My dear Broc,
The above is a quote from the customer support page of this website. It is not my personal opinion of this matter, it is the offical stance of CCP.
Thanks. -

Why do you refer to this phenomenon as "ore stealing" ? There is no stealing involved. They are merely salvaging garbage from floating cans that contains discarded ore.

lol, ok. I hope the Dev team comes around to see your divine logic one day.
Until then, its the offical stance that counts, not the twisted "logical" opinion of some random person. -

Hah It's Bulls*** to say that jet cans where not meant for mining.
The regular containers were designed to jettison unwanted items into space or to hold loot from blown up ships. They were designed so that any player could take from them because that was essential for them to function as they were intended. Players later invented the "container mining" method after noticing that the containers could hold way more than any cargo hold. This use for the containers was never intended and it has the obvious flaw that any player with a reduced sense of right and wrong can come by and take everything from the container and no one can do anything about it.

ha ha ha. according to "the official rules" you have a reduced sense of right and wrong...

Any smart ore thief works in 0.5/0.6 or 0.7 simply because far better ores are there.
People always whine that miners shouldnt be allowed to mine in Empire and theyre alsonot allowed to come out in 0.0and suck on alliance claimed Bistot roids.
Where do you suggest they go?
Edit: You shoot people who are in the same corp as you. Want to kill an ore thief? Join their n00b corp! I think ill go train an alt with basic frigate/missile skills, should only take a week ---------------------------

What I think is funny is I offer the ore relocators to help themselves to some of my ore I mean I can't do anything about it regardless of whether it is right or wrong, mind you I've never yet ever seen one in a .4 even though I Jet Can mine there as well. I usually just ask them not to pop my can's as that can be a hassle. I also never mine to a Jet Can without an Indy in the neighborhood doing my hauling so they are not likely to get much. Funny thing though even when I have offered to allow the ore liberators to help clean up my ore they just usually leave. Wonder why? Most recent excuse? "You weren't leaving enough in the can for me to fill up my probe" Gee you mean if you have to wait for a few minutes for it to appear so you can pull it out it's not worth it?

Ok, its a very old argument Vice, but you got to admit its still pretty lame to do something like that, game or no game. Yes people should be using secure cans, but NO people should always be operating within 'Action, Reaction' - Bring on Shiva...

Ahh, but at least they are willing to take some risk; that miner in a .4 might just have some bite back

Enough about ore thieves already. They are harmless. Like the little fuzzy things on that one star trek episode.
What's so ironic is that people who mine in secure space make them reproduce.
Our small corp moved into .4 space about week 3 of the game and has been there since. Well now it's .3 space but whatever. We were there with our frigates (probes and bantams) and me in a badger II.
It just happens to be on a shortest route to Obe which has been one of the premiere pirate points since day one of the game.
Viceroy is actually right. You have three distinct options against ore thieves:
1) mine to a secure can. (didn't exist btw when I used to mine)
2) Move to .4 or below.
3) Deal with the losses.
