Linkage
I didnt expect it to be quite like that. The acting isnt really that good from what i can see, but its definetly more gritty. Like what they have done to James Bond, which im a massive fan of.
Look forward to this one most definetly ^_^

I beleive Star Trek needs to be taken out of the house, behind the barn and introdiced to Jayne with a double barrled shotgun. Haruhiists - Overloading Out of Pod discussions since 2007.

In terms of concept: Star Trek is basically dead, and going back and doing the original series with new actors is pretty much the worst thing they could do. However, going back and rebooting the series with a new style like Bond, Batman etc., could be quite interesting, as it would actually be something new based on the old franchise, rather than a continuation.
In terms of implementation: It looks awful. Bad acting, cheesy lines, stupendous amounts of action. However, it should be an interesting study in what would happen if you took Roddenberry's concept and executed it in the modern entertainment industry. Just to show how far it's fallen.
Ofc, Batman and Bond took silly over the top series of movies, and by rebooting turned them into something more serious. Thus is makes sense that taking a serious seies and rebooting it will result in a Star Trek version of Batman and Robin. -

It died ages ago.
Voyager and Enterprise were ****ing horrible and the last couple of films huffed giant chodes.
I doubt the new film could make things any worse.
Anyone who thinks they don't need new actors to redo the original show is clearly a plant by the corset industry.
Bill Shatner, god love him, is 108 or something. |

by "last couple of films" you are referring to Nemesis, right? Cause First Contact was awesome
and Shatner is no longer Kirk, he is DENNY CRANE

I thought it looked good. Seems to be very mixed feelings in this thread though. I've been a fan of star trek for a while...not really a huge fan or a particularly devoted one, but I do enjoy the movies and the TV show when they're on. Or, at least I watch TNG and DS9. The rest...meh. I've seen em and once is enough.
This looks interesting to me for three reasons: - I'm not a die-hard trekkie so a new take on it doesn't bother me in the slightest - I'm interested to see where JJ Abrams goes with this, there's nothing wrong with trying something at a new angle - We're lacking some serious sci-fi movies for the most part, so I'm happy for just about anything that comes out with spaceships and 'splosions. -Zyck |

...did they just take Star Trek and removed the Sci-fi part?
Seriously, every good Star Trek film/series had (at its core) a large dose of Sci-fi, where the movie explores current and future technological/social issues in a different context (in order to more easily illuminate the central problems without our pre-conceived perceptions of the problem being in the way). It looks like this movie replaced that part with more explosions. ______________________________________________ -My respect can not be won, only lost. This. Decent scifi movies are rare these days. I'll add the fact that star trek movies in general are horrible(Wrath of Khan not included). They are simply bad movies. They always seem to be full of unnecessary crap, that I suspect was only in the movie because they wanted to do some fan service and give screentime to every character in the TV show. Since the new movie doesn't have this limiting factor it might actually be worth watching.

Orion Slave Girls... never heard of'em ? Also, the "hey, let me just rip another shirt" Kirk ? Now take the rules and regulations of television from nearly 40 years ago, compare it to today's rules and regulations, and this ST is relatively tame in comparison

See?
Insurrection was so good you don't even remember it.
And Nemesis was such a bumnugget I'd totally forgotten they killed Data off in a last ditch attempt to squeeze some gravitas out of the script.

Insurrection was that movie where Picard was hitting on that hundred year old MILF no?

[a] Insurrection wasn't half bad. Nemesis was ok too. They're both way better than that one where Spock's brother took them to visit God, and the first Trek movie was rather crap too.
[b] They should have let trek rest alot longer than they did. Its like they just crapped out Voyager and Enterprise and then said 'this isn't working, reboot'. The problem is partially in the writing, but mostly in the vision, or lack thereof.
They had no idea where to go with Voyager. "hey... lets send it really far away so its exploring new stuff". "ok. we're exploring new stuff. now what?" "um. how about some sort of holodeck malfunction" "the borg" "time travel" "how about an episode with klingons?"
So they said this blows... lets try exploring new stuff at the very beginning. "ok. so. here we are at the beginning, now what?" "time travel" "klingons" "how about an episode with the borg, but like... some sort of accident"
They aren't actually writing anything new, so much as trying to milk new stories out of old material. The entire franchise is totally devoid of creativity.
I can fairly well guarentee that the movie is going to have [1] time travel [2] klingons [3] the borg.
Possibly, time traveling borg klingons?
I for one am NOT going to give them my money.
Sends producers the wrong message "mindless sequels and prequels and reboots of old familar stuff > creative new stuff".
Even as far as sequels go. There are so many other universes that haven't been bled dry. So many old dead sci-fi shows which could be rebooted.
FireFly. Pitch Black. Earth2. Space Above and Beyond.
Let Trek rest its nipples for a day before you get back to milking. |

I think a ST series (or mini series, or movie) based on the mirror universe would be absolutely FANTASTIC. Plenty of unexplored political/social issues, and more action than an entire season of your preferred series.. |
