Edited by: Epegi Givo on 24/11/2008 06:00:38 do you really measure height in feet/inches
cause I was playing today and someone claiming to be from england said she was 5'6 (5 feet 6 inches)
it just seemed a little odd because Britain is using the metric system. -------------------------------------

Distances on roads are still measured in miles, beer still comes in pints, a person's weight is usually measured in stones and pounds. Petrol is sold by the litre, foodstuffs are weighed in kgs etc. We are officially metric although I'd say most people older than 20 will think in Imperial as opposed to metric. Calm Your Passion |

Yeah, although we're metric, there are still a lot of things where it's far more common to talk in Imperial measurements.
Height is one. Weight is another, though we use stones and pounds rather than just pounds as the Americans tend to do. Road distances and vehicle speeds - still use miles per hour. Beer - pints.

Fixed that for ya. Seriously I thought the british spawned the language. Five minutes of watching your parliament on c-span and all I hear is clicks and pops.
And what the hell is a tradesmen's entrance?

Corrected it again for you!
A tradesman's entrance is either:
a) A back or side entrance to a house, bacuase posh people would want tradesmen to deal with their servants and not use the front entrance to the house. b) A euphamism for bum. As in "Does she take it up the tradesman's?"

I'm Multi-Measurist.
I measure with what ever unit is closer. Height is usually in Feet and Inches though, yes. Feet and Inches are more relative to each other than meters and centimeters. Say if someone is 6' 2", and another person is 5'2", its a lot easier to visualise the missing 1'.
However say there is a measurement that is pretty much an inch, but around 2cm. I'll just say "Yeah its about an inch" rather than "Yeah, about 2cm"
However if I'm marking something out, or making something, i'll generally work in millimeters, because they're good enough for my level of accuracy.

Yeah we're supposed to be all metric and that. And if I'm doing calculations & such, that's definitely what I use. Food is sold in kilograms, cloth is sold in metres, etc.
But we still think in feet/inches. Road signs still show miles, not Km. Beer is sold in pints - in pubs. But if you buy a bottle of beer in a shop, it will be in metric.

Fareham, Hampshire. The local ASDA in the area is down to 89p. Shocking revelations, they've always been the cheapest though. What with essentially being walmart.
89p! Thats what... Year 2002 prices?

Believe it or not, I think that's just LAST YEARS prices - it's not as long ago as you think - it really has gone up a LOT in short space of time.
Maybe two years ago's prices.
This thread is funny. Keep it up.

True, I only started driving this year so I haven't really noticed until now. Even then, I only ever see the petrol station once a month, if that.

There's actually a bit of conflict between metric which is what all of Europe use and UK Imperial measures which is what people are used to.
There was not too long ago some friction between shop keepers who were using imperial and the drive to standardise from the EU.

Okay, I'm officially adopting "motion lotion" - it's just too awesome to pass up.
let's see... I personally measure:
my height in feet and inches my weight in kilograms my beer in pints my other liquids in liters my distances in meters and miles my temperatures in Celcius -

Would be funny if the UK would also adopt driving on the right (pun intended) of the road, or rather... some would just like you use both metric and imperial.
Roundabouts would be great fun.

little known fact - driving on the left hails from a rather less... peaceful time in our history, when it was a good idea to keep your sword-arm in the middle of the road as you rode on horseback. -

That'd be a laugh, especially since metric is inherently an easier system to learn due to it actually using the same numerical base as the arabic numbers.

Funnily enough I am reading "Made in America" by Bill Bryson at the moment. I am taking the majority at face value as "A Brief History of Allmost Everything" was mostly spot on.
Point in context, "Stiff upper lip" is actualy an Americanism, not British Yea we stoles it, it's ours now.
Working from it he utter rips to pieces the Disney version of American history alongside how this lead to words and phrases being made. The most interesting one was the fact that in the original American flag, it appears they used a Royal Navy Ensighn with white background and stitched on 13 red stripes. Looked more like the Australian flag to be honest, funny how history is stranger than fiction in some respects eh?
With regards to Imperialism, it is called Imperialism because it was British Imperial system. The early Americans called themselves "American" in the sense that I had a BLT "A week last Tuesday", and hence wanted to follow Britain in many respects, hence they kept the language and conventions mostly intact and used the system they had learned from the teet, Imperial.
Metric is the best thing France has ever done in my opinion, I mean that in a very good way, I never learned Imperial and to be honest people look at me strange when I have to seriously think about what a foot is in respect to a meter. Give it 20 years, and we will be humoring Grandad about Imperial as the younger generation uses metric exclusively. I assume the French had the same problem just after the revolution getting the older generation out the way to make Metric the only one even thought of being used.
