Just run both.
Drop the Ubuntu CD in your machine and it walks you through creating a dual boot system.
Vista for games
Ubuntu for everything else. Comes with a full office suite.

Uhm, so you mean that running an OS from a CD is giving a better OS than running things from the HDD?.
Well i would then just use the same OS that are installed to everything then. Things will go much much faster.
You can run it from the CD, but you could dual boot (install both a copy of ubuntu and vista!)

Yeah i know, that's why i edited my reply to that now.
But why have 2x OS'es when you can run games perfectly in Server 2008 and all of the other things pretty good to, instead of having one OS for gaming and then have to reboot into Ubuntu only because Ubuntu is some few % better in something than Server 2008 is?.

No need to tell me.
If someone has a bit of money, they CAN install Server 2008, VMWare and have the server function as a Virtual OS Server. You just install the VMWare OS on your PC, and you can dynamically run/load OS images off the server. This is what our forensics lab is setting up.

ugh fail. Motherboard doesn't recognize USB devices as bootable.
don't have a dvd burner either. Looks like it's back to Vista. Again.
I'm not too sure about requesting one from Microsoft either, since on those surveys they always require to know every bloody way to contact you, right down to your grandmother's phone number.

Yeh, a Beta OS is much better than a 110% stable version of Server 2008 .
Mmmmm yup, that's all true.
But i agree, when Windows 7 is released in the final version, then yes, it will be much better.
But that's like 1+ year until it will be released though.

So i'll do it later when i wake up .
Would be a shorter list to write down what to keep. Include hardware so there's actually something on the list though.

Wohooo! I seem to have server 2008 working properly thus far.
Now I'll just have to re-obtain all my various drivers/thingies and I'm good to go.
One thing is I couldn't get vLite to work properly on XP back when I was doing my preparation work. I guess I'll leave it to a future date to fiddle with.

I'm logged in as Admin, so I don't think it's a permission problem.
Does this mean directx 10 doesn't work? And I somehow have to use directx 9?
edit2: Epic fail. I think I might have downloaded the 32bit version of server 2008 when I needed the 64bit version. Would this explain why 1) eve doesn't work and 2) why my 32bit graphics drivers don't work?
First. You need to download this: DirectX End-User Runtimes (November 2008).
You need that even when Server 2008 have DirectX 10 support.
Second. Do you ISO file say: 6001.18000.080118-1840_amd64fre_Server_en-us-KRMSXFRE_EN_DVD.iso or 6001.18000.080118-1840_x86fre_Server_en-us-KRMSFRE_EN_DVD.iso?.
Or does your ISO file take 2.49 GB or 1.75 GB?.

Gaaa!
I had the same thing with vLite v1.2.
So the thing you have to do is to open this RAR file and put the files in the RAR file into the main vLite folder where you have installed it: http://privat.bluezone.no/tomhelge/Into vLite Folder.rar.
Then you only have to press the Install thing on that thing whne you start vLite.
I hope it works for you.

I respect that you might take that as dubious methods .
But there is NOTHING in the Microsoft EULA that says your not allowed to disable one service and take ovnership over 3 files and delete them.
The 3 files are in the 'C:\Windows\System32' folder, and the files are there after you have installed the OS.
There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING that is or will be cracked with that method anyways.
If this had been something that had been a no no, Microsoft would fix it long time ago.
Windows Server 2008 have been out since Feb 2008 so.
Anyways, i have edited my earlier post, so the link to the method is removed. So i'll hope your happy now .

Edited by: Irulan S''Dijana on 01/12/2008 23:22:03 I've got the 1.75gb version. I.e. not the one you wrote.
edit: And for the record, I have an Intel e6600 I'll try the vLite thingy next. Assuming I've got the right OS version.
But first of all, time to get EVE working. Think I lost around 12 hours already.

Ok then you have the 32-bit version.
Well all i did to get every game to work after i had installed Server 2008 was to do this:
1: Install the Chipset drivers. 2: Install the newest DirectX. 3: Install the newest graphic driver. 4: Fix the Missing gameux.dll thing.
After that, everything is ready to be played .

Thanks for help so far btw...
Anyway, now having problems with my graphics driver. Actually I had it last night before I went to sleep too.
After I install the 32-bit version and restart, my screen is black and goes on standby mode. Basically because it doesn't recieve a signal.
Any ideas?
Oh, quick question. Given I have an E6600 cpu, am I supposed to use the 32-bit version?

Well yeah, even if your CPU can use 64-bit things, it can still use 32-bit OS'es and programs.
And about the black screen after startup. You sure you have the right driver installed?.

I'm pretty sure it's right.
I used the nVidia online tool thingy to automatically show what driver I should use. I checked manually and it does list my particular graphics card under the "supported" section.
It's also the 32-bit version.
Oh, and EVE still doesn't work. I simply get the splash screen and then it goes non-responsive. I don't even get to see the client, all it shows is a tab on the bottom toolbar. I'm pretty sure this is a generic EVE problem though, so I'll look around later and fiddle some more. At least I don't get any more directX problems.

The thing with the splash screen and then it goes non-responsive is something i have had on Sisi earlier. I can't remember what i did to fix it, but it was just a little thing, so it wasn't any hard to fix.
But the thing is to remember what i did to fix it, grrrr. Might have to use my brain now lol.
I even remember i tried to reinstall the EVE client and then re-copy over EVE to the Sisi folder and then patch everything up, and it still didn't worked. I also tried to move the Sisi folder to another location on my Game HDD without working.
But when i moved the folder to another HDD, then it worked. So it's what i did to get it to work i have to think about to find out.

Edited by: Irulan S''Dijana on 02/12/2008 01:48:38 I think I've worked out the graphics issue.
My screen is supposed to be PnP, but server 2008 doesn't seem to think so. Hence under device managers it's running as a "generic non PnP moniter". And the CD my screen came with has no drivers, just an annoying little manual which tells me because it's PnP, it doesn't need drivers.
Great.
edit: yes, and I did manage to get past the black screen at login, but only by running it at 800x640, then changing it after login to 1024x768 which is the max allowable. Grr.

Yeah, I've heard the same but never been able to pin down any facts and figures.
I tend to run high end games a lot (crysis, eve premium, half-life 2, farcry 2, bioshock to name a few) but the machine i have is a self built overclocked quad core, quad SLI rig with 8GB of overclocked DDR3, so I'm wondering if it's really going to make much of a difference tbh.

Do not.. I repeat do not! try and use any linux platform to run eve or any other "high end" games.
I have been using ubuntu for about 5 years and have tried every documented method to get eve and cough cough wow running well. I got them running but never ever close to XP frame rates. Patching is a nightmare and it just sucks don't go there. Especially if you don't have a lot of linux knowledge.

Edited by: Liranan on 05/12/2008 04:03:33 I am downloading Server 2008 as I type this but I won't be able to run it as Kaspersky won't install and I don't want to buy a corporate license. I will probably run it in a virtual environment first to test it out, if I can find a way round the Kaspersky problem I might run it.
