Hi everyone. First timer on the forum and first post.
As the title suggests, I am only two days into the paid account and have already experienced some interesting things.
I was recruited into a corp on day one. I joined only to login on day two to find that the corp was now at war. Apparently, one of the leaders mouthed off to a merc corp and all hell broke loose.
Up until this point I had just done some missions during my trial period and was still feeling my way along, trying to learn. For the majority of the day, I sat docked in station as I was told to hide out by my corpmates. Eventually, I wanted to continue making some money and headed out to continue some basic courier missions.
I managed to get to 1mil ISK and felt quite pleased about it. An hour later, I was AFK for a moment, floating in deadspace, only to return when I heard someone locking on my lowly Incursus. Someone from the merc corp had found me (how exactly is still beyond my scope of knowledge) and wanted 100mil to let me live. I laughed.
Long story short (too late?), about four or five from the merc corp surrounded my ship and pod killed me. I explained that it was my 2nd day and was recruited into the corp unaware of how mouthy the CEO was. I had remembered reading about a log-off tactic, but I decided against that route and chose to die with honor even though all my fancy new fittings were going with me.
Yet, lo and behold, the merc corp showed mercy after all. They told me they'd recoup my losses if I left the corp. So I did. Then they deposited 18mil into my wallet and that was that. They felt bad.
Before that happened, 50k was a huge sum. Now I don't know what to do with myself. Which is, ultimately, the main point of this post.
Being 2 days in, what does someone like me do with 18mil? I know it's chump change to probably everyone I'm asking, but right now, I feel like I just won the lottery. I am currently training my learning skills up as instructed by someone I met. But beyond that, I'm unsure of what ship to fly in.
I'm Gallente, by the way.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. I don't want to blow all this ISK without being smart about it.

Don't jump straight into a bigger ship class, you're too new to really know what you want to do so far so keep doing what you are currently doing and save the cash for when you know what you want.

It kicks hiney in level 2 and some level 3 too
About the post, well, rather naughty to be bought out of a corp, but then again, you didn't sign up for war.
18 million is a bit much to give a new guy, and it can seriously cripple someone game-wise, but i'd say stuff it in a sockdrawer and wait for when you need it. Don't go buying stuff and pimping ships, just 'cause you can, now you got a nice nest egg and using it wisely, for things you need, is the best course of action.
My opinions represent the opinions of my corporation completely. I'm the CEO damnit. |

GOLDEN RULE: DO NOT FLY WHAT YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO LOSE
Silver rule: Trust no one but yourself to watch your hide.
I'm actually surprised they gave you isk in return of leaving the corp. A ton of people (mostly scumbags who "grief") would actually get off on scaring people out of EVE.
In fact, I happen to know someone who logs in just to make sure someone else quits the game.
Learn the mechanics of EVE in an NPC corp. Ask lots of questions and refer to online sources for information (as a lot of people love to throw off newbies into wild goose chases). Do not accept random "group" invites. Do not accept random "isk" from someone (as some more devious isk farmers resort to throwing tainted isk to poor souls to take down as many as they can when they get caught).
If someone doubts that fact about isk farmers, I happen to know a group of isk farmers who live in the same city I am in, and they're connected with the local underground. No, I'm not that stupid to try and get stuff from them over a game like EVE.
Do not limit yourself on percieved limits of the game. In EVE, there are no limits, moral or otherwise. People will lie, cheat, scam, kill and otherwise be as heartless as they can be to get up in the EVEworld. By logging onto EVE, you agree to be affected by such things if they come to you.
Lastly, EVE is a sandbox MMO, meaning that you set your own goals and you define your own defintion of fun in EVE. Some people log in and never leave the station they started in, yet earn millions of isk being market moguls. Others work their way up the manufaturing chain, or provide raw materials. Still others use said factory goods in their ships and go out and do nothing else but blow someone else's ship up.
Good luck, have fun, remember the Golden and silver rules, and welcome to EVE -

EDIT: specifically: Clarity, Focus, Logic, Eidetic Memory. Those 4 will cost you 18M in total, but they will repay that investment 1000x over.

