My Tristan & Merlin have a split weapon systems, and I will take that over your Rifter any day.

Neither ship really has any true issue.
Maybe a third on the merlin only because there is no good caldari gun frig. But the Gallente have one already. Well, thats my 2 cents anyway.

I would personally love to see T1 frigs more viable.
This would also possibly encourage more people to try out a bit of pvp without risking losing a big chunk of isk.
I know alot of people say "but you can just fly a T1 cruiser", and while that's true, there's still a HUGE price difference between a T1 frig with T2 mods and a T1 cruiser with T2 mods, 4-5 mill. is a lot when you just want some casual pvp.
People love being cost-effective, and for good reason, so i don't see why T1 frigs can't be made a bit better, even though there are already some good ones out there.
I also find peoples tendency to go "well, atleast there's 2 good frigs out of all of them, that's gotta be enough!"
But WHY? why should you have to settle with a few good ships when they could all be good and balanced, awesome at their intended role and fun to fly without feeling like a flying bullseye because your ship is subpar to the rest?

The rifter also has split weapons. The difference is that instead of being forced into using a pre-determined mix of weapons in its high slots it has the option of a second variation. The tristan and the merlin do not.
Such a change wouldn't imbalance either of the ships and would actually at the very least get them a chance to be used by more pilots.
Plus with 3 gun slots for blasters I could fly a "berlin." 
That sounds much better than flying an "arfter" (artillery rifter) or an auto-ter (take a guess) would.
