"The ironically named "New Eden" of EvE Online is a crapsack galaxy. The Amarr are corrupt theocrats that rule 1/3 of the galaxy. The Minmatar not enslaved by the Amarr are too obsessed with vengeance to build their own infrastructure. The Caldari State is a soul-crushing society of Obstructive Bureaucrats, and the Gallente Federation is hopelessly corrupt. Millions of unseen, faceless ship crew are killed daily in the un-ending territorial wars fought by immortal, uncaring pod-pilots (the players). And this was before the empires went to war."

EVE is part of a recent trend towards Dark Fantasy/Sci-Fi in game settings. EVE is supposed to be nihilistic and cruel - that is part if its charm! |

Well, considering the number of ships destroyed every day it still probably numbers in millions.

Any Battlefleet admiral would love to try out his Nova Cannon on Jita IV - 4s undock zone.
But the posters are correct, compared to the Warhammer 40k universe, New Eden is a picknick, a bloody picknick but still a picknick.

Assuming they can get to those escape pods from their location in the ship within 2 minutes. Otherwise millions die daily to insurance fraud alone. |

You let your targets get away in escape pods? I kill every building in the area and leave nothing behind. especially if fighting the amarr.

EVE certainly commands a lot more risk than most MMOs, but those links you do establish with people you're willing to turn your back on, the bonds are usually tight.
That was just my take on it. In the event of an emergency, my ego may be used as a floatation device.

I actually only just came across this very article two days ago, and I wonder now as I did then: in what way is the Federation hopelessly corrupt? I can easily see it as slow to act and often having its priorities confused, but corruption isn't something I've perceived in the government beyond any current real-world democracy. Not exactly crapsack material, really.
If anyone can help me out, I'd actually appreciate it. I don't want to be too optimistic about the Federation. Being blindsided is no fun. _______________________________________________ 'The illiterate of this century are not those who cannot read and write; but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.' |

Well, you kind of answered your own question there, didn't you ? (and by the way, it's "real-world republics", no country today is a "real democracy").
