I was recently looking at my fav frigate, my trusty old Kestrel, and I was marveling that this ship is still alive. I have scored 53 kills with it which is nothing special by itself but then it struck me: This SPECIFIC ship has downed 53 ships and it is still flying. I have not killed 53 ships in various kessies, but with this specific one. Hmm...
I can see my kill mails, but this information needs a lot of filtering and work to break it downto ship by ship. Now WHAT IF we had a separate tab next to the ship's attributes, insurance, etc, named history? This could track kills and other stuff we can come up.(You repackage it though and it is gone as is insurance. Lets think of it as refurbishing/reconstruction.)
So imagine that the history tab could look something simple like:
Day of creation: Manufacturer:
Kills
Titans:0 Capitals:0 BSs:1 BCS:2 .... SHUTLES:1235 PODS:12
Ore mined (for.. you know, miners)
Veld: 876264 Scordite: 3453 .....
Salvaged(maybe): .....
Cargo hauled(for haulers): .......
Star systems visited (unique ones):
X
etc
Suddenly a ship becomes more than a tool but something unique and makes more reason to name it now, instead of just being X's ship on the way to the slaughterhouse. Now if this history could als o be public, the name and history of ship suddenly ties to something tangible to others as well as to its owner. Few ships have managed to acquire fame by name and personally I can only come up with the Veldnaught.
Imagine now selling (via contract) a frigate with a titan kill? Or a Battleship which has survived for years and has killed hundreds? Or a ship that has visited 5000 star systems? Such ships suddenly become unique and their history adds considerable value to their price. Collectible? Why not. New market? Very possible.
Imagine now if the Veldnaught was up for sale (like if). How much of the price would be due to its name and fame?
Of course the skill of the owner is what made the ship famous, but its fame will sort of rub off to the new owner. People would say "Look its the Veldnaught! Is that the guy who bought it?" Or "Look its the Veldnaught! Run!!!"(like if)
All these would just be counters so no lag. At least no more lag than whatever your combat log generates by just being there. At least I think no lag. In fact if there will be lag involved, can it. So lets assume no lag.
I do not know, may be it is the alcohol that has reactivated a dormant part of my brain and I am being creative, or I am just that ****ed and I am simply brain farting here. What daya think?

Funny, this same idea occurred to me the other day. I found an old Cynabal I hadn't used in years, tucked away in Syndicate that I used to wreak havoc in, made me wonder if there was a list somehow. A series of 'notches' like the old pilots used to use would be really cool. :) |

Well, if there is proof(titan kill), I can assure you that several people would pay a premium to buy such a ship. And where there is a demand, there is a market. Nothing wrong or right with it. Just business.

Ok, stupid or clever works as well. All is business. In any case, I am mostly interested in making ships more personal to the pilot. If people decide to make money out of it, good for them.

You do realize that the ship isn't special just because it was involved in a Titan kill, right? It's not the ship, it's the pilot that had the skills to keep it from being destroyed.

Worth it for added "Oh shi-" moments when people see a specific ship warp in. True, a ship will only ever be as scary as the skills of the pilot warrant, but cool nevertheless. Although I imagine it would annoy and/or enrage the guy that's collecting one of everything in EVE if ships became that unique

No.
Killboards are bad enough.
The only thing like it that would be acceptable would be: "Creation Date: " "Killing Blows: "
And on wrecks maybe a "Date Destroyed: " "Last Known Name:" "Previous Owner:"
Nothing specific, we dont need to know how often you kill battleships using templars assigned to shuttles which have tanked doomsdays... That would not only cause alot of Epeen ammo, but alot of server stress...

I brought this up last year and was flamed to hell and back for it. I simply suggested that once a ship is assembled, you can name it once. Once it's named differently from it's default name ("Bellum Eternus' Megathron" for instance) then it can't be renamed again unless it's repackaged.
The ship history would have all kills attached to it, as well as damage dealt and received.
I agree that it would be neat to attach some history to a particular ship. Make you want to keep it alive a little longer in some cases, and make people hunt you down just to destroy it. You could even attach a bounty to a particular ship.
But again, everyone yelled at me for it. Meh.

Fun idea, though not fun enough to cripple the database over...
Also, it brought this to mind, which is always a good thing: This is my Rifter. There are many like it but this one is mine. My Rifter is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my Rifter is useless. Without my Rifter I am useless.

Edited by: Cors on 30/11/2008 03:59:39 on my broadsword one of my char's used while pirateing in lowsec this fall, I would collect the corpse of every ships I killed, and put it in the cargo hold.
Not a new idea.
I didn't think much of it.
Till my corp moved, and one of my dir's moved that HIC to another system.
Problem was, he had to take the corpse's out of the hold to put it on the carrier.
Vent went something like this.
"DUDE. WTF!!" -"Huh? What?" "What's with all the corpses in the hold. Wife not giveing you any at home? need play toys?" -"Haha(Sarcastically). No. When we were pirateing, I snagged each corpse from each pod kill. Why?" "Dude, theres like a hundred of them in here!" -"I know. Why? What's wrong?" "But.. Didn't you loose these when you were blown up?" -"Haven't lost a ship in a few months. So no.." "But dude.. seriously.. that many?" -"What can I say. When the targets had the choice of attack the HIC, or the BS's, then always attacked you guys in the BS's. Not my fault." "Damn... Do you really want me to move all these?" -"Please. I want the person who kills me to understand what that ship's been through."
so I'm all for the ship history thing. Maybe make a toggle so it can be private only. Corp only. Alliance only. Open to all to view.

When I first started playing I can remember thinking it would be cool to have the ship names show in space not the characters, this was the ships would become notorius and have the "Holy poo it's the flaming stocking, run for you life!!!!" effect.
Maybe this is something that the T3 ships should have as each ship will be a law to it's self so notoriaty and history would be more useful in working out what the helll you are facing..

I really like the idea, and to be honest, this isn't going to hit the DB all that much. The reads and writes will be pretty rare. I say go for it. CCP is obviously pretty good at optimizing their DB (side note: I wonder what they use for a DB), I have faith that they would be able to add this in pretty easily, and with minimal (read:no) impact on performance.

seriously, its a good idea, though asshats like this guy are so bitter they can't spit that sentence out in reference to another person.
If ccp wanted to, they could likely do this with as much of a db hit as all the show info's on the ships and pilots in space, i.e. minimal

I also honestly believe lag would be virtually non existent but really only CCP can comment on the db load generated by something like this.
As many have said and I totally agree, nice to have, would add lots of depth but not in exchange of extra lag.
