Edited by: Stitcher on 18/11/2008 13:52:04 Life on a small scale is probably no worse than life here on Earth right now. People have jobs, friends and family, entertainment. Some will be wealthier than others, and I daresay that for a large chunk of New Eden the living quality would more than qualify for "comfortably middle class" in a modern Western nation. For trillions of people, the wars, corruption and all that other nastiness will be a long, long way away - something to be seen on the news, but never experienced. Most likely, the only things distinguishing the lives of any two random civilians would be customs, architecture, and which retail chains they buy their food and consumer electronics from.
hell, even the majority of slaves probably don't get it that bad - food, shelter and family, and the only thing they need to do to secure tenure is work. |

I very much enjoy my stay in New Eden. My Nyx is very roomy, top of the line climate system and the light cycles aboard it is second to none. With the new hydroponics bays and a couple new kitches, the food has lately improved significantly.
I am constantly surrounded by people thats eager to obey me. You cant go wrong with blind obedience.

sure... it's supposed to be dark, vast and depressing. but i still believe it's just an excuse for spoiled kids to go berserk on other kids' sandcastles and be proud about it. and since they're forbidden to leave the toilet seat open, behaving like a total **** here is the last straw of proving their masculinity. appearantly the target group is feasably large - putting the gist back into logistics |

Some alleged democracies are constitutional monarchies rather than republics.
Also, don't confuse the two descriptive axes here — republic and democracy are not mutually exclusive.
Republic is the opposite of monarchy and the two sit on the axis that describes the head of state of the country: is (s)he elected or is the position hereditary.
Democracy is the opposite of dictatorship, and this pair describes who decides on the country's leadership: the people (through various mechanisms) or a single person.
Between the two, you can have any number of combinations: democratic republics, democratic monarchies, dictatorial republics, dictatorial monarchies, and combinations of the various shades inbetween. |

Pure democracy tends to get severely unwieldy beyond populations of one. Democracy in practice tends to be less about your individual voice than it is finding a group of people (the Party) that represents a best fit (aka compromise), with the occassional bout of individuality on matters that really get in your craw.
In that sense, democratic governments, despite appearing superficially undemocratic, are still considered such, because you, the individual, have the freedom to not tow the party line when it suits you. |

Originally by: Kavin Alavandar I actually only just came across this very article two days ago, and I wonder now as I did then: in what way is the Federation hopelessly corrupt? I can easily see it as slow to act and often having its priorities confused, but corruption isn't something I've perceived in the government beyond any current real-world democracy. Not exactly crapsack material, really.
If anyone can help me out, I'd actually appreciate it. I don't want to be too optimistic about the Federation. Being blindsided is no fun.
Methods of Torture - The Gallente
Yeah sure... They're corrupt face it. Or in the best case, ****ed up. Gallente are just as bad as the Caldari, except they pretend to smile. |
