So i was 0km from one of the compounds in the damsel in distress lvl4 mission using blasters and i missed every single shot i fired, from 0km range? Surely every shot would hit perfectly, i had to get some distance from it for my guns to actually start hitting.
Is this meant to be this way or is it a known problem?

For some reason shooting at 0 range completely messes with the firing calculations on turrets.

I know the basics, i just think this is wrong and a problem ingame, the moment theres any measured distance the guns hit. They should hit from 0km no problem they are almost touching the target so whats the logical reason for missing?
If you hold a gun to someones head and pull the trigger does it miss?

I think it might be because when you're right on top of something, the turrets can't figure out whether you're aiming behind or in front of you and thus swaps around causing the tracking to go loopy. Or perhaps the calculations are trying to divide by zero?

Tracking difficulty is something divided by the distance between you and the target. At zero it's divide by zero = inf = you have 1% chance to hit your target and it will always be wrecking. ---

None of those things u posted come in to play since at 0 u always miss. This has been this way for ages.

But it's always been like that. When you're 0km from the target the tracking formula tries to divide by zero and just tells you that you missed. I can't imagine that a dev wouldn't know about this when it's a basic piece of info in tracking guides.

It's fun watching a missile go round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round and round untill it pops because it can't figure ot you're at 0m from it's owner... ___________

It's not a bug, it's a "divide by zero" feature

The really funny part is when you are trying to hit structures that are 0 km away. You can easily navigate within them, but you have no chance of hitting them with your guns.

If it's a divide-by-zero error, it would be easily avoidable and fixable. The fact the distance is zero would make that type of error an easy suspect, but I don't think CCP's programmers are that incompetent. Instead, I think it must be caused by something else.

But it don't work that way. Missile hits without problems at range 0. It is only guns that miss at range 0.

Edited by: Fennicus on 15/10/2008 11:36:51 If it is indeed a division-by-zero problem, it sounds like the devs need to learn about l'H(pital's rule: firing from 0 at a stationary target should certainly have a finite limit on the targeting calculations...

Well actually i encountered it quite a while ago so it is indeed possible. Unless they decided to fix it....(waits for it)
It happened when i undocked (back when the angle was simply 90 degrees off undock point with stopping thrust) and got stuck inside a corpmate's raven. He then proceeded to lock and fire on me and i juist kept lolling watching the missiles circle around our ships untill they exploded.

Then the solution is as simple as incorporating a simple line of code that says "at 0 km, range = 1m" or something to that effect. It really isn't a hard problem to solve...

The problem is you're acting like it's a bug. It's amusing but it's also just how the formula works. _______________

theorically, at 0m you're in the same position of your target, doing infinite orbits/second, doing inf rad/s.
i may be wrong, but meh, who cares?
