In the almost 5 months I have been playing I have seen countless threads on ore thieving. The problem with these threads is that every ore thief around comes out trying to justify what they do and how this is your fault for littering and how they are just great people who keep the spaceways clean and you should thank them.
Yes, they know it's a lie. They know they are thieves, and that what they do is morally wrong. They do it because they don't have the balls to even gank you in your indy at a gate somewhere. They do it because they are cowards.
If they weren't cowards they would join a real corp so they could be given a war dec. If they weren't cowards they would go into .4 and below. If they weren't cowards they would be intellectually honest about what it is they do.
Case in point Tenaj has a channel for these type of people called tookurstuff. The very name on the channel indicates that she, and everyone else in it knows that it doesn't belong to them and that they are thieves.
You know what though? Having said all this, I'm ok with ore thieves, and corp thieves, and every other griefer you want to put in the game. What I am not ok with is allowing some of them to opperate with NO consequences, and NO risk. If they want to steal I'm ok with it, but there should be a way to retaliate.
What we need is a different type of war dec imo. How about introducing "Personal Vendetta".
A few rules though, the person in question MUST have been in existance for at least 1 month, and must be a member of an npc corp.
I know this is much longer than the needed time to train a hauler enough to be an ore thief, but if it's too short of a time then it's just another griefing tool.
Even the above would set up a few griefing scenarios, but if you put a 3-24 hours to initiate on these things then it won't help you right when you get ripped off, but I'm betting that enough people have grudges that there would be so many people ready to pop people like vogon, tenaj, zeepo, and the like that they would find it hard going very shortly.
Sure they would make alts to do it again, and those would end up on lists as well.
It isn't perfect, but it would give us some way to combat these people who currently have ALL REWARD and NO RISK, and lets be honest, there are lots of people out there who have actual vendetas against these people, but no way to exercise them. With the recent missile changes it's tough to even use suicide alts to protect yourself, you can't get off enough damage fast enough to protect yourself.
So come on TomB, you like pretty explosions, help us make a few more. This time with a difference. This time the people getting blown up will actually deserve it.

Whilst I find myself agreeing with your argument i must point out that it will never happen.
Criminal tagging is coming with Shiva that will make ore thieves valid targets for retribution. Just wait for that and see if there are as many complaints about it when players can fight back. -

Edited by: Adriana on 13/07/2004 11:45:23 I would not count on criminal flagging to work on ore thieves. Otherwise you have a scenario where any rat can go into a 1.0 belt and start ejecting cans with a mod or two in them, the minute a noob opens it, and amazed at their good fortune takes the item inside they will be griefed back to the stone age.
Perhaps the devs have a way around such grief tactics, I hope they do, and I hope criminal flagging will address the problem, but unless they have some method for preventing the above mentioned scenario, it will cause far more problems than it solves.
*edit* and please keep the use secure cans rubbish out of my thread. Secure cans aren't usable in above .7 space, and even if they were they are too small to make it worth using. That arguement is crap and everyone knows it.

Who are they taking the ore off of? Mainly battleship miners in 1.0/0.9, who take ore that newbies could be mining, have no chance of being shot by NPC's and complain when they find out that they're unsecure containers arent so secure. Ore thieves do thieve but so do these miners, macro mining with no risk in 0.9 is more of a crime, even without the macros :). Mimiru > It'd be a tie, the monkies nerfed pooflinger wouldnt have enough tracking to hit the parrot orbiting him, but the parrot's beak is so small it couldnt break the monkey's fur tanking. |

Edited by: Adriana on 13/07/2004 11:53:00 Macro mining is irrelevant for this discussion. First of all it is a bannable offense and is subject to GM intervention. Secondly, if you are an ore thief and happen to run into a full blown macro mining opp you have just hit the jackpot.
Roid respawns in 1.0 have more than kept up with mining atm from what I have seen, and as long as there is ore for the newbies to mine I don't see the problem with mining in 1.0 space in any ship you happen to be able to fly.
Sure it is a bit rude (I don't do it myself, I mainly stick to .6 and below) but as long as they don't strip mine it all and leave nothing I don't see how it even remotely approaches the level of ore theft. At least these people (NOT macroers I mean) at least work for it. They spend their time and effort to mine it after all.

I mine myself a lot in low sec space and I feel really lonely in this space, coz all ppl mine in 0.5-1.0. If more ppl would mine there, the noxium price would drop to old value. I think the cowards in first place are the miners and NOT the ore thieves.
Generell i love to mine with jettison cans in the hope for some action, but i never was robbed.

