After watching such films and shows like Alive, Lost, Cast Away, and other things about being stranded with other people or alone, I've noticed one thing: Everyone is thin. And then it got me thinking - I know, scary. What would happen if you were stranded with a fairly fat/overweight individual? Would you have to keep a close eye on them, lest their inhuman hunger for sustenance takes over and they embark on a violent rage and kill people to eat them or just eat all the scarce food?
The last thing I want to think about, while stranded in any environment, is to wonder if this person believes I'll go well with tartar sauce.
In any case, what would happen if a fat camp became stranded? 100% entertainment? Or 100% horror with a side of comedy?

Nah, on the high ground fatty has to run up the hill and use energy, energy that comes from his copious reserves of flesh.... |

Incorrect, similar to running from a bear, you run DOWNHILL. Skinny people have much better balance and maneuverability running down a steep slope.

Or similiar to a bear you use bear mace on the sob. I still stand by my outrunning him or going up a hill |

So that's why you never see any fat people stranded, they are the first thing to get eaten by the skinny people!

Edited by: Slade Trillgon on 19/11/2008 19:57:11 Survivor had Rupert. I am sad to say I watched episodes of this show here and there in the past but this guy took the cake.
The short story is. Both teams were kicked off a boat and had a smallish canoe to carry all their shoes as they swam to the island. When they got there they could use anything they had plus a small amount of Panamanian money to trade the islanders for tools and what not.
The big heavy guy carried his teams boat to the top. He was gassed so he said he would sit with the canoe while everyone else ran to get supplies. The next team got their boat up the hill shortly after and the last two in the second group asked if Rupert would watch their canoe full of shoes. He said sure and the last two members of team 2 ran off. Rupert looked around a few times, took all of the second teams shoes out of the boat and ran off and traded them for more stuff for his team.
This is a quote from Rupert on the subject of him stealing the shoes
"Another Drake tribe member, Rupert Boneham, the 39-year-old troubled teens mentor from Indianapolis, Indiana, seized an opportunity and stole all the Morgan tribe members' shoes as they left this most important booty unattended. Rupert then quickly bartered away the stolen items. "Pirates pillage. Pirates steal. Pirates take advantage. We are pirates, so we pirated," explained the smiling Rupert."
So that being said, my tolerance and trust of said fat individual would be the same as with others.

They would never let me on one of those shows. I'd take over the whole island within a week and train the monkeys to use spears.

He's comedic relief and every stranded group needs a morale booster. It's inconsequential that he's chubby, but he will be watched. __________________________________________________

Edited by: Qui Shon on 19/11/2008 21:06:44 Like above, many (not all) of the fat guys not only have a healthy reserve of energy, but can usually survive on much less then the skinny people. From an evolutionary perspective, the people who retain and store the most of what they eat are the "winners". Of course, since food became plentiful, the situation is somewhat reversed, in that those same people are much more likely to become fatties and might not go so high on the dating ladder. Not that that correlates to the number of offspring at all.
Then again, we've all but done away with evolution in developed countries. The smartest people usually have the fewest kids these days, while the simpletons breed like rabbits. If it continues for another, oh, let's say 10 000 years, it might have an effect on our species.

Sounds like a movie I have seen before
To clarify my above post. I would not really trust anyone unless I have some personal history which, in some cases, would mean I am keeping a closer eye on them

I'm quite fat myself, but it's mainly because of the sedentary nature of my... well, anything (from work to hobbies, everything is in front of a computer). I can probably go without food (or with very little food) a LOT longer than most of my "skinnier" aquaintances. Heck, I sometimes even forget to eat the entire day (or even a couple of days), and I'm only reminded that I have to eat by a growling stomach, eventually. And even then, it just has to be something to keep the stomach full, NOT necessarily something nutritious.
So... no... if you have to watch anybody, watch the skinny dudes, they'd go berserk after a day without food, if not sooner. The fat dudes, probably mildly inconvenienced after 2-3 days, and could probably keep on going up to a month or longer by simply eating whatever vegetation is around for trace vitamins and a sensation of non-empty stomach.

Iirc, that crappy movie was only set some couple hundred years into the future. My point was that such a time perspective is entirely too short.

Indeed. It is the skinny people that you need to watch. I'm not really that skinny myself, and i was once kept busy for almost 2 days straight. I didn't even think about food, and the third day i just ate a couple loafs of bread with cheese, and was done with it.
Remember what fat actually is: It is used to fuel the body when it doesn't have any other source :)

Yeah, imagine how much "action" would be in a realistic movie where shedloads of fat people would be stranded somewhere... "oh, we have to find something to eat... like, preferably next tuesday, but next sunday would be ok too, I guess". Not much drama, is it ?
