What big exploits / bugs have there been in EVE that players have been using to gain personal benefits?
Would be nice to have a bit of history, about this topic.

POS Bowling.
Get a very big ship up to high speed and bump out ships inside the sheilds.
Now considered an exploit.

The smartbomb ratting was simple
--Fit smartbombs on several ship --Make sure the ships have the cap to perma-run them --Fly to belt --Fly to position where rats spawn (at this time rats ALWAYS spawned at a specific KNOWN point) --Active smart bombs, and let them run.
Eventually, the NPCs would spawn, and nearly instantly die. At that date in Eve's history, if you killed rats fast, they spawned back faster, so you almost immediately got new NPCs spawning,.... who almost instantly died.... causing more NPCs to almost instantly spawn.... who almost instantly died...., etc, etc, etc....
Even with tiny bounties, folks who used the exploit were making big money. CCP perma-banned the worst abusers.
As for Concord tanking, I'm less familar with it, as I've never been very aggressive in high sec, but if rumor is true, there was a time when remote reping someone in fight, even if they were being attacked by concord, was NOT an illegal act.
Play nice while you butcher each other.

hey hey
Sploit : remote repping the npc's (never did but know some people who did)
instead of taking any sec hit or getting agression first you could warp into a belt and simply remote rep the npc who has your victim tackled. effectivly using the npc as your tackler.
this was seen alot in some of the high sec plexes and due to the high respawns your tank would soon break and leave a nice looking wreck for someone to loot.
Fix : you will now get criminally flagged when you remote rep and npc.
Sploit : "Gate Sniping" back in the day when a tempest had decent enough alpha and range they would sit 150+km from a gate and simply snipe you from afar. you were locked and dead before you could warp. the sentries couldnt save you because they had 150km range gunz only. you could also do this with a pos and you outranged its gunz and assaulted in in BS's
Fix(s) Gate/POS guns increased range and max 249km lock range cap.
Sploit : BSOD smartbombing ships placed at the exit point of a station would kill you faster than your ship would appear in space
Fix : 5km activation range near a station iirc
btw you still get smartbombing BS's and carriers/moms sitting at a gate doing the disco. this isnt considered an exploit

When war decs cost the same a certain alliance used it as a way to attract more corps in to their alliance, those corps would pay for the war dec on an enemy once they joined this alliance, hence lots of targets for all alliance members, excellent idea, which got nerfed when war deccing cost rose depending on how many war decs you already have. can't remember alliance name, possibly privateers. ====================

its player owned ships that had a capped to a max range.. 249.99km..
sentry guns still have a range of 150km.

Most profitable exploits:
POS-bowling (bumping all sorts of ships out of POS shields and then boarding them and leaving) Jumpbridging freighters with Titan to npc-trade in 0.0 with static trade routes to make billions and billions every day. 0.0 Cosmos plex despawn camping to effectively 'own' multi-billion isk plexes from DT-to-DT
Of these only POS-bowling are currently considered an exploit these days, but the rest still go on.

Something I found on Sisi with Blackops. Not heard of it being used but basicly you could blackops jump ANY ship provided you had the fuel.
Also the blackops portal would remain open as long as the cyno was up (though the effect would vanish)
I have a video of my alt in a stabber (on sisi) going though the same portal twice by jumping, warping back to gate, jumping back to the blackops, warping to it, jumping though portal again.
Also did it with a tempest.
Must edit that fraps :D
It was fixed pretty fast though.

You used to be able to adjust your graphics settings in a certain way to make out the outline of a cloaked ship.
CCP has now fixed this by removing them from space altogether, which is why sometimes you do not decloak when an interceptor comes past less than 2,000m from you as you client may not have updated in the moment it was inside that range.
Oh and when blackops were first released you could shoot someone in empire and then cyno out to low-sec before concord got you!
There are many places in this game where battles are fought and won, EFT isn't one of them. |

No one mentioned megacyte duping! Basically some people found a way to duplicate megacyte right in their hangars! Thankfully the offenders were not wise enough to launder the megacyte (e.g. use it to build ships/items) and dumped it on the market. This raised a flag with the GMs, and as I understand it they got permabanned. -------------------

Level 4 courier missions...
They used to require you to move NPC trade goods, and you could complete them without being in the station...
SO:
Have a Level 4 q20ish courier agent...
Put 1 billion isk of trade goods in about 20 stations where you had to deliver the courier goods...
Then spam ACCEPT MISSION and MISSION COMPLETE!
The top level 4 courier missions with max LP skills generated easily 9000Lp a mission and about 4mil isk in rewards...
Doing this would net about 250000-500000LP a day as when you got good at it, you'd have multiple L4 courier missions in a cluster and billions of isk in trade goods in the cluster... All the goods you would redistriubute with a freighter...

