On one of my accounts, I bought a character for isk on the auction forums. I won't say when since I don't want to give myself away. Anyway, I noticed in the corp history of character that he had been the founder of a medium sized corporation (50-100 members).
A few of their members had convo'ed saying they were sad to see me go, and realized that if I needed a break, then so be it. It then occurred to me that the seller of the character didn't tell his corp he was selling the character. I then thought it would be funny to see if I could get back into the corp, and sure enough, here I am with full director role.
My question is what do I do? I have no intention of staying in the corp, and I never really expected to be able to get into it. I estimate they have 4 billion-ish in assets. As a scammer, is this an okay take? Or is this situation unfair since the people think I am actually someone else?
I know scamming is a valid strategy in Eve, and I know petitions about this stuff normally fall on def ears because of this, but is this over the line, even for a scammer?
Any thoughts would be appreciated. And please no "zomg dirty scammer" posts. I understand people have stances on scamming, but that is not the question here.

As a scammer.... you should have kept your mouth shut you idiot. By chance are you the same guy who some months back gloated about stealing a bill from a corp because they gave you stuff to transport?
If this doesnt give you away:
Quote: A few of their members had convo'ed saying they were sad to see me go, and realized that if I needed a break, then so be it. It then occurred to me that the seller of the character didn't tell his corp he was selling the character. I think thought it would be funny to see if I could get back into the corp, and sure enough, here I am with full director role.
then bravo, but next time, do the deed before opening your mouth on a public forum.

or hike up the tax and just stay as the nCEO and make isk without playing slowly.

If someone doesn't have the courtesy to inform their corp-mates that they're selling their director-role character then screw them. Steal everything and then tell them that the guy sold you his character and obviously didn't care about the well-being of his former corp.
For an added bonus tell them the name of the guy's new character if you know what it is, and ask them to forward you copies of the angry Eve-mails they send to him.

Go back and reread his post. The character was already out but he managed to get it back in as a director. While the orginal owner didnt seem to tell anyone he did atleast leave the corporation. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

It would be fine to take the money.
However, 4 billion isn't all that much in the grand scheme of things anymore. How does it compare to the price you paid for the character?
If you have director roles, do some stuff to point out that they made a serious mistake. Like moving all the money into different wallet divisions, renaming hangar divisions, etc.
So long as you don't do anything that actually labels you as a corp thief, just a miscreant, then you could re-sell the character for a similar sum that you paid for it. Otherwise, you may get people complaining in any auction that you made, which could reduce the price people were willing to pay, so you lose out in the long run.

Well, I can see why you're asking.
I have no problem with scamming normally because I think people dumb enough to fall for it deserve it but this is kind of different.
I guess it's not too far removed from people infiltrating a corp with an alt because there the principle is they think the player isn't the person they are

There are certain rules about impersonating someone else, but I'm not sure if these apply to bought characters or just similarly named ones.
This is a really really good lesson to people out there to never accept anyone into any corp without doing an eve-search on their char name.

Basically CCP doesn't care. So now it comes down to your own morales. It says alot about you with what you do with this "power". It is alot like the question, you find a wallet on the ground with 1000$, do you keep the money or give it back. No one will ever know but you... (What people have said to your querry also says alot about the people who have responded, no wonder the world is so screwed up these days)

Different details but same end result. Character in a director role without the corp members knowing (for a time) that the owner of the character had changed. I still say take them for everything.
Corp theft is lame as hell when you're stealing from people you know, but stealing from people you don't know who think they know you... now that's another story, OP. Do it and post screenshots plx

Well... I'd say you could do whatever you want. But ethically speaking, it would be nice to let them know what happened and NOT scam them. The reason here being that gaining an advantage through meta-gaming is never really that much fun.

Characters being sold have to be in NPC corps so you cannot just sell a dir/ceo in a corp for people to steal. You were out of the corp and then scammed your way back in. It is up to the corps leadership to properly clear all new and returning members.
You are good to go, STEAL EVERYTHING IMMEDIATELY. Screenshot it and then send a lol in corpmail. --

I would be surprised if your corp didn't already figure it out. I mean, come on. You may have hidden your name and time-frame, but anyone who engaged in such a conversation with you is going to now know you're not who they thought you were.
As for ethics? Even if it were unethical (and I guess it is) -- who cares? It's all about what you're okay doing. Personally, I couldn't bring myself to do that to people. Even a bunch of anonymous people on a game. But I wouldn't fault anyone else for doing it. Of course, if they did and got caught, they may never be trusted by anyone in or out of the corp again. If that's the character you want to play, then go for it. It's your account now.

First, if the transfer of character was done after the rules stated by CCP I guess you are free to rob them as much as you like. You are in the corp, left there by the last owner if I understand you post correct? if so you can pick their loots if you feel for it.
When it comes to the question about the morality of it all.. well that is something you will have to decide by your own. Just remember: a bad reputation earned is a reputation difficult to get rid of! And a good reputation needs to be kept fresh all the time!

Also, as someone else pointed out - 4b ISK isn't a ton "in the grand scheme of things". It would buy about $140 worth of time codes, so I guess you could say it's worth about $140 USD.
So ask yourself this - even as an alter-ego in a video game... can you feel okay about stealing $140 from some people? Even if it's not a ton of money "in eve universe terms", it may be a massive amount for that particular corp. Especially if they're a small corp.
If you're really unsure about it - and considering it's not a massive amount of money honestly - then you could just do the right thing and come clean. Leave the money alone. Tell everyone you'll gladly resign if they ask you to and come out of it being a good guy.
You don't HAVE to do that, of course... But it's probably what *I* would do.
Now, if I was going to be unethical about it, then I would not just rob them blind and run away. I would be more clever about it. Have more fun with it. If you insist on being deceptive, then use the role in the corp to your long term advantage.
You could invite a bunch of new members into the corp. Perhaps you could just bring a whole bunch of jerks into it that you know would destroy the nature of the corp and drive all the old members away out of frustration.
Or instead, you could just stick with the corp - in an honest role, but without ever telling them who you really are. The interesting part in that would be whether you could pull it off when they have specific conversations with you and they detect that things just seem a bit off or inconsistent.
Or stay in the corp, don't screw anyone over -- but utilize the corp to your advantage such as if you get in a beef with someone else or need backup against other pilots. You now have a corp at your back and apparently would have much sway to convince them to help you.
Or take all of the ISK and give it away to random people in some channel, like an evil Robin Hood.
But, first thing first, just ask yourself "Am I cool with stealing $140 from some unsuspecting people"? My ethics and tolerance level is not the same as yours - so only you can answer this for yourself.

Be different and don't scam for once. Telling those corp members who you are and them realizing that you did a decent thing will make you all warm and fuzzy inside. Who knows you might even like the corp.
Just because CCP allows scamming and even indirectly encourages it by not providing better corp management security doesn't mean that you should steal everything that's not nailed down.

Is it unethical? Yes. Is it over the ethical line for a scammer? No. So it comes down to whether you want to unethically scam some people or not. It doesn't matter if they "deserve" it or not by not figuring out who you really are and stupidly giving you access to the corp assets. Ethics is more about right and wrong in the abstract in my opinion than whether or not people have a bad thing coming because they're dumb.
I say don't do it and just go your own way. You don't have to steal and scam in this game. But if you can live with ripping people off then I can't think of what else would stop you. |
