As it is, they make it difficult at times to see whether a module is active or not. tweaky boson Minmatar Republic Military School	Posted - 2008.10.30 21:42:00 - [16] IMO while pretty, EVE backgrounds are already way bright & colorful... besides not looking like space they chew up the HUD quite often (hey is that module ON?). I like rich deep dark colors mixed into the blackness of space. And although I realize systems are procedurally generated, it'd be nice if significant phenomena like nebulae would span multiple star systems with different sizes depending on how close the system is to it. Then there's the whole issue of "feeling" 3D...

The existing skybox graphics in Eve make it a crapshoot whether you can actually see your hud, and specifically whether or not you modules are turned on. This 'real' one you linked would be much worse. it's got nothing to do with art and there would be very few people who would actually want to play the game with that as a background. Nevenda'ar	Posted - 2008.10.30 22:05:00 - [19] Edited by: Nevenda''ar on 30/10/2008 22:05:59 Nebulas only look like that from huge distances, but up close it's just a congregation of loose gas and dust particles, in some cases you woundl't be able to tell that you are inside a nebula in the first place. A typital nebula's particles are very far from one another, so far in fact that it looks nothing like a cloud if you come close to it is only because of the scale involved that the shapes become visible. The nasa photos are a combination of multiple smaller 'eye view' shots and like a puzzle fit into a bigger picture - the nebular are so large that you wouldnt be able to possible see it from end to end with one glance ....or they are so far away from you that it will look more like another star then a nebula. Another thing is that nebulas are rarely, if ever, have much of any color. Most of these nebulas are photographed in x-ray or infrared, or uv spectrum that human eye cant see. The only thing you will see is differences in the shades of gray to black - by the ammount of dust present. More often you wont see anything at all. As far as i know, there are no real 'green goo' glowing nebulas - that is done by nasa and game designers to make things look pretty. but i'm not an astronomer, maybe there are some nebular that reflect starlight in some weird way and have some color because of that, or have heat from radioactivity or friction and 'glow' in infrared or gamma spetrum...

If 4500 of the 5000 systems where like this, the existing in-game nebula's would be wayyyy more awesome and appreciated when you did find a system with one of them. My favorite systems in EVE are the DARK, black with a dark blue or green nebula. I hate the stupid pink systems that look like a sunrise over the ocean. All color seen in images has been added later for specific effect, in some cases to highlight detail, in others to identify specific compounds. Real nebulae clouds are as colorless as the clouds you see overhead. tbqh, I'd just as soon have pure black space and stars as opposed to perpetual fog. In the event of an emergency, my ego may be used as a floatation device.