Equipment arrays at POS's used to reduce the mineral inefficiency too much, so you could make a ship for X cost at a pos and then reprocess the ship for X + Y outcome...
This netted people billions...

Carriers used to let you have cargo ships in their ship bays filled with cargo...
It was a common thing to get some IT 5s (or IT IIIs) loaded with all expanded cargo II and then 3 cargo rigs... Then you would stuff them filled with things and stuff the ships in a carrier---BOOM--mini jump freighter...
Once in a while if you browse enough killboards you will still see a rigged IT 3 popped. All the younger players on the killboards then post STFU comments like, "OMG what a loser for rigging an IT III!" They don't realize that these IT IIIs are left over from that exploit mechanic.

Jetcan mining, launching jetcans to mine wasn't an intended game mechanic and is therefore an exploit.
Instabookmarks, pirates came up with bookmarks to warp to a gate at 0km before warp to zero to be able to get through high sec unharmed.

ive always considered a sec can to be a very broken mechanic/exploit.
its bigger on the inside than on the outside :/ you see alot of ships using cans to increase space. one of the old school pvp tricks is to put cap boosters inside a can in your hold to squeeze that last cap booster in.
dreads and carriers use cans for extra jump fuel space :/

I think you need to learn the definition of the word "exploit", and how it relates to "unintended game mechanics".
Here's an example: Adding red Supercapital pilots to your buddy list. This way, you'll always know when they (and their ships) are online. Exploit or Unintended Game Mechanic?
Another example: Webbing friendly Freighters while they're aligning to warp, resulting in them needing only a fraction of the normal time to warp off. Exploit or Unintended Game Mechanic? |

Please explain to me how it is even remotely possible that CCP did not INTEND and PLAN on secure cans being used that way?

there is presently a method of duping modules by using the ship fitting screen and a small secure container with a blank password.
simply drag the module back and forth from the container to the fitting screen and back again as fast as you possibly can, eventually (within a minute if you're fast enough) the module will dupe. there will be two of them, one fitted and one in the container. rinse and repeat. only works with modules, not ammo.

also FYI a level two mission (i will not say the name, but it is handed out by security agents) spawns an empty Opex Yacht. Your mission goal is to blow it up, however you can board it and dock it in a station. And bam, you have yourself a genuine Opex Luxury Yacht.
My only guess is the mission was made by new staff who have no idea what an opex yacht actually is. 427273? That's Numberwang! |

Obviously, the duplicating of items has to be the biggest exploit ever. These two posts are about the same bug, as you could duplicate anything. But it's most known as megacyte duping, since that was the most profitable way to use it.

And no, this bug was not noticed by a flag (well, there could have been flags without action yet)... It was in the very early days of EVE with the war between Stain Alliance and RUS, when a war target industrial was killed and it turned out to be filled with megacyte. Back in those days, that was an insane worth of minerals - and if anyone actually would have had such an amount of mega it wouldn't have been transported in an industrial. Needless to say, when this had been discovered it was quickly fixed and bans were handed out... Am I forced to have any regret? I've become the lie, beautiful and free In my righteous own mind I adore and preach the insanity you gave to me |

I'm wondering if the "POS hiding" exploit mentioned by GM Grimmi in the sticky could be used to hide other things, such as asteroid belts, exploration sites, stargates, stations...
It's interesting to read about these things, and I wonder sometimes how people even manage to discover them. On the other hand, I'm also one to want everyone to play the game fairly.

Another lag exploit:
In jita, back when it was uber super laggy with "only" 300 people in sys, and there was no contract system, people would trade goods (usually very expensive faction items) via the trade window in Jita. If Jita was especially laggy, and the player was fast they could trade items without really trading them.
How it worked: Player 1 puts navy raven in trade box, player 2 puts 1bill isk into the trade window (CNRs used to be pretty expensive) and clicks accept, player 1 quickly moves item back into his own hanger and clicks accept. Player 2 now has traded nothing for 1bill isk.
