With ambulation coming, this has been up once or twice, I've seen EVE described as teen rated, but the overall sense of EVE is anything but. Cold, hard and adversarial. Kill or be killed. Adapt or die and all the others of the kind.
To me 'Teen Rated' smacks of nannying, something reviled by these fora, and by extension, the general EVE populace. One has only to look at the near constant grumbling about the language filter and its... eccentricities to get an idea of how players view CCP's adherence to a model of desirable linguistic behavior.
So why is EVE a Teen Rated game?

It's just a semi-arbitrary American rating. No legal meaning AFAIK in the States, and certainly not in any other country.

Teen rating = more USD for CCP. For the rest of the world, they could rate it XXXxXXX and the 10 year-olds would still play.

To get the broadest possible audience. I am afraid it is as easy as that.

Sit down kids, and let Uncle Silver tell you 'bout the good ole days. Ya see, now this was back in '03 it was, Eve came in a box. In these United States, we have a store known as Walmart, and she's a biggun' fer yer software sales. If'un you want to do well at retail with yer boxed game, you gotta have it at Walmart, an' heres the key - Walmart don't carry no M (Mature) rated games. So CCP, bein' the smart fellers they are, made sure and got them that T rating. S' why the Agents don't cuss and the drugs are called boosters.
Still, should come in handy fer this new fangled distribution deal we been hearin' bout. --------------

Several US cities are catching up rapidly. And given some of the post 9/11 legislation, any footage that is taken can be used for a lot more than footage taken in most european countries.

Because the ESRB probably doesn't give a crap what they rate MMO's, since they have to say "Game experience may change during online play" and the game is entirley online.
As for how they decide the rating, to put it simply, there's no sex and no graphic violence. That's what ****es parents in the States off. They couldn't give a rat's ass about the "attitude" of the game. The attention around shootings and violence in this country makes parents overly concerned about any game with blood and guns, and ignores any larger "theme" of a game. This is exemplified in the reviews of many games that don't have a harmful overall theme, but have blood or guns and as such, get rated M.
To put it simply, when a game is rated here in the States, it's not rated on what the game is ACTUALLY about, it's just how much blood and sex is in it. All the ignorant parents out here seem to think that if a 15 year old sees some girls boob or sees someone bleed in a game, it's going to corrupt their mind and blah blah. It stems off this idea here that children are unable to do wrong.

That statement comes from the ideals that came from the Great Depression, the idea that your children should have a better life than you had. This has been expanded so far that discipline has been pushed aside and children believe that they rule the world (or household). ------------------------------------

Pretty much. But the end result is that children get away with tons of things and rarely get punished for it. That's why there's bullying in schools, drinking, drug use, etc etc. Not because of GTA IV. -- Your bad loan management perfectly strikes the stock market, wrecking for -777.68 points. |

E10+ "Titles in this category may contain more cartoon, fantasy or mild violence, mild language, and/or minimal suggestive themes." Teen "Titles in this category may contain violent content, mild or strong language, and/or suggestive themes."
Space ships arn't people so they should probably go under cartoon violence. And the only suggestive themes are the drugs and references to slavery and prostitution.

First, let me point out that it is a misconception that buying an M-rated game (or any game at all) in any place in America is illegal if you are "under age". The ESRB system is ENTIRELY VOLUNTARY. If a store won't sell you an M-rated game and you are under age, it is purely their company policy (to appease parents and various groups) and has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE LAW.
Further, the few such laws that ave been attempted or established (such as the law in California which Shchwarzenegger signed) have been overturned by state supreme courts.
That said, I doubt many players are young teens who could not otherwise buy the game. Especially since they can buy it online without any problem whatsoever. I don't see why it isn't at least rated M. Or even better - NO RATING. Make it a brutal game with completely open options. I don't want to play a fisher priced game that is appropriate for a ten year old or a fourteen year old. I want sex, drugs, brutality, deception. Everything.

So why is EVE a Teen Rated game?
Well, this is really two questions:
1. What does EVE benefit by being rated Teen instead of Mature?
2. What does EVE lose by being rated Teen instead of Mature?
1. A wider audience, obviously. But that's about it.
2. Well the rating, as far as I know, only covers content in the actual game - it doesn't cover fiction on the eve website. So the game content (as in what actually appears in the client) could not have: a) blood b) sexual references c) nudity d) f-bombs
What in EVE would significantly benefit from these things? Sure, our agents dropping f-bombs would be pretty entertaining, and our corpses could have actual balls, but not much else really. Topless dancers in ambulation would be entertaining, but then I'm fairly certain no one would ever undock again. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.83 (Updated 7/3) |
