Classic client runs just fine on the newer XP EEEs. Tiny screen takes some getting used to though - tight overview settings are really important.

I'm playing on a macbook pro, using the Mac client, highly recommend it, fantastically well designed Laptop, best I've owned. Good battery life and great performance.
Specs:
Processor Name:Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Speed:2.4 GHz Number Of Processors:1 Total Number Of Cores:2 L2 Cache:3 MB Memory:2 GB Bus Speed:800 MHz
Chipset Model:GeForce 8600M GT Type:Display Bus:PCIe PCIe Lane Width:x16 VRAM (Total):256 MB
It's got a 250gb hard disk too.
No idea what the price is in US $ but cost me about $2,500 Australian at the start of the year, Apple has a deal where if your a student you can get a nice discount on it.

If my numbers are currect that's about $1500-1600 USD.
Using a Dell Inspiron 1720 with the same video card as the Macbook above. 2gb ram, Vista, hell of a lot of stuff running in the background (I go for excessive desktop customization ). Runs EVE Premium client no problem. EVE does tend to drop the battery life from 3-4hrs to 1-1.5hrs though. Think it was around $1,000 from the Dell Outlet store. 17" though so not the most portable thing out there.

Medion MD 96970 laptop from Aldi, working just fine for me here, Premium Graphics and all.
I also play on a MacBook (with the Intel integrated graphics), and that is playable if you know the right tricks. I use that client for flying my hauler/blaster boat alt.

Edited by: Norwest on 24/11/2008 05:39:15 I run an HP dv2700 (14", ~$CDN800, has 128mb dedicated graphics card in it), and get about 40fps on a premium client or 60 on a classic. (This is stock)
I often run two classic clients on an attached 22" moniter, with stuff like firefox and itunes on it the background and get about 30fps in each client. (This is after I upgraded to 4GB ram, about $100)
There was a 15" model available with a 256mb dedicated video card for about $200 more when I purchased this laptop, in august. ***** Rule 27: 'Don't be afraid to be the first to resort to violence.' -The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Pirates [schlockmercenary.com] |

Which Mac though? The OP was asking for laptop recommendations, and MacBook Pro is probably out of their budget range ($1000). EVE works fine on my 17" iMac, but it's not a laptop and hardly portable (more portable than most PCs due to all-in-one design, but still...)

IBM Thinkpad T60 here, runs on premium but without shadows and bloom and such, but still looks great. Probably out of price range though - it's a 3year old laptop but probably still about ~$1500 ish.
I <3 my laptop though, it's the only computer I use. __________________________________

I melted my laptop last month playing Eve, but it worked great till that point.
I had a second moniter set up, which is what I think melted the graphics card, which started to smoke the laptop. Anyways, Laptop works great for playing Eve

Acer Aspire 7520G - TL-60 2Ghz, 3Gb of RAM and GF 8600GS M 512Mb. Runs two EVE premium clients very well. It's not really a "laptop" but more like a desktop replacement.
I'd say any modern laptop with a dual-core processor, atleast 2Gb of RAM (Easy and pretty cheap to add a bigger memory) and Nvidia's 8600 Mobile series or higher will run EVE perfectly.
I have zero experience with ATI's craphics cards so can't say anything about them except try to avoid them like the plague. :] ------------------------ Don't you see the bodies burning, Desolate and full of yearning, Dying of anticipation, Choking from intoxication!

I use an acer aspire which is now more than 3 years old and still runs classic client without issues and has 3 hours+ battery life (that is with a new battery). Medions and acers might be a bit worse on strength of case, but have great price/performance. ---------------------------------------------

I bought a HP not too long ago for about 800$ from Best ***. Despite Vista, it can run two premium clients+Vent+internet explorer+my .pdf map without issue. It takes a while to load Ventrillo for some reason, but Eve runs very smoothly.
2 ghz AMD Turion X2 2 gb of ram Nvidia 8400 GS M (256 mb dedicated) 200 gb 5400 rpm 15.4 inch glossy widescreen + mic & webcam
Seemed like a good value at the time, but recently I saw a Dell with similiar specs for 700$

Edited by: Toshiro GreyHawk on 24/11/2008 08:07:07 I got a new Dell XPS 1530 which I use with a 22" external plat panel monitor.
I bought the smaller system because I had a specific spot in mind for the lap top but have since rigged up something else that lets me see both monitors at the same time. Here ... I now wish I'd sprung for the 1730 with the bigger built in monitor. For anyone thinking about running on the internal monitor alone - definitely get the bigger one.
Runs premium graphics with several clients, in windows fairly well. Cost about $3k.
Look at the dell site for particulars.

Yes my sony viao copes admirably well... tbh any laptop with 2gb ram, a core2 processor and a decent named graphics card will do you... but the sony's do have gorgeous screens that make premium look stunning. Dae.

I use a Fujitso - Amilo Pa 5335, I got it from dabs.com
Sweet graphics card, run eve at full res, windowed or not, with HDR and bloom on. Gets hot after a while but has never crashed. Regardless of what people say about vista ive never had a problem running eve with it on this laptop at full grpahics. For the price its amazing.
I cant find it on newegg.com or tigerddirect.com but it will atleast give you an idear on spec's.

Bought a Zepto 6 months ago, spent almost exactly 1kÇ and can easily play 1 premium and 1 classic client, usually have 2 classic and 1 premium client + a bunch of other stuff like movies, firefox, winamp and crap. Since that was 6 months ago and a lot have happened since then you can probobly get something significantly better for the same price now.
Mine has got 8600 GT 512, 4gb DDR2, T8100 2.1ghz, 320gb HD, 15.4 screen etc etc...
Don't think zepto delivers to the US yet tho. oh and btw, i collect badgers... |

Used to. Can't give you too much advice seeing as I ran it on an Dell XPS which is over your budget and not really portable. With a 1k budget I'm sure you'll be able to play EVE on it, perhaps even get premium happening. It'll be a pain in the ass on such a small screen though, so don't expect it to be as good as playing on a proper screen. Meanwhile, on the other side of town . . . |