Ok how about this;
The original concept of mining was to mine into your CARGO HOLD and docking to empty it.
Jetcan mining wasnt intended, its a player invention.
You're saying ore theives get all reward for no risk.
Its the same with jetcan mining, you get a huge cargo container, aka lots of reward, for no risk (If ore theives didnt exist that is).
Your entire case is a contradiction. You want mining in secure space to be easier for yourself so you can mine the crap out of those 1.0 system intended for newbies; newbies who SURPRISINGLY mine to their cargo holds like it was intended.
Move into 0.7- and use secure cans. Jetcans werent intended for mining, they create means to gain more profit that was intended by the original "cargo mining" idea. Their downside is that they can be opened by anyone, and thanks to our good ore thief community you people cant ripp off 1.0 systems in apocs with 8 miner2s and get away with.
Your entire "personal vendetta" fantasy is just a crappy idea made up in your self-interest that will never be implemented.
Contraband flagging will be in soon, i dont see what you're whining about.
Go ore thieves go. Teach the greedy lazy stripmining monkeys to use secure cans. -

First of all read my above reply, I DO mine below .7. Not only that, reguardless of their intention they have created a situation where it CAN be done, and left it in the game.
If they don't want it done, then remove the ability to do it. Make the cans a lot smaller (the size of your cargo hold for instance)
And second, reguardless of what you think, if someone is mining then they are putting their time into something, they are working for what they earn. Ore thieves don't. They just show up and steal.
The thing is, I don't have a problem with that, I have a problem with no recourse with them. They can grief a miner, but the miner can't retaliate.
I also stated an obvious reason why I do not believe that ore theft will result in a criminal flag. Hopefully I am wrong, and CCP has a way around it being used as a tool to grief newbies.

Mining with jetcan = High profit Risk of getting robbed = High Risk
Mining with secure can = Less Profit No risk of getting robbed = Less (none actually) risk
Thats the way the cookie crumbles. Sorry. -

I can not see the problem:
My megathron mines in 20 minutes 1 load for an indi, so if someone steals me this i lose 20 minutes eve-time.
Last night i was waiting 6 hours outside a station to camp 1 terrorist of the CELES corp. 6 hours no income. 0 isk. Only one showed up , docked and logged.
Compare between all 20 minutes making 1 mil isk to 6 hours no money = ccp must not do something against ore thieves. simple math for me. oK ?

well ore thifs are a pain when you 1st start.
I tell you what happened to me 1st week got an frig and hauler, so i stated to can mine ore theif came and stoll my can.
Its real nice to steal from a noob not in any player corp. makes it hard to make money, (theif was in an intron V so it wasnt a noob stealing from a noob) So i say that is lame!!!!
So i get mad and log off come back on later because i want to get the cash for a cruser and the skills needed to fly one (ie cruser skill 500000 isk ans ship 2-6 mill lot of ore with frig and time) Any way to the point i find a nice belt with good patch of scord start mining and 5 or 6 BS and 2 haulers jump in and stip mine the belt they go from belt to belt. thats lame with a group like that you should be in space lower than .9 i would say .5 or below
after i got my thorax I mined in .8 to .4 depending on the ore i needed for items or what was selling good. soon to have a bs finnaly mined all the ore needed to build it.
so all in all if thiefs go after bs groups strip mining i dont have a problem with that.
but they dont they seem to pick on the noobs that dont know about ramming to keep ore thiefs from getting to can easy and keeping them from jumping out easy.
As for corps strip mining .9 and up well you are just as bad as ore thifes go to lower space the rats in .5 .6 .7 you can take out easy with drones its just plain lame to do that.
to ore thiefs and strip mining opts why not leave .9 and up alone so noobs have a chance. (ie: I almost said to hell with this game due to thing like that going on in .9 and 1.0 space )

Join a corp......if you want to go solo fine, do it after you've joined a corp.....the corp will get you in a cruiser fast then you can pay them back and leave As a new player you cant expect to be totally safe from the rest of Eve.......

same arguement again Miners= Dont worry, if crimal flaggen works work (Im doubtn that for the first week though) you an dem ore thieves can fight ova rocks till the Eve gate stablizes an the Earthers invade Ore Theives= while what ya do is legal game wise, dont try fo the "We've noble in that we give risk to something that has no risk" your scum, admitt it, dere aint no shame in in, but ya is scum, and what you do currently *gasp* aint got no risk. So Miners, cut ya rocks, Ore thieves, steal dem rocks, and both of ya, just wait for crim flaggin cause i wanna see if the theives make a combat indy

If this world was supposed to be friendly CCP wouldnt have wasted time paying the devs to code so many weapons |

Viceroy is right if you wanna mine into a can with ne fear of Ore Theif, get a secure can or several secure cans. Arrange a hauler and pay him well. Don't be so greedy!!!!

