't work quite right, and reds/blues don't show up properly. Otherwise, the performance seems good.

Running in Windows Server 2008 VMWare Workstation (don't know which version) everything is fine.
I can run two virtual machines running EVE on WinXP Pro simultaneously with one on the host without problem. My comp is even below that of the above poster. 2.1Ghz AMD 64 Dual Core, NVidia Geforce 7600GT 256MB, 4GB Memory.
DO NOT use Windows Server Hyper-V Virtual Machines. It drains a lot of resources, even when you don't have the VM running.

Thanks for your reply. Just to clarify, your host OS is Windows Server 2008 and you are running VMWare Workstation 6.5?

I'm trying to get eve working in a VM, can anyone tell me the hardware settings they're giving their VM?
I'm currently trying it with Windows Server 2k8 inside VMware Workstation 6.5.1 when I launch eve I get the Apocrypha splash screen and that's it. I get the box in my toolbar as if Eve is windowed, but it isn't. it never actually launches
any help would be great, thanks =)

Realize the date of the posts - they're all before Apocrypha went live. Since that, you need at least full SM2 support on emulated host Video. Better off with wine, I think. -- Thanks CCP for cu |
