Slashdot READ thoe comments people!

(i have had my little brother tell me the same thing)
".. in the UK is that young people now care more about who is going to win X-Factor and Britain's Got Talent than own performance at school.

"The universities cant let their standards slip...
Oh yes, they can, oh yes! Being a postgraduate student at one UK university and seeing how the exams are graded and later how the results are scaled and how low the level of difficulty of exam questions has become...
Oh yes, they can lower the standards!" - Hello japan

i just saw this
Quote: As for China - if you think you can move all your manufacturing out there and the locals won't one day say to themselves "Hang on a minute. We own all the factories, we know exactly how to build the kind of things that they buy in the West - why don't we design them ourselves and keep all the money?" you're living on another planet.
months ago i saw a documentary about a mobile Chinese company (owned by Chinese state) that give 5% of their profit to R&D that are allot of money

"First, let's get one thing straight.
This is not an argument anyone in a position of power can possibly win. More students fail? Your teaching standards are falling, your education system is lousy. More students pass? Your exams are too easy.
So instead, let's look at what organisations which aren't obliged to follow the state-designed education system think.
Several universities are introducing entrance exams, whereas previously this was more-or-less exclusive to Oxford and Cambridge.
Several universities are having to introduce more basic maths into their first year syllabus to get students up to speed.
Private schools are seriously considering dropping the state-set exams (GCSEs and A-levels) in favour of something else such as the International Baccalaureate. I myself have looked at papers which were set only 5 or 6 years after I left school and exams which I should by rights have been completely lost on - I could immediately see how to answer at least half the questions.
On the other hand, a lot of countries in north Africa and the Middle East consider that education is the only way they're going to improve their lot in the long term. Tunisia, for example, spends a third of its money on education and children leave school speaking at least three languages reasonably fluently. Many of the Arab emirates are doing something similar - they know the oil's not going to be there forever, and they want to be prepared for the day the wells dry up. No chance they can do that if most of their population can hardly read.
As for China - if you think you can move all your manufacturing out there and the locals won't one day say to themselves "Hang on a minute. We own all the factories, we know exactly how to build the kind of things that they buy in the West - why don't we design them ourselves and keep all the money?" you're living on another planet.
20 years from now, the West isn't going to be the technical research place it is today."
... i am a genius ...

The avergae IQ in the UK is about the same as a clever dog.
But thats all good reduced competition in the workplace means I get a job offer for every interview I attend even in these hard times. Although living in a country of morons gets a bit stressful sometimes. Most people can't complete a simple task correctly.
I'm in IT and earn a decent amount of money but people don't realise how much. I'm glad women are turned off when I tell them what I do becaue they have no idea whats important. I refuse to go anywhere near British women they're a complete nightmare anyway.
Ignorance and arrogance are the prevailing personality traits in the UK a the moment. I can't wait until the recession bites hard, some people are in for a shock. The good times allowed the genetically challenged to prosper. Time for the theory of evolution to kick in.

In my geography class 3 years ago I asked the question "if China makes all our things and owns all the minerals, what do we actualy do?".
His answer is quite haunting, our generation will be paying for the luxuries of the last plus taxes to the point we become the third world by advancing so much slower or we have to fight a war against them to cancel the debt.
He was probably exaggerating but to me that was quite disturbing. Thing is, he realised it and so did I and a few others, thats the course that will happen unless things are changed. Look at a few weeks ago, capitalism came within 2 days of falling into something worse than a depression, perhaps a collapse akin to the USSR (we know how fast that happened ) but that was avoided because people noticed and addressed it.
Things can be fixed, Britain, France, Germany, all of these will be cultural notes like Scotland, England and Wales exist only as a cultural relic. The EU is where we are going, we need to get that online efficiently and start building our factories inside our own bloody trade block. Haruhiists - Overloading Out of Pod discussions since 2007. I am actually not your average goon, i am thin, i work in engineering i have dumb bells i work out occasionally, i own my own E book library (getting close to 1000 books!) i enjoy reading and have nearly a shelf full of technical books, from Spaceship engineering system, payloads and development (basically satellites and rocketry - heavy maths based) a large amount of books on electronics and physics, i also do robotics and programming in my spare time for fun. -------------------------------------------