Oh it's huge, he has a Caterpillar 797B which takes him to the quarry where he does his business.. business being sales and marketing.
On topic though if it were me I'd buy something like a Destroyer or maybe a cruiser if you like to mine and put the rest away for when you really need it, 18 mill is a fair amount to start of with so don't waste it on cheap exotic dancers and blue pill.

Edited by: Ankhesentapemkah on 06/10/2008 11:31:59 While it is good to get your attributes up as soon as you can, this process is also tedious and you might want to have some fun instead, and most importantly: Become self-sufficient as soon as you can so you can go make more than 18 million yourself. For that purpose, I'd say buy only the learning skills for the attributes you currently train most, and put the rest towards a catalyst, and go make yourself some money with level 1/2 missions and learn more of how the basic game mechanics work in the process.
Once you have made the money back which you invested in your catalyst and feel you learned the basics, move on to bigger and better stuff. I agree you shouldn't jump straight into a cruiser or above, as it's easy to lose ships if you don't know what to expect. ---
Thanks for all that supported me. Let me know if there's anything I can do for you.

Hi Zela,
as many have said, invest your ISK in skillbooks. These can't be taken away from you, unless you have an insufficent clone.
Here's an article, which may help you decide on what to do next.
Welcome to EVE, my friend.

Invest your cash in skillbooks, especially learning. It pays off hugely in the long run. Implants are an option but can be lost all too easily as you found out, and are expensive to replace for newer players. This is not part of my sig.

Buy these skills, and train them up to level 4. Those are your second-tier learning skills. I know it sounds boring, but if you don't train them later, you may regret it.
All in all, use the isk to invest in your character. Get yourself a set of skill books that are RELEVANT to something you want to do in EvE.

Id probably agree with this as well. If you can put aside, lets say 2mil for shits and giggles (go splash out on a t1 Catty for missioning) but I would also suggest that you SAVE 1mil to invest in the market. Learn about market pvp and the trading profession as fast as possible. Getting a hang of how the market works will be one of the most important things you will learn. A few right choices in the market will far outweigh the amount of isk you will make running lvl 1 missions, and its passive income as well so you wont even have to be at the keys.
Still do your missions, vary your fitting, make sure your ship is insured etc but keep an eye on the market, you might be able to set up some very low buy orders and make a mint selling it a few weeks later. Id suggest going for low "meta" level mods (the ones with different names, like "150 mm Compressed Coil I's" Hybrid guns for example. You might be able to buy them for quite cheap and then sell for a healthy profit. This can be especially true if the profit/volume is great for you, yet way too small for the bigger traders to worry about.
But buy and train those skills as a priority if you plan on playing eve longer than 2-3mths.

Thanks everyone for the informative responses.
The basic gist seems to be train those skills and get a Catalyst. I'm going to try my damnedest to avoid PVP for sometime. I don't think I'll be that lucky again.
I'll be sure to go over the links you all posted and re-read all of your posts when I get some time.
Farina: I'll probably take you up on that.

I was trying to be fairly succinct in the first post, but I should have mentioned that I was appraising my corp of the situation as it was ongoing. None of them were going to come help me out. I let them know that I was pod killed and the mercs were offering to recoup my losses if I quit and my corp advised me to quit. I wouldn't have done so otherwise or I would have just quit when I had to sit in station the entire first day I was in the corp because they went to war.
Also, the CEO and his mates mentioned what caused the war in the channel. I'm new but I've no need to make assumptions.

Learning skills are the worst possible thing to tell a new player to do.
If anything, get the basic skills to level 2, but don't invest all your time into those skills early on. They will suck the enjoyment out of the game, and leave you with a very monotonous and repetitious game experience because you have too little skills in other areas.
You could have a taste of just about everything EVE has to offer within your first two months if you train a little bit of skills in trade, production, mining and combat. Or you could just jump right into the learning skills and do a whole lot of nothing for that time.
Yes they will pay off in the end. No, you will not get a feel for what EVE has to offer if you don't train other skills. So how will you know if you want to commit to the game? Advanced learning skills are a complete waste of time for anyone who isn't "in it for the long haul", so to speak. So do not train them until you know you are ready for that commitment. But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started.