Sorry.
Risk of getting robbed is actually kind of low, there arent that many ore thiefs around i dont think. Mimiru > It'd be a tie, the monkies nerfed pooflinger wouldnt have enough tracking to hit the parrot orbiting him, but the parrot's beak is so small it couldnt break the monkey's fur tanking. |

Teach the greedy lazy stripmining monkeys to use secure cans.
there are plenty of game mechanics that aren't used as they are intended. such as, oh say ganking in empire. or maybe the infamous yulai blockade. escrow is screwed up with false entries. alts. cruise kestrels. this forum. not to even mention the actual exploits of the game that screw everything up.
so, Viceroy, why do you only target "lazy miners" ??
no, seriously... why?

ganking in empire was removed. the yulai blockade was a blast, but its offically "not allowed", its easy to use your BRAIN to see the false entries in escrow.
cruise kestrels dotn exist anymore. surprise.
anything thats an exploit can be tracked down and punished.
jetcan mining isnt an exploit, its just a player invention. Like instajump bookmarks. Its more efficent than the "original" method of mining, but it has to have a drawback, thus ore liberation exists.
Quote: so, Viceroy, why do you only target "lazy miners" ??

where did i say that i only target lazy miners?
is that some kind of pathetic attempt to insult me or something?

Um. Thats not going to be easy. Agree with him or not Viceroy is damn good at PvP from all acounts I've heard, and his corp is acknowledged as elite, even among other pirates.
Podding him once would be hard enough I think, podding him back to the stone age would be next to impossible.
Besides, of all the pirates I'd like to see gone, Viceroy isn't at the top of my list, whatever else he has going on, he is at least funny sometimes. Most pirates lack that sense of humor.
Come to think of it, most players do too.

Come to think of it, most players do too.

yes taking someone else ore from a can is thieving, but isn't that a way to make money like everyone else ?
do YOU own the roids you mine ? Or are those roids intended for you to mine them with an 8 miner II apoc ? so you are a thief too.
there's no morale in eve

Thanks for plugging my channel Adrianna.
Personally I've never tried to pretend that I'm doing anything other than stealing. I openly admit to being a thief. I DO think though that jet can mining is damn nearly an exploit and that thieves add balance and risk to it.
I do go into 0.4. I was there last night, and engaged another player. (unfortunately a tad too near to the sentry guns )
I think Viceroy generally sums it up very well, he talks a lot of sense. But Adrianna dear, you have been a whiner since I first came across you. I recall one of your first posts being about thieves stealing your ore and how you should be left alone in 1.0 to stripmine it. Your next post was about the rats in 0.4 being too tough though!!
Honestly, have you ever thought that EVE may not be the right game for you? I have you down more as a ''Britney's dance party'' on the PS2 type myself

I think it'll be a damn shame if they abolish theft altogether with their criminal flagging system. I'm with you, theves add a nice balance to jet can mining. The only balance it might need is a small increase in size of secure cans and a small decrease for jet cans.
It'll be a damn shame if there's no longer any risk for the 1.0 smacktalking jet can uber strip miners.

Stealing ore is fine in my opinion. The only trouble is it generally happens to n00bs who rush back to station to get their civilian gattler, then rush back to take on the thief. Well, Concorde sorts out the mess. Its pretty much risk free for the thief (apart from reputation). We do need a criminal flagging system, but how to make this unexploitable is a complete mystery to me.

It'd be a shame if they criminally flag jet can thieves for a few reasons:
1. It'll give the green light to BS strip miners in 1.0 and before we know it those systems will be empty again. Noobs will be driven into lower sec systems where they'll have problems dealing with NPC rats.
2. What about all the poor sods who bought giant secure cans and do their mining the hard way? Those things aren't cheap and would become virtually worthless overnight
3. What about the players who produce secure cans and spent good money on the BP's?
4. What about ME? I go to a lot of trouble to find your cans you know, I should expect some sort of reward when I get there
CCP has a perfectly good mechanism in secure cans for beating thieves. It'd be really dumb to just cave in to the whiners and give them a virtually limitless 'secure' jet can. Regardless of the rights and wrongs of stealing, we ALL know that CCP never intended jet cans to be used this way.

I completly agree, if you dont want it stolen, keep it in your cargo hold!!!! I think that I may have to try my hand at this ore thieveing bit, sounds like fun.

Oh come on its A GAME!!!! the good thing about eve is that it allows people to be naughty or nice. I know lets take away everything ingame that has the potential to **** us off. So, npc's? out! pvp? out! missions? out!
things happening that can **** us off is part of the game (at least if its in the spirit of the game's conception), and pirating and thievery and ganking and scamming are all to be expected in a sim that is supposed to be immersive.
If people dont like this then they can go play solitaire.