Whilse i agree that 99% of the typical Englishman whom only experiences "The Outside (Of england) world" is BCC news or goes to the pub every damn day, uses up all their sick days before they've been hired or reffers to the island that is Wales, Scotland And England as just England are Ignorant fools who need to be either A. Re-educated & castrated or B. Taken into some remote area and well...you get the idea.
You need to remember, when England are essentially decendants of who they are, you cant expect more than a "Borrow your way out of debt" or "Keep shooting till we're the world leaders" approach to life and politics.
Meanwhile, that 1% of the population (which is quite alot of people) who arne't Morons, Illegal Immigrants, or drunken fools are awesome people, and i have had the pleasure of meeting a couple of gems in my time in Eve who are from England.

I just want to point out that England & Wales have a different education system to Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Given that no one had written an Advanced Higher textbook for Physics I am resorting to using an A Level one I bought.
Can't comment as to how different the two are yet but there's been moments I noticed the mathematical proofs were geared more towards an assumed GCSE level. Calculus is barely used and all formula are already arranged into each subject....
If there's anyone also doing what I am doing (I seriously doubt it, the number of people taking the Advanced Higher course doesn't even merit writing a textbook for it) then I would appreciate your input on this. Well in my opinion any country that does not spend a significant amount of money on education, and I mean at all levels and in all places not just the elite areas, is bound to fail or will never truly advance.

The education is severely ****ed up.
Dumb people shouldn't get kicked out of school for being dumb, neither should they be allowed to get through the whole education on "under-learning" courses. It defeats the point of having support courses.
Now Troublemakers, they should get kicked out and/or have to pay for the ability to re enter the education system. ______________________________________________

It's all part of the plan my friends, why beat a populace in to subordination, when you can just dumb them down every year, until they get to a point where a) they won't complain, b) not enough people will complain to energise the rest.
As for this "celebrity/fame" culture, it's horrendous. It's essentially Orwell's prole media to keep them happy. |

Edited by: Asestorian on 30/11/2008 16:50:06 The problem is that the state education system has been slipping further and further behind the private education system, instead of getting closer to it. You need to already have money in the family in order to get a decent education, and most can't afford that, get a poor education and then end up with jobs that can't pay for private education for their children because they didn't get private education. It's really not that good.
Then there is the problem that, for some reason, a culture has appeared where it's cool to be stupid. This, more than anything, needs to be countered. If people are raised with the mindset that education, intelligence and furthering of all your abilities are good things, then we'll already be on the right track. As it is the government ignores it and point to numbers that mean nothing and go "see, we did stuff!"
It really doesn't make any sense. The Labour government have been going on about how they've been pumping money into all kinds of places, and the results ended up worse than they were before. I'm too young to really know how things were before Labour came to power, but my understanding is that some things were changed that had no reason to be changed.

There are some good public high schools. The one I went too was deemed good enough by Alastair Darling to send his kids to and buy a house in the area to get them into it
That said it is only later on I realized mine was the exception and not the rule. Pity the thing was literally falling apart in places, it was built in the 60s ti last a few decades.... and now they have stretched that to close to half a century.... the area needs around ú80M to get Edinburghs High Schools up to the national standard guidelines

I'm British. I was born in Sheffield and then moved to Caerfyrddin and I love my country.. but it is broken. It is not just the education systems we have, there is something else wrong, we are raising idiot children who don't WANT to learn. If they aren't willing to learn then all the tutoring in the world won't pay off in the end. We are raising "junk" generations, simple human cattle who question nothing yet at the same time rebel against all visible aspects of authority. What can be done to solve this? Who knows, how can you save someone who doesn't want to be saved? All these idiots are piling up, breeding and sinking our country.
However, If you think that what I just said isn't also true of OTHER countries then you're sadly mistaken and probably just looking for something to rebel against yourself. It's the global media that is dumbing us down, every country is starting to see a rise in these useless people and nobody has a solution for it, you CANNOT teach those who do not wish to learn, who believe that the world owes them, who believe that compensation is a right they should exercise at every opportunity.
It depresses me to see our country going this way and it depresses me further to see that it's not JUST our country. We cannot be free of these idiots now, it's too late, idiocy begets idiocy I'm afraid so we must find a harsh solution to this problem or none at all.