Personally, I think the best remedy would be to decrease the size of the jet can below that of the smallest secure can. It would make the choice very easy for everyone.
If that was done, only the new players would use a jet can until they could afford the skill and secure cans. ________________________________________________ From deep in space where nobody hears my screams... Sometimes in fear, sometimes in anger, mostly just my singing style. |

Deployable cans are a joke, always have and always will be.
Ore thieves are pretty lame players I've been robbed in .5 space while mining in my probe. it's pretty sad when you just have to watch them rip you off :)

The regular containers were designed to jettison unwanted items into space or to hold loot from blown up ships. They were designed so that any player could take from them because that was essential for them to function as they were intended. Players later invented the "container mining" method after noticing that the containers could hold way more than any cargo hold. This use for the containers was never intended and it has the obvious flaw that any player with a reduced sense of right and wrong can come by and take everything from the container and no one can do anything about it.

Quote: Players who are thinking of taking up a career as ore thiefs should note that they will face a lifetime of unpopularity and unhappiness as a result.
That's from the same FAQ. Adriana's original point is that now, the ability of peeved miners to make an ore thief's life miserable is lacking. Really the best a miner can do at this point is keep bumping the indy so the thief can't get into warp.
As it currently stands, if the thief is in an NPC corp the miner is SOL. Adriana's idea is good at heart but what happens when a miner declares "vendetta" against an ore thief and then the ore thief shows up in a BS in Empire and blows the miner to pieces. That sounds kind of fun to me, I can only imagine what the sociopath ore-stealers would do with that.
The simple solution is that a can can only be opened by the miner and his/her gang members for its first 3-4 minutes. This way the miners can't be as "lazy" and if a miner were to fill up more than one can they would be vulnerable to theft.
The bottom line is an ore thief should never cost you more than an hour of your time, which is certainly a pain in the butt, but not worth changing the game dynamics.
And for all you "liberators" out there, the only thing you are taking is the time that some other player invested in the game. Maybe they are stripping fields with a corp, maybe they are mining mins for their first BS, either way you are negating that miner's efforts for your personal gain. It is as boring as hell to sit in a belt hour after hour mining those minerals that everyone in the game needs, and ore thieves spit on that effort while assuming absolutely NO risk.

Incorrect. What they can do is mine in 0.6 and lower with secure cans, that will **** ore thieves off when they see a group mining and travel 5 jumps to get there and then finds out he cant nick it. Mimiru > It'd be a tie, the monkies nerfed pooflinger wouldnt have enough tracking to hit the parrot orbiting him, but the parrot's beak is so small it couldnt break the monkey's fur tanking. |

Attention all miners, jet cans will most likely not be included in Shivas criminal flagging system because they are supposed to be unwanted trash.
Too bad!

You know why you cant put A low slot mod in a high slot......because thats the way its programed ccp could easily change the code so that ore could not go into jetty cans or limit the amought a jetty can could contain, nothing hard in that....people have been able to mine into jetty cans because thats the way CCP wanted it......it would have been very easy to change this had they desired too.
The fact is, if people couldnt mine into jetty cans the Eve economy wouldn't be half what it is today thats why it wasnt changed.....it gave the game balance.....
If they had increased the cargo hold of ships more then you either not see haulers much or they would have even larger cargo holds....in which case there'd be fewer of them , fewer for pirates like you to gate gank.........now we wouldnt want that would we?

Why do you refer to this phenomenon as "ore stealing" ? There is no stealing involved. They are merely salvaging garbage from floating cans that contains discarded ore.

What I think is funny is I offer the ore relocators to help themselves to some of my ore I mean I can't do anything about it regardless of whether it is right or wrong, mind you I've never yet ever seen one in a .4 even though I Jet Can mine there as well. I usually just ask them not to pop my can's as that can be a hassle. I also never mine to a Jet Can without an Indy in the neighborhood doing my hauling so they are not likely to get much. Funny thing though even when I have offered to allow the ore liberators to help clean up my ore they just usually leave. Wonder why? Most recent excuse? "You weren't leaving enough in the can for me to fill up my probe" Gee you mean if you have to wait for a few minutes for it to appear so you can pull it out it's not worth it?

Enough about ore thieves already. They are harmless. Like the little fuzzy things on that one star trek episode.
What's so ironic is that people who mine in secure space make them reproduce.
Our small corp moved into .4 space about week 3 of the game and has been there since. Well now it's .3 space but whatever. We were there with our frigates (probes and bantams) and me in a badger II.
It just happens to be on a shortest route to Obe which has been one of the premiere pirate points since day one of the game.
Viceroy is actually right. You have three distinct options against ore thieves:
1) mine to a secure can. (didn't exist btw when I used to mine)
2) Move to .4 or below.
3) Deal with the losses.
